Hello Red33, I apologize for the length of this but you have raised many points.
That is a nice fairy-tale but that is not the justice of God. You don't even take into consideration the fierceness of His wrath that He will pour out on the children of disobedience of that great system of Babylon. There is eternal damnation in the justice of God...
Can you tell me why God's justice would demand to torture people with suffering forever, with no way out?
What is punishment designed to do? Was it just to make the person suffer for the sake of suffering?...or was it to make the punishment an unpleasant experience?...something you wouldn't want to repeat? Why do we punish our own children? Isn't it to teach them something?
What punishment meted out to Israel was not designed to wake them up and repent, so that God could forgive them?
Eternal suffering makes no sense and is in complete opposition to the personality and purpose of the Creator.
Mk 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.
Have you read that scripture in other translations Red33?
" but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. This is a sin with eternal consequences.” (NLT)
"But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin” (Holman)
"but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin” (NASB)
"but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.” (NIV)
There is NO DAMNATION! That whole 'hell and damnation' thing died out with high button shoes! It was the invention of human imagination when people were taught to 'fear' God in the worst way.
The unforgivable sin has everlasting consequences. That consequence is everlasting DEATH. The lake of fire is the second DEATH. It is when people can die a second time....only this time there is no hope of a resurrection. It is not more sinister than that.
Mt 25:41,46 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
This is the lake of fire. A place from which no one returns. (as noted above)
Gehenna (often translated "hell") was a place where the fire never went out and the worms feed endlessly. Was this place literal? Yes!...gehenna was the Valley of Hinnom which was used for child sacrifice in Israel's ungodly past. It was converted to the city's garbage dump where the bodies of executed criminals were consumed by the fire along with the rest of Jerusalem's discarded refuse. What the fire missed, the maggots would finish. It was kept burning by the addition of sulphur, (brimstone) ensuring that the fire never went out.
Jesus used this place in an illustrative way. His Jewish audience knew exactly what it meant to be cast into gehenna. Everything that went in there was utterly destroyed. There was no burial place for the wicked to indicate that this person had ever lived.
Nothing alive was ever thrown in there.
46 “Then they will go away to eternal (everlasting) punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
Molly, would you like to explain this verse? If God is going to annihilate those who are children of disobedience, it would be as if they never existed and had no life, but the following verse in (Mk 14:21) seems to contradicts that...
Gladly. Everlasting death IS everlasting punishment. God has no interest in granting everlasting life to the wicked...that is something he reserves for the righteous. In order to punish the wicked eternally, he would have to grant them everlasting life, would he not? This is not his purpose. He does not want to torture people...he never has and never will.
Why would his justice demand more than the crime deserved? Why would the punishment be meted out for the sake of punishment with no rehabilitation possible? When did God ever do something like that? In Israel, if a crime was committed, the stated penalty was compensation for the victim, or in the case of a capital offence, the death penalty applied. The highest penalty a person could pay for ANY crime, was death.
There were no prisons in Israel. God never said to incarcerate anyone. The closest thing to a prison was a city of refuge where an accidental manslayer could go to escape the death penalty. He had the freedom to roam the city, but if he stepped outside he could be legally put to death.
21 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
If you are born and remained a child of disobedience and only the gift of life is taken from you and you are annihilated, why not live according to the lusts and appetites of the flesh and just live it up, after all you will only be annealed and never even know that you existed.
You just described most of the world!
Those who are saved are "few". (Matt 7:13-14) Those annihilated by God at Armageddon will never be remembered. There are 'Christians' as we speak who are so sure that they are saved, but will suffer rejection when Christ comes to judge the world. (Matt 7:21-23) They rely on their own understanding of what Christianity is and what it means, but it is not acceptable to Christ Jesus. There are only "sheep" and "goats" in the world. What did Jesus say was the determining factor in his separation of them? Read Matt 25:31-46 and tell me what you think it is.
You rule out the book of life and the other books of (Rev 20:12,13) and all the judgments that are based upon what is written in those books. Why keep written books if God is just going to annihilate them in the end in the lake of fire? Punish them in the lake of fire to only annihilate them later and you call that justice. That is a very warped sense of justice that has nothing to do with the justice of God.
That is a very warped version of what you think I have said. Let me explain....
No one is written in the book of life who will not live forever. What is the criteria for getting one's name in the book of life to start with? Obedience to God's laws come first and foremost.
There are two roads, Jesus said.....the road to life and the road to death. According to Jesus, the majority are on the wrong road. It demands nothing of them....it is broad and easy, no hassles, no impediments, no real demands.
True followers of Christ were to be hated and persecuted on a cramped and narrow road. The going was to be hard with many trials. Any wonder people invented a Christianity that was easy. They broadened the gate and the road until it looked just like the other one.
If Christ returned today...who would he accept as his own?
The big picture is not very complicated at all. Christendom's version of things makes it extremely complex.
Those alive when Christ returns, will either live or die.
"and to you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from Heaven with His mighty angels,in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who know not God, and who obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power" (2 Thess 1:7-9. KJ21)
The punishment is "everlasting destruction"...not everlasting torture or suffering. Who will merit this punishment? Those who don't know God because they don't want to...and those who know but don't obey.
Those who have paid sin's wages will be returned to life by means of a resurrection. Both "righteous and unrighteous" will be called out of their tombs. (John 5:28, 29) They have not been anywhere, but sleeping in death. (Eccl 9:5, 6, 10; John 11:11)
When you invent immortal souls, you have to invent places for them to go. The Bible does not do that.
If the souls of those who have died are in heaven watching the sufferings of their loved ones on earth, then how would heaven be a happy place? They would be suffering as much as we are.
For the 1,000 years of Christ's reign, God has selected a finite number of faithful humans to rule with Christ in heaven.(Rev 20:6; Rev 14:1, 3) These are the only ones who go there. They alone are granted immortality.
An educational program will be implemented to instruct all mankind in Jehovah's ways. The earth will then become 'filled with the knowledge of Jehovah'.
Isaiah 11:1-9 gives us a picture of this wonderful restoration. Rev 21:1-4 also pictures this time.
At the end of the 1,000 years, satan will be loosed from his abyss to test perfected mankind one last time. (Rev 20:7, 8)
Those who prove loyal to God in this test will be granted everlasting life, having their name written in the book of life, permanently. Those who fail, can expect to be eliminated the fire that God uses to destroy them.
Jesus hands the now tried and tested human family back to his Father and the whole purpose of the kingdom has come to a completion. We go back to what God purposed in Eden. An earth 'filled' with righteous humans who will serve God obediently for all eternity.
The paradise conditions that Adam lost, are restored...all thanks to the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus, provided by his Father, to whom all praise and glory must go.
