Note the tax collector in the gospels was a man, and the poor widow with the mite was a woman. Widows were often left destitute when their husbands died.

Naomi and Ruth?
On America, until things changed, women were considered property of their husbands. Before that,of their father.

They weren't allowed to get a job, vote, inherit,or live on their own.

@Lanolin, oh,it gets worse.

"Marital rape became a crime nationwide in all 50 U.S. states on July 5, 1993. "

"By 1920, the legal doctrine allowing a husband to beat his wife was formally rejected across all U.S. states."

"True systemic protection and criminal enforcement for domestic violence victims did not become widespread until the feminist and domestic violence shelter movements of the 1970s and 1980s."

"Courts and state legislatures began formally rescinding a husband's right to physically chastise his wife in the 1870s and 1880s, with states like Alabama and Massachusetts in 1871 and Maryland in 1882 passing explicit prohibitions."

There's more,but that's bad enough.

DV (domestic violence) is a common thing Behind Closed Doors that people don't like to discuss. But it absolutely happens.

And if it happens to wives, it will happen to children. So much emotional trauma that takes years of therapy to process.

Saw a play called Pork and Poll Taxes

It did not end well. Silly racist NZ govt.

They apologised, but 100 years too late. Those Chinese miners DID pay their tax they were willing to do so as they were hardworking, but the taxes kept going up, and in the end for no good purpose because that govt didn't use that money to spend it on anything good. They just raised the taxes to keep people out.

Entire nations have fallen because of stupid tax laws, and they never tax the rich, only the poor, who can barely afford a living.

The tax only goes to enrich the ones at the top who don't pay.

Roman empire anyone? Division of the Kingdom of Israel when Solomon's sons raised the taxes so they could live in a Palace? Which required phenomenal amounts of upkeep, and was even bigger than the Temple? And just for that family, nobody else.

"The power to tax is the power to destroy" - John Marshall.

And remember today that they can just print all the money they need (creating inflation, which is effectively another form of taxation). Therefore the purpose of income taxes and similar today really is just to keep poor people poor.

People just say the one thing sure in life is death and taxes.
As a child you don't know how this works until you shockingly enter the workforce as a teen or twentyager and realise that the money you earn is not all yours, its taxed even before you receive it, even on minimum wage, and the employers keep all the profits, which are not taxed.

Something is wrong here.

Just wondering what everyone thinks of this

Is it right to evade taxes or hide money so as not to pay taxes? Apparently lots of business do this as they think it's normal.

Different countries have different tax brackets and ways of calculating tax. What do you think is fair?

Do you agree with what your country spends it on?

Would you rather live somewhere where you pay little or no tax, no matter what your income is?

Do you donate to charities and claim tax rebates as a result? As its gift and not a source of income for charity...but some charities rely on donations or regular contributions for cash-flow or income. What do you think of this?
Our Father in heaven FORBIDS loaning with interest. Even your enemies, you should lend and expect nothing in return. Yes student loans were a bugbear and election issue because the govt would charge interest on them before the law got changed and now they don't.
I don't understand interest on loans, but I learned all about shark loans when I did a money management course. However even that course encouraged predatory behaviour because it wanted you to consider investing in housing property ladder, so you could make capital gains...or commercial property. But I never had enough money in the first place to do so.

Buying a first home is hard enough, who can afford a second? Only those who already have money to play with.

I also learned about origin of credit cards, just a ploy by banks to spend money you don't have...and of course they charge interest when you forget to pay it back each month.

It's very important to have financial freedom and pay all your debts (or forgive them) but the world system is only forgiving for the already rich. It keeps the poor down.

Roman's 13:1-7

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

6This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

NIV.

I read in the paper today that one of the parties vying for the elections in NZ is proposing all children have free travel. Someone wrote a letter to the editor about this and said no taxpayers are paying for children to have free travel.

Though taxpayers aren't children so...?

Well I don't know how that works because...children do get to travel for free thats what parents are for, they have personal chauffeurs and they might have scooters and bikes they don't have to pay any rego for.

So am not sure what this is all about. Gold card members (all aged 65 and above) get free travel on public transport after 9am each day. I notice nobody wrote to the paper about those sponging old folk that taxpayers are paying for.
