I'm relying on both Jesus and myself because I believe that my actions contribute towards my salvation. As the scriptures say:
"faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."
James 2:17
"a person is justified by works and not by faith alone."

"faith apart from works is dead."

So I believe that in order for me to be saved I need to put in the righteous work, which is to live and act how Jesus is training me to, and have faith that he's backing me BECAUSE I'm following his instructions. But if I ignore his instructions then He won't back me regardless of the faith I have in Him.
Maybe purgatory. Not hell. It's like the Hotel California. You can check in but you can't ever leave.
You are rejecting that free gift of salvation and that perfect gift of righteousness.
Because you are striving to accomplish that perfection that Jesus commanded.

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having
been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
You have nothing to do with that reconciliation and your saved by His life not anything you do in your life.

You definitely have a gospel that states that your input into that reconciliation saves you.
What is amazing about grace if it's all about your own effort to realize salvation?

Did you transfer yourself from the domain of darkness to the kingdom above?
That gift of the atonement by Jesus, that perfect sacrifice for your evil ways, is what saves you.
You have the traditional heretical understanding of that free gift of salvation given to those, that call on the name
of Jesus.
The narrow road, the doorway, the Truth, is and only is Jesus at every point in the New Testament.
Do not pollute the Gospel of Jesus Christ with your pathetic attempts at a personal righteousness.
That narrow road your on is a self centered, self righteous, failed attempt to justify yourself.

If you are convinced by that preacher that James chapter 2 is THE gospel chapter, then think about this.
James 2:10

Oops! I wonder if that preacher ever committed one sin?
If so he blew it already and is guilty as if he broke the entire law.
That's what you will be judged by IF that's what you want.

If you want to try really hard, just in case Jesus didn't really do it all, the Father will let you. He will not force you to trust His Son and consider His suffering in your place. If you wish to add your own righteousness to what Jesus did, it is akin to tossing your Kleenex, flushable wipes and all manner of filthy rags at His cross, His suffering, His one and only sacrifice.
You might not see your righteousness like that, but it's very offensive to Christ, the Father and the Holy Spirit when people compare their own righteousness to that of the sinless Savior. It is also offensive to the Lord to consider that what He went through was incomplete. He said, "It is finished. And He gave up the ghost.'
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.

If he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.

Could that preacher who put his spin on James 2 as his gospel chapter up and against the entire 100 times God put BELIEVE in the gospel of John alone....might that pastor be mistaken and need to repent (change his mind) about who exactly he wants to trust?

No, it's not too much to ask. I've had a few experiences myself over the last 55 years or so. Even before I was saved, God answered my prayer. It did me no good. I told myself it was coincidence. I believed that God was real, but I imagined Him to be out to make men suffer.
It was another 8 years or so before I accepted Christ. I wrestled with God for years. He called me Jacob one time. I was stupid, relying on logic and reason and looking at self and circumstances. Now I rely entirely on the Word of God. God says that He loves me. That's enough for me now.
My experiences were real enough. But that did not help me when life went pear shaped.
My advice is to study God's word to discover what is yours already in Christ. My best "feelings", if that is the way to describe experiences, have been when I was thanking and praising God for the good things that He has done. There was one time when it was as if nothing around me existed. Just me and Jesus. A few weeks later I was complaining because the military had sent me somewhere I did not want to go.
So by all means ask God to reveal Himself to you. Moses pleaded with God to show Moses God's ways. And God answered that cry. Make sure that you have confessed any sin. You also need to examine your heart to see if there is any unforgiveness there.

Where the new covenant is concerned, it is watertight, God did not put holes in it.
Under the core terms of the new covenant what was written in applicable law is placed in believers hearts, something Paul believed had happened to gentiles believers when he wrote his letters:
Through the law we become conscious of sin Rom3:20
Therefore, if you have heartfelt consciousness of sin before God it proves you are saved and in covenant
You might benefit from a review of what Paul tells us about our salvation, and by implication what he says about his own. He describes salvation in three different ways, which I will present in a random order, just as I was taught about them. He assures us that we are saved, we have been made clean and acceptable to God. He tells us that we are being saved, that we are undergoing a cleansing process that will make us clean and acceptable to God. And he also tells us that we will be saved, that at some future point in time, God will actively cleanse us and make us acceptable to Him.
Now, if you keep all three statements in mind, the only certainty is that at some point in time, you will become cleansed and acceptable to God, whether you can see that time in your present moment of not.

I agree completely. In order to make their marriage work they need to spend time with eachother to know eachother, because the Christian life is about having an actual relationship and not just about the husband permanently working away while leaving post it notes all over the fridge or text messages on her phone to communicate with her, when instead he could just call her or come home instead to spend quality time with her at least once in a while.
I feel that I'm in fellowship with God every day with every spare minute that I get, because when I say I read bits of the Bible everyday that's a bit of an understatement, because right now I've got 7 versions of the Bible spread out on my table and they're all permanently open all the time because I'm constantly scanning, comparing, absorbing and studying His words daily like the Berean Jews of Paul's time, always trying to understand Him better while strengthening my relationship with Him as He teaches me various subjects and different life lessons through the scriptures.
God knows my heart and knows the love I have for Him and for others and how much faith I have in Him. So He knows I don't need a miracle to believe in Him, because the Bibles prophecies and The Dead Sea Scrolls should be proof enough of His existence for any rational thinking person. All I would like from Him is His seal of approval or disapproval of the way that I'm living my life right now and whether it will lead me to heaven or not.
As you probably know, most if not all of God's messenger's and prophets of old had the assurance of heaven like Adam, Enoch, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, Solomon, Elijah, the 12 Disciples, Paul etc. So why is it wrong for me to want the answer to such an obvious question? And why do some people think its almost blasphemous to ask that question when its like the elephant in the room to me and a question that I think each of us should seriously question.
I'm not talking about now. I was talking in the past tense and hypothetically. I wouldn't destroy myself now regardless of anything because I know my worth now.
