I use 'frik' sometimes.... or 'son of a biscut'. But if i get more seriously angry i can be more inclined to saying much worse. Though i mostly only do that when i'm alone, since i tend to try to be alone when i get upset.

I use bad language too. And that's when guy talk shows up. I cringe each time I hear the Lord's name use in vain. I normally want to swear when I accidentally hit something. But, I tend to just let out a cry in placement of profanity. Seems easier for some reason. There are times where I just grumble... Example:

Walking into room with a bad of sugar. Drops bag. Looks at ripped bag. *sigh* "Ahhh, son of a flurrgle flik..." *mumbles and grumbles more nonsense*

There are times where I just replace the inteneded word with something else.

Playing video game: Gets himself shot in the head after working so hard to bring the enemies shield down.

"AAHHH.. Son of a..." Pauses in frustration, shakes controller and replaces phrase "doughnut!"

I swear... >_> *sigh* That little feeling to want to swear is all to firmiliar. It kinda makes it easy to catch at times... at times.

I think that cursing goes way beyond saying bad words. Once you just think about swearing, it's already a sin, so it is much harder to keep our minds and hearts pure than we think it is.

I've always hated swear words and when someone says something bad close to me they instantly apologize: "I'm sorry, Andressa!" This is funny, because I don't even have to say anything for them to do this... hahah I don't understand. Maybe it's just the fact that they don't see me saying such things... it's good to see the whole "being light" thing actually working through me. :)

Anyway, a few days ago I found myself thinking about a specific swear word a lot, like A LOT. I've never opened my mouth to say it, but several times it just crossed my mind when something bad happened. When I realized, I thought: "wow, it just needs to stop". I prayed and asked for God's help and now it is gone.

But yep, we tend to make up our sins, not just swear words, but everything else, unfortunately.

So what is it about thinking(or saying) swear words that has led you think they are sinful?

This:

"But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips." Colossians 3:8 (NIV)

And this:

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

My point is more... What makes those words filthy language?

I can say "pickle you cumquat" (orbitz) with malice or rage or any number of things. (I absolutely wouldn't use any words, swear or otherwise in this fashion)

I can also say "Oh crap" with none of these. Or if things are even more disappointing, "oh sh". The true meaning of "crap" and "sh" are the same, by substituting the second, however, the higher level of disappointment is more clearly made.

That said, I follow the rules of unclean food with so called "filthy words." If it would cause a weaker brother to fall, I won't use them around said person. As it is, a lot of people apologize for using them around me as well. I don't use them often enough for people to even realize that I do use them. That said, I think there is an appropriate time to use them. And I don't think that thinking them is a sin (given they are non-malice,non- hate, non-anger etc) unless you find yourself dwelling on them often.

No way. Thats condemnation for temptation. If i think of doing a sin, the thought pops into my mind, i'm not sinning. I'm being tempted. Being tempted is not a sin. Jesus was tempted. Its not the thought that pops into your head thats a sin, its what you do with that though that causes it to be a sin or not. If i believed every time a sinful type thought or temptation popped into my head that i was as good as sinning, i'd give up, because you can't prevent thoughts. You can only resist dwelling or acting on them.

Don't know if it counts as making up my words but, if I do swear, it's always in Munster Gaeilge so comparatively few folk know what I've said anyway!

Now I got you. :)

Well, I don't know how it works over there, but here in Brazil I could say that 90% of the swear words are related to sex (wordly view of it). I do feel offended when someone says some of them around me and I don't think it would be a good thing for christians to use them.
As for me, I just don't feel comfortable to say it, or simply thinking it, but I agree with you when you say that if it would cause a weaker brother you wouldn't use them.

That's exactly what I meant!

The first time you think, yes, it is temptation, but the second time it's your choice, you could avoid this... I don't know if I'm right to compare, but this reminds me of commiting adultery, when God says that just by one thought or one look you're already sinning. This just came to my mind now...

I think labeling certain words "bad" is silly to be honest. You can use some words a number of ways that mean nothing wrong really in the context use... or it can be terribly offensive in another...

I have no problem with people swearing around me at all unless they are being derogatory and you can do that just as easily without swearing and it's still just as offensive.

I honestly don't have a problem when I do swear myself, especially in private although I do keep it at a minimum for the sake of others. I don't think God cares about words myself and this has been something I've prayed about before and to this day I still cannot see any reason saying "WTF" or something similar, is wrong when the use in that context means nothing. It's just an expression. I do have a problem with the temper I get when I do start cussing a lot... it's not the swearing it's that I got that upset that I actually resorted to shouting a bunch of stupid words over something so stupid or whatever.

Biblically, I see nothing wrong with this certain list of words... HOWEVER, bible also says not to offend others... if someone is offended, you shouldn't do it. So if people are around who don't care about swear words, I really don't care if I swore or not... Although, I try not to swear regularly regardless. You do stand out when you don't swear... people do notice.

So while, it doesn't bother me, I don't think the words themselves are wrong, I don't like to do it unless it's needed for emphasis (sometimes people just wont listen till you get a little bit stronger and, if it's not part of your usual vocabulary, it gives it that much more punch) or I say it after hitting my head or something...

BTW, Sucks used to be considered bad back in the day but you never see anyone having problems with that word today and even in the chatroom, people say it no problem.... if you think about it though, the original meaning for that is actually quite vulgar... more so than the sh word (and the sh word... lol... yeah a perfect example of why bad words are goofy... there is no difference between that and poop, crap etc, so why is that any worse? Cause we say it is...)

I think you should try to be respectful of those around you though... best to keep it at a minimum IMO. Not for religious reasons or cause these words God has also ordained as bad but because of the social implications. It's your heart, actions and intentions that's the sin... and you can sin the same way doing the same things and not dropping a single swear word. Or you can talk completely casual dropping words left and right and still I wouldn't be able to say you're saying anything wrong if you're just describing your trip to the store or something.

I say "freakin' eh " or " son of a sharpshooter " several times a day.o_O To be honest, I do cringe when people cuss, especially if a person can't go a whole sentence without using one.

When I was a kid I used to say "oh...

SchlitzGD_2_LF.jpg

Now i just say oh shoot. I don't think they sell schlitz here in california...or maybe no one drinks it here.

I think I'd go the opposite way. The more a person uses them, the more you realize that they don't mean much to that person.

I choose the 1st, Though I do want to get rid of the F word from my vocab. That's the only one I want to get rid of. Though I think I also have the problem with the female dog word since I basically never say it.

But yeah, I just don't like the F word(even if I heard it being used in the intended way)(I guess it basically has no respect written all over the word).

Slams fingers in door!!!... Stammers!!! AHaghAhahaghhhll.......errr... er... er.. ahhh... Stuff!!! I work it all down to the word "stuff"!!!

I think some of my made-up swear words sound worse than actual swear words. :D
