Wretched man? Grow up. So where would Christianity be today if Martin Luther didn't bring the church back to God's Word (salvation by faith alone etc.)?
Since the Reformation was the will of God, I suppose, would've chosen another servant. After all, it was God's doing, not man's.;)

I think looking at Martin Luther as a champion of faith is quite a bit overdone. If God hadn't chose Luther, he would've chose someone else.
Was Balaam a hero? Why not? He spoke for God didn't he?
Was Nebuchadnezzar a hero? Why not? Didn't he see to it that all Israel's enemies were destroyed for what they did to them?
Was Jonah a hero? Why not? Didn't he speak for God as a prophet?
Was Balaam's donkey a hero? Why not? Didn't he also speak for God? Didn't he help save Balaam's life?

Christian people seem important because Of the way God uses them. We have seen from the examples above that
you don't have to be holy, or even saved to be used by God. To say that Martin Luther, or any other man in history was a champion of faith could be a false judgment because God chooses anybody he pleases. Just because God uses someone doesn't give us the right to make them a superstar.

Here's what I find interesting.

We tend to base acceptance or rejection of someone on their historical distance from us, and on their being alive or dead.

I think it's been established that Luther had some strong anti-Jew statements.
Many people won't outright reject his ministry, teaching and the like.
Why?
Well that was way back then, and we can take the good and cutoff the bad.

Yet if there were a living teacher who had strong anti-Jew statements, or similar things, most would tell you to ignore their entire ministry, teaching, and the like.

There isn't as much mercy for living people as there is for dead people.

That's just an honest observation from my view.
Maybe I'm blurring lines.
If so please rattle my cage and inform me.

Now if we outright reject living teachers who have very troublesome doctrines/teachings/life styles/whatever, what would the implications be if we applied the same standard to the dead and long gone? Would we have to outright reject the reformation?

Again, if I'm blurring lines (Which I have a bad habit of doing.) please fill me in and rattle my cage.

This is interesting. What are we to see in people? Martin Luther had terrible faults. Martin Luther did outstanding things. What are we to see in this man, his faults or his good. What are we to think of him?

Some say he had faults so lets throw out all he said and did. Some say he did wonderful things so lets accept all he said. I don't think either of these ideas are right. I think we are to accept the good and reject the bad, and keep the man himself as someone we thank God for that God could use him, and forget the faults as something that God will take care of.

We see this in all the people around us. Some people say look at the bad in that person and they put them under shunning. They are cutting off their nose to spite their face. Let me get personal.

I have a son in law so outstanding he was one of the few people given the St George metal in England. He has books written about him. The deeds of kindness he did could fill a book. Every month he gave me $250, and he didn't have this to spare.

I could give you his faults, and they were glaring. It was so bad I was afraid to go to their house. If you looked at his faults only, the marriage could not be. Yet, this man was my dear son, he was my daughter's soul mate. It took some doing for us both to live around the faults, but we both loved him dearly.

What a loss it would have been for both of us to zero in on his faults.

Still, you make a good point. I have found flashes of truth in Rob Bell's writings (for example) but that doesn't mean I need to accept everything he teaches (that would be very dangerous).

Ive not seen anyone Post what Martin Luther did to change the way people viewed
jews for so many years. Which makes it possible for me to say they do not want to understand the whole story
about Martin Luthers whole sentiment on the jews. My thinking is that if they had more info they would actually
see a slightly different man, and the place and times he was in. And could probably see his position.
Im fine with the attitude that no man is perfect but im not quite sure too many people really understand Luthers
position. And most likely think worst thoughts than he deserves. To just say he hated jews is just uninformed.

The thing is, few orthodox believers I know would say...

Go ahead..read the Rob Bell book...He has good stuff to say....

Most folks would outright reject and say dont go near it..

Yet with Martin Luther or any dead guy...a VERY different attitude.

I have never said I approved of what they are doing, however I do believe they still are part of Gods plan, I don't understand all of it but God is God and what is written is written as His Word will not return to Him void. Please don't vent your hate for them on me JUST because I happen to believe contrary to what you believe okay?....let's agree to disagree
i don't hate them.
i love them....I'M ONE OF THEM <<< gentiles!

i abhor the ignorance of evangelicals who walk around blindly claiming gentiles from the land of Gog and Magog whose ancestors converted to Talmudic Judaism (an occult pagan religion) 700 YEARS after the old Covenant ended are or ever were the jews of scripture.

i don't question why unregenerate fallen men (jews and arabs) murder each other.....the fact that people who claim the Name of Jesus turn a blind eye to one group's SIN because they believed the greatest HOAX ever perpetrated in the Chruch - EVEN THOUGH IT WAS FORETOLD!

they still believe it and teach it and enable THE SYNAGOGUE OF SATAN.
that makes them PART OF IT.

so don't talk to me about hate.
don't pretend you're a Christian if you don't read the Bible or know who is the Israel of God.
and don't pretend you love the jews either....you're AFRAID OF THEM.

that's your problem.
plus you watch too much tv and love to swallow propaganda.
it was SO EASY.

zone,

You've really got no legitimate argument whatsoever on this matter do you, 'cause there really is no legitimate argument in defense of the man that Luther was. You shoot blanks, and make a lot of threats, but that's all there is. I've noticed that you bark a lot around here, but you've got no bite.

I was protestant too for a long long time, zone, that is until I really studied Church history and her origins from the time of Christ and the Apostles, and studied also without a slanted view the reformation, and then naturally realized the terrible absurdities of the protestant reformation of the 1500's and the ugly truth concerning Martin Luther. I, like you, tried to deny it for a while. Though once the Truth is staring one in the face and it becomes undeniable then it is a crime to continue looking away and deny it just to try and save face.

Peace be with you. Have a happy Easter. God bless.
i rarely discuss Luther. he's dead.
only when guys like you come along and try to undo the reformation.
so you went to Rome.
that's your problem...isn't it?

Are you sure about that? Luther had a price on his head for a time. He had to translate a portion of the Bible into German whilst in hiding.
oh i know Tin.
let's all go to a mass in Latin we can't understand and never learn to read, and believe we have to earn our way to heaven but go through pugatory first.

ya that's a good reason to hate on Luther.

incidentally....if people were faithful to what the Bible ACTUALLY says, and honest about what really goes on the in the world and not cowardly about the truth, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

there's one gospel for jew and gentile: LAND ain't it; special treatment ain't it; unfulfilled promises ain't it; arms and AIPAC aren't it; a future 1,000 years ain't it.

THE GOSPEL.

i find Luther to be the cop-out/excuse for all kinds of things.....all kinds of unbiblical movements.
all kinds of false doctrine and eschatologies and world views....all blamed on Luther.
distorted HISTORY....lies.

i wonder what it is that's REALLY going on.....oh i know.
Dispensationalism and Three Waves.
the Fourth leading "back" to Judaism via the HR movement.

you were cut on the 8th day?
what are you doing at CC?
you should be in Israel taking back your Land.

i don't know which tribe you are from.
some people say white people are the jews.
others say black people are.

so it depends on your RACE apparently.
what color are you?

oh ...never mind.
you were born a jew so that means......hey.....aren't you supposed to be BLINDED FOR YOUR SALVATION?

how is it you got saved?

how did you get moved from the Old Testament Wineskin Jews Olive Tree to the.....er....

anyways, i don't know which tribe you are from. please PM when you find out.
i need to take hold of your skirt because i have heard God is with you.

Copout is the truth. The only reason i went to study his work
was because of what i heard about his antisemitism. Then read
some of his writings(bondage of the will) and other commentaries.
then finally just combed through all there was on
him. And the antisemitism part i see isnt really understood by those
who only play one side of the issue. Not even a small bit of what he
lived with and what he did on behalf of jews.....i think i kinda see
what made him go snap. But most people dont know that because they
didnt do their own homework.

A few days ago a friend of mine asked me about Martin Luther.
He said he read a historical book where it said Hittler quoted Luther's words to convince the German people to hate Jews.
I wonder if anyone knows anything about this or are just distortions of what really happened?
The Holy Bible itself is anti-semitic....and anti-non-semitic...as it pertains to anyone rejecting The Son as The truth.

Don't fall into the 'politically correct' movement that panders to the self-pity of Christ deniers.

Yeh, look, about that indulgences thing, that was done by a few corrupt priests and actually went against Catholic Doctrine, which says these things shall not be done within the Catholic Church. It had nothing to do with the teachings of the Catholic Church about faith.
actually the selling of indulgences had the full support of the roman catholic church...it wasn't just a few corrupt priests...it was the whole roman catholic church from the pope down...

if necessary i can quote the papal bulls that prove it...

And the Catholic Church DOES test everything against Scripture. But you have to remember that where we differ from eachother is in the interpretations of Scripture.
this is what we call 'the fox guarding the hen house'

basically saying 'according to the roman catholic church they don't contradict scripture'
