The thorn could have been anything from a speech impediment, to a crushed in skull from his stoning.
Paul was the worst of those Christ died for.
But he didn't keep persecuting the church after his conversion.
BTW, Paul wrote..."Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame." (1 Cor 15:34)

What about those that did repent of all their sins and then later they went back to them
