2. The "Shadow of Things to Come" vs. The Reality​

The pioneers heavily emphasized that these annual ceremonial sabbaths were entirely distinct from the weekly seventh-day Sabbath of the Moral Law.

Paul describes these ceremonial festivals as mere "shadows":

• Colossians 2:16-17 (KJV): "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ."

Ellen White notes that these ceremonial "sabbath days" and feasts were shadows pointing forward to Christ. When the "body" (the reality, which is Christ) came, the shadows were no longer necessary. Christians are not obligated to observe Jewish feast days, perform animal sacrifices, or keep the ceremonial yearly sabbaths.

3. The "Schoolmaster" Added Because of Transgression​

In the book of Galatians, Paul deals heavily with the Judaizers—early Christians who were trying to force Gentile converts to keep the ceremonial law (specifically circumcision).

• Galatians 3:19 (KJV): "Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made..."
• Galatians 3:24-25 (KJV): "Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster."

Paul says Christians are no longer under the law of ordinances, he is freeing the church from the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament (sacrifices, circumcision, Levitical feasts, and rituals). I pray multiple times daily ( 1 John 2:16 ) for the Holy Spirit's guidance, direction, and God's forgiveness. I'm trying to live up to the Light that God has given me, to proclaim Jesus and His Righteousness to this evil, dark world.

I pray daily to overcome my sin and self-righteousness, to be a good representative of the character of Jesus and HIS Righteousness, and though I' don't get it perfect, .. The term "idolising the Sabbath" is a straw man. The Sabbath is not an idol; it is a memorial of creation:

"And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it." (Genesis 2:2-3, KJV)

And a sign of sanctification:

"Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them." (Ezekiel 20:12, KJV)

By the argument's own logic, since the fruit of the Spirit also omits "not killing," "not stealing," and "not committing adultery," shall we conclude those are void too? The apostle himself rejected this:

"Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law." (Romans 3:31, KJV)

In Christ, Paul died — his old life of self-righteous works was crucified:

He died to the law's condemning power, not its moral authority. A pardoned criminal is "dead" to the penalty, but the law against his crime still stands.
Paul also says that the ceremonial law was abolished:

This refers to the handwritten ordinances of Moses — not the Decalogue written by God's finger.

Two verses later Paul asks: "What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid" (Romans 7:7, KJV). He then uses the tenth commandment as the very definition of sin:

Far from abolishing the Decalogue, he appeals directly to it.
The "oldness of the letter" refers to external, Spirit-less obedience — obeying mechanically or to earn righteousness. The "newness of the Spirit" is not the absence of law but its internalization:

"For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts." (Hebrews 8:10, KJV)

Romans 8:4 confirms the goal:

"That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:4, KJV)

The Spirit doesn't abolish the law — He fulfills it in the believer. If the law were abolished, there would be nothing to fulfill.

4. Galatians 3:1-12 — "Works of the Law" vs. Obedience of Faith​

There is a world of difference between "I keep the Sabbath to earn salvation" (condemned) and "I keep the Sabbath because I love God and He commanded it" (commended). Scripture plainly links faith and obedience as inseparable:

"But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?" (James 2:20, KJV)

"Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone." (James 2:17, KJV)

"Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only." (James 2:24, KJV)

In Hebrews 11 — the great faith chapter — every example of faith is accompanied by obedience: Abel offered, Noah built, Abraham went out, Moses kept the Passover. Faith and obedience are never set in opposition.
Christ Himself said:

"If ye love me, keep my commandments." (John 14:15, KJV)

"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me." (John 14:21, KJV)

5. The Sabbath in Particular​

The Sabbath was instituted before sin (Genesis 2:1-3) — making it part of God's original creation order, not part of the ceremonial system dealing with sin.
It was included in the moral Decalogue, written by God's finger:

"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy." (Exodus 20:8, KJV)

It was observed by Christ:

"And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read." (Luke 4:16, KJV)

It was observed by the apostles:

"But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down." (Acts 13:14, KJV)

"And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made." (Acts 16:13, KJV)

And it will be observed in the New Earth:

"And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD." (Isaiah 66:23, KJV)

If the Sabbath were merely ceremonial, it would not predate sin, would not be in the Decalogue, and would not continue in eternity. Christ Himself declared its enduring purpose:

"And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath." (Mark 2:27-28, KJV)

The Sabbath was made "for man" — all mankind — at creation, long before there was a Jew or a ceremonial system.

Conclusion: The Fatal Flaw​

The argument collapses because it cannot distinguish between the law as a means of salvation and the law as a standard of righteousness. Paul condemns the former; he never condemns the latter:

"Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law." (Romans 3:31, KJV)

"Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God." (1 Corinthians 7:19, KJV)

"Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus." (Revelation 14:12, KJV)

The final description of God's people in Scripture unites commandment-keeping and faith in Jesus as one reality — not as opposing systems. The fruit of the Spirit and the commandments of God are not rivals. They are the interior and exterior expressions of the same transformed life: a life walking in communion with the Creator — as it was in Eden, and as it shall be in Heaven.

Those of us who are dead to the Law in Christ, and live by His Righteousness, becoming obedient to the Will of the Father. "If you love me, you will keep my commandments" is found in John 14:15
Keeping the Commandments, God's Moral Law, including God's created Holy Day. His Sabbath.

Gal 2:19-20 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. v21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain."

So, Sabbath-keeping or keeping the other nine commandments does not save anyone. Christ saves. But the idea that being saved by Christ means God’s commandments no longer matter goes against everything spoken by Christ and Paul
