I've never really seen any infomercials where I thought "I HAVE to have that!"
I rarely react to the pitch. I react to the LEAD UP to the pitch. You know, the scenes in black and white, showing those poor souls trying to do some mundane task that is unthinkably difficult and failing miserably, because they don't have the product that's about to be shown. It always ends with the person getting fed up to the point that they throw down their mop or fling their frying pan into the garbage, or they're constantly stabbing their hands with the kitchen knife or they stick their Bluetooth earpiece into their nostril because THIS IS JUST SO CONFUSING AND DIFFICULT WHY CAN'T I HOLD ALL THESE ORANGES!!!
I am dumbfounded by these people. Do they really exist? Here are some of my thoughts.
"Really? You are unable to flip an egg in a teflon pan with a spatula? Yet somehow you managed to put your pants on correctly."
"Every brownie recipe in existence starts with buttering and flouring the pan. This is not rocket science."
"Because no human being has ever figured out how to stack store-bought plastic containers and their lids neatly. Everyone just throws them in the cupboard and slams the door shut, because, that's what logical people do, obviously."
"Pancakes are not this difficult. And if they are, then you solve the problem by buying a waffle iron instead of...oh, a special spatula! That's going to fix the fact that they didn't oil the pan, sure."
"Orrrrrr...you could learn to cut your food the right way, and then all you need is a knife and a cutting board. No disassembly required."
Ah, the American spirit of entreprenuership. Built on the adage that there's a sucker born every minute.
Sidenote - the TURBIETOWEL IS AWESOME. It's the one product that completely lives up to its claims that I've tried. If you have long hair and you refuse to blowdry (as I do), they are indispensible.
