Dare I post another blog entry? Hopefully this one will be less controvercial.
A Letter To Single Christians (part 1)
1Corinthians 7:38 So then he who marries his betrothed does well, and he who refrains from marriage will do even better.
Why is it better to be single? Well, plain and simple, there is more of you for God. When you are married you are “a threefold cord” (Ecc 4:12). Cord number one: You. Cord number two: God. Cord number three: Your spouse. God is in the center; it’s a wonderful thing. When you’re single it’s you and it’s God; it’s a better thing. We’ll never fully realize it as single people, but having a spouse takes a lot of diligence. So much so that even when God is put first, He’ll never have you all to Himself again.
But I would be doing a disservice to singleness if I only compared it to marriage. After all, the bible says in Galatians 6:4 not to compare yourself with someone else. It’s dangerous to do so and yet it’s done so often between being married and being single. Too often “single” is seen as the opposite of “married”, but if we look back to Ecclesiastes, the opposite of two (single) is not three (married). They’re not opposite, they’re just different. The only way it would make sense to say that they are opposites is if “single” represented “alone”, and “married” represented “together”, and how are we ever to be alone if we have God? Impossible.
Ultimately what we need to learn (which will benefit us greatly in all walks of life) is to enjoy the season that we’re in. Every season is a good season if you’re walking with God. What a crime against God to think there is even one day of your life that is any less worthy than the next. God gave us each day for a purpose.
Ephesians 5:15-16 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
If you are just waiting out your single days until you get married, you are a fool wasting time and robbing God. Verse 17 says “therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” What is God’s will for you in this season? How does he want you to “redeem the time”? Because the fact is, the day will come when you’re not single anymore and in most cases you never will be again. If you don’t redeem the time as a single person now, You’ll have missed your chance
