A Letter To Single Christians (part 1)

1Corinthians 7:38 So then he who marries his betrothed does well, and he who refrains from marriage will do even better.

Why is it better to be single? Well, plain and simple, there is more of you for God. When you are married you are “a threefold cord” (Ecc 4:12). Cord number one: You. Cord number two: God. Cord number three: Your spouse. God is in the center; it’s a wonderful thing. When you’re single it’s you and it’s God; it’s a better thing. We’ll never fully realize it as single people, but having a spouse takes a lot of diligence. So much so that even when God is put first, He’ll never have you all to Himself again.

But I would be doing a disservice to singleness if I only compared it to marriage. After all, the bible says in Galatians 6:4 not to compare yourself with someone else. It’s dangerous to do so and yet it’s done so often between being married and being single. Too often “single” is seen as the opposite of “married”, but if we look back to Ecclesiastes, the opposite of two (single) is not three (married). They’re not opposite, they’re just different. The only way it would make sense to say that they are opposites is if “single” represented “alone”, and “married” represented “together”, and how are we ever to be alone if we have God? Impossible.

Ultimately what we need to learn (which will benefit us greatly in all walks of life) is to enjoy the season that we’re in. Every season is a good season if you’re walking with God. What a crime against God to think there is even one day of your life that is any less worthy than the next. God gave us each day for a purpose.

Ephesians 5:15-16 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

If you are just waiting out your single days until you get married, you are a fool wasting time and robbing God. Verse 17 says “therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” What is God’s will for you in this season? How does he want you to “redeem the time”? Because the fact is, the day will come when you’re not single anymore and in most cases you never will be again. If you don’t redeem the time as a single person now, You’ll have missed your chance

I could never come to terms with Pauls writing on this subject when I didn't have a girlfriend, but now that I do, I can understand the points he makes. It is interesting however, that in Pauls letter to Timothy he recommends that pastors and deacons should in fact have a wife.

i agree with your last paragraph completely, but a threefold cord is always stronger than a twofold cord.

A frequently quoted verse to support the idea that church leadership should be married. However it is best rendered, "the husband of ONLY one wife" as in not engaged in a polygamous marriage.

I think you hammered the nail on the final paragraph. It is foolish to wait out your single days to get married. If your just going to sit and waste your time doing nothing what good will you be to your future spouse? I think God uses our seasons of being single in order to get our attention on Him, find our refuge and peace with Him, and be content with Him, so that when we are married we have a tried and true relationship with Him, and because we spent the time to know Him better we know and understand love more than we did before.

I'm on my stupid phone so I can't Like this post but, *thumbs up*

Yes, very well put, I am 51 and still single, I spent most of my lukewarm Christian experience trying to get hooked up with the opposite sex, and was in huge compromise, spent tons of money on dating sites, clubs, etc,, and to no avail.

I was seeking my own way apart from God, He waited patiently for me wake up, stop searching or worrying if I will be single the rest of my short life here on this fallen world.
His main concern with the single, weather, divorced, never married, widowed etc, is holiness, purity, and obedience to His son Jesus Christ, He is patiently waiting for all to come to Him in brokenness through real repentance and faith(the sin stops) which means the searching for a mate is over, searching for truth, holiness, and heart purity begins, and IF its in Gods will for you to be married, then He is more than gracious enough to supply you a help mate!
Gods wills will is simple:
Jas 1:21 Therefore putting aside all filthiness and overflowing of evil, receive in meekness the implanted Word, which is able to save your souls.
Jas 1:22 But become doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service.
Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in order to prove by you what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God.
Do not put yourself in harms way or give a foothold for the devil to cause you to fall into immorality, you must crucify your flesh with Christ, through repentance(stop all vile sin and disobedience)seek His great mercy while it can be found, and put your focus on walking in the truth, you wont be popular, as you stand for the truth, living a life pleasing to God, being a doer of His word.
God is more interested in our character and conduct, than weather we are comfortable or without a mate, it will come, but He must be put first in your life, which comes with a high price, letting go of self, standing against the lies being taught as truth today, and spending your free time in His word, divorcing yourself form the vain attractions of the world, while most who profess Christ enjoy, and I am talking about being OF the world. There must be a clear division between those who walk in the light, and guard their heart, and those who walk in darkness, and mix the holy with the profane, where the separation is gone, and friendship with the world is more important to being Christ like, separated, holy, and without spot!
2Co 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what fellowship does righteousness have with lawlessness? And what partnership does light have with darkness?
2Co 6:15 And what agreement does Christ have with Belial? Or what part does a believer have with an unbeliever?
2Co 6:16 And what agreement does a temple of God have with idols? For you are the temple of the living God, as God has said, "I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people."
2Co 6:17 Therefore come out from among them and be separated, says the Lord, and do not touch the unclean thing. And I will receive you
2Co 6:18 and I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.

Hopefully Part Two won't leave any plot holes... The last one was alright. Fairly agreeable. But not my cup of tea.
