I'm classifying people looking for a mate into three categories.
1. The Unicorn Hunter.
2. The Train-wreck Fanatic
3. The Volvo "Settler"
The Unicorn Hunter
Mitt Romney had his binders full of women, and The Unicorn Hunter has their binder full of ideals, standards and general utopic ideas of how things must be! It's a tough climb for The Unicorn Hunter. They're scaling Candy Mountain with all those binders, and all those high ideals. Ultimately they're looking for something that doesn't exist. But you know what? They don't care! Their binders and ideals tell them differently, and they'll scale Candy Mountain at any cost.
Of course we know what happens to people on Candy Mountain.
The Train-wreck Fanatic
The Train-wreck Fanatic isn't rare at all. For some reason they love relationship carnage. Somewhere deep within their psyche there is an itch for something that will never work out. There isn't a binder full of anything for these people. It's more like a duffle bag hastily stuffed with unfolded clothes and a worn out toothbrush, packed just before hopping on a train to "I have no idea where I'm going-istan".
The Volvo "Settler"
Now there is nothing fancy about the orange Volvo. It's functional. It works. And most of all, it actually exists!
"Settler" is put in quotation marks, because our Unicorn Hunters can't fathom the idea that you settled for anything less than a non-existent unicorn. The UHs see people with their trustworthy Volvos, and assume they have "settled". But it's not that the VSs have settled. No actually they have made a purposeful choice to live in reality.
Sure a Volvo needs oil changes, regular maintenance, and may lose a muffler once in a while.
But you know what?
At least the Volvo exists!
Yes the Volvo has flaws. No it's not a pretty pink unicorn.
But again...
AT LEAST THE VOLVO EXISTS.
The Train-wreck fanatics will view the VSs as "settlers" too.
They'll say the Volvo is boring.
Sure, the trusty orange Volvo may be boring. On the other hand, there is no carnage. Well maybe just a little, because you may get dirty looks for the color orange. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
So in conclusion.
Unicorns don't exist, so don't hunt them.
Train-wrecks are dangerous, so don't be a fan.
Volvo's exist, they're functional, and you're not "settling" if you decide to accept something that actually exists.
Keep off of Candy Mountain.
