A friend of mine had to learn the hard way since his parents couldn't afford one. I think I was slightly more fortunate in some ways as the school provided one for is in class, if it was needed, I'd probably be in the same situation.

I just chose not to allow my kids the "easy way out" of school because I want them to know how
to do things by using their head. I have had so many parents tell me that their kids don't know
some basic math from 7th grade because they have always had to do it on a calculator. I know
they will get the chance in college to use a calculator more.

we have people with the "high school diploma" who cant even read.. and many who couldnt figure out the change for $1.00 - $0.86 without a computer telling them..

Kinda makes me wanna see the nation tossed back into 1890 tech wise just for laughs.

That happens so many times at my work. I will have one of my employees call me over because they
put the wrong amount in the computer and cant figure out the difference to give the customer the right
change. When I rattle off the amount they are literally in awe. It is so sad!!!

My pharmacology prof (who is a nurse) asked how many of us were going to be nurses as well. I was one of a few who raised their hand. She looked right at me and said, "You will be in an ER or OR and not have a calculator on you. You'd better know how to do this stuff in your head or pull out a pin and do the math on your scrub pants." I'm not thrilled about using my scrubs as scratch paper, but I'll be glad I can do the math without a calculator at some point, I'm sure.

part of me really wants to see a big solar flare wipe out all this technology. no computers, no internet, no cell phones.
oh how nice it would be.

There will be plenty of times you will probably have to do just that and be so thankful that
they gave it to you straight.

I don't see why a nurse in the ER, OR or any other ward would need a calculator. All of the calculating is done in the pharmacy when the pharmacist transcribes the doctor's orders into very easy to read directions that get printed onto the PT's drug vial, IV or medication bag, or when the pharmacy tech reconstitutes a solution or has to compound an IV. The only exception might be figuring out drop rates for infusion of an IV but I think the IV machine automatically figures that out now. :p

Perhaps, but I'm gonna take the word of a woman who's been there and done that. :p
 
When I studied to be a nurse we had a test on calculating doses of medicine: +, - * and %
You needed 100% to pass (duh...). 2/3 of the students failed the first attempt :/ ...even I passed and math is Greek to me. No wait, it's worse, because at least I like greek

My problem is I have no use for math on a daily basis (apart from " a milk plus a bread equals ten pence less than what's in my pocket"), so I forget how to do math on paper.
