Following the law of Moses does not embody God's character traits. This is accomplished by the indwelling Spirit. That's why it is called the fruit of the Spirit. That is a false dichotomy. The Law of Moses is His instructions for how to embody His character traits and His character traits are the fruits of the Spirit, which is why the Spirit has the role of leading us to obey it (Ezekiel 36:26-27).
God did not give the Law of Moses as instructions for how to rely on our own strength. Relying on our own strength does not involve relying on anyone else, so it is contradictory to rely on our own strength by obediently relying on God's instructions. Relying on our own strength would be doing something that is completely independent of anything that God has instructed.
Keeping commandments apart from the power of Christ is relying on our own strength. One can follow the law outwardly. Following God's instructions outwardly void the internal reality is not really keeping the law. It's a form of godliness that denies the power thereof.
