I never used the words 'rich' or 'wealthy' in my posts. I wrote classy, well dressed, and enjoys dining out. I enjoy these things, and dressing well, and I sure am not rich or wealthy.

Gotta post this quick because I'm at work on break. I want a Godly man first and foremost. I want a spiritual head of household I want someone who will go to church with me and wants to talk about The Lord. I don't care about his job, how much he makes, or if he lives in polos and cargo pants. It's his relationship with God that matters most to me.

That being said, I hope that whomever I marry (if I marry) wants the same for me and of me.

Gotta go!

I have met those that present themselves outwardly in a fashion that is pleasing to the eye, yet after time it was discovered that inwardly they were full of the pride of life.

The post topic says "instead". So to answer that question, it would be because we are sometimes drawn away by the lust of the eye and therefore take our eyes off of the righteousness of God.
Many of the servants of God presented in scripture were not comely. It is written that even Jesus was not comely (pleasant to the eye). Many of them were single.

John the baptist lived in the wilderness eating locusts and honey, not exactly a suit and tie or fashion environment.

Moses was not eloquent in speech. Kind of like a guy I know that seems very awkward when he speaks but his words minister grace and peace to the hearers. If one were to judge him by how he talks, they would probably not want to listen. But if one heard the words he speaks, then they would be blessed.

Abraham was blessed by God with wealth and had Sarah and so was Isaac.

Job was wealthy by his own means, and lost it all. His wife based his integrity as a man on his financial success and told him to curse God and die. Yet Job trusted God despite his circumstances. Then God blessed him and made him wealthier than before. His wife is never mentioned again.

The Proverbs 31 woman of great virtue is shown as being diligent and hard working. She is supportive and works with him and independently in their endeavors. While the man should be known to others by his diligence, he is also known because of hers.

I have seen a great number of marriages come to an end due to hard times like Job. Suddenly either the man or woman is no longer supportive of the other and leaves them. Yet Jesus says that the only reason to leave is because of fornication (infidelity).

I guess this could raise another question to both men and women. Would you continue forsaking all others even in poverty? Or would you instead seek to find someone else?

One last thing, I have heard it preached that one should show financial wealth as a fruit that they are being obedient and blessed by God. There are those that are blessed in this way. But for those like John the baptist, the disciples that left their nets (means of income), and those that even today sell all that they have to go to other nations to preach the gospel; great is their reward in Heaven.

Matthew 6

The Lord giveth and the lord Taketh away ...
He brought me to a season of wealth , then to a season of being a proverb 31 woman. Currently, I stepped off the corporate ladder from that proverb 31 place, into the season I am "completely" unfamiliar in .. He has asked me to lay down my nets.. A season where He is revealing Many things! my trust and dependency in Him great.. Probably a preparation taking place for deeper roots in Him..I have not crashed or burned and the Lord is completely sustaining me.. a true test in my heart towards Him.. it has truly built up my confidence in all His ability as well as His promised provision ... He prepares His saints to be in and out of season .. He has brought me to a place of absolute contentment in this .. So much so that I know I could hang with John the baptist and Moses in the same season as you are presenting here..
I finding it is in our confidence in Him, that we are secure!
Forsake poverty ? Never ! I have become friends with it in christ ..
the time is coming when the season will change .. Whatever it is Lord.. Make me ready!!
all glory , honor, and praise unto Him ...
our God is absolutely incredible you guys !!!

One thing i find so interesting in this season is ..
I may be in poverty for a short season , but poverty isn't in me...
I know If the Lord wants me to climb up onto another ladder, He has equipped me to do so ..

It cost a lot of money to wine and dine and dress "classy".
Also, does this thread apply to women?

Matthew 6:19

*Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

*But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

*For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

What about those of us who married for love? I think my husband had t shirt on when we met, but he had the sweetest smile.

I think there is a difference with being penniless and just being cheap. If he is broke, thats one thing. I am a student, I am broke too. But I still manage to dress decently. I am sorry but if the guy is just making excuses to be cheap, because he is too lazy to dress decently, I won't bother. Too many guys these days settle for a boyish image- grow up and dress like a man, because thats who you are. Yes, I have standards- which will probably cause me to be single for the rest of my life. I don't know if that says something about me or the men in our society. Thats up to you to determine.

Nobody but God has it all. And I'll be the first to admit that it's something easier understood than applied to in life.

Hey arwen83, I'm a virgin. I've also had spiritual encounters and can tell you that demons have been after me my whole life. I'm saving my first kiss for marriage. I've been going to church for most of my life... In short, I'm a good "catch" and of Godly character. Yet, I dress "boyish." I still dress like I was in high school lol.... Also, I have tried/try to dress "ugly" and "unattractive" purposely. Why would I do that? I did it For Godly reasons. I hate superficiality. I hate sin and that should be normal among Christian thinking. I dress "badly" with the purpose of avoiding women that have "high standards." Women who want to judge me by the way I look. It's worth mentioning that I'm handsome and if I wanted to... can get beautiful women just by looking at them. But, to avoid superficial women I have dressed less appealing and not fixed myself up.

The scriptures are clear on this subject...

1 Samuel 16:7

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

Proverbs 31:30

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

1 Peter 3:3-4

Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.

1 Timothy 2:9

Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,

Matthew 23:28

So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

So, why would a man or women not dress well? One reason could be because he or she is looking to do or stay within God's will. That's why... and unfortunately, I imagine you might've missed out on Godly men out there for sticking to your standards so firmly.

To add into my last post..

Another reason I decided not to dress so well and appealing was so women wouldn't lust after me. I felt conscious about it. So, again... for God's will is why someone might dress "badly."

And yes I know, ultimately I can't control whether someone lusts or not... but I think it's clear that the way I dress can still help to some extent... think about it.

A clean shirt and pair of pants is all I ask for--pants that don't look like you've slept in them scores major points. A lot of guys seem to have problems managing even that--not all, of course, but many. It doesn't matter if they're clothes from the thrift shop--a neat appearance--combed hair, brushed teeth, pants that don't look like you've unwadded them from the bottom of the laundry basket--goes a long way in making a good impression.

And, to my knowledge, a well-fitting, (not ill-fitting or too tight) outfit such as this (clean shirt, pressed pants) is also generally not a lust magnet, at least not to me.

Unless, I suppose, one is lusting after sparkling cleanliness, or that fact that she's looking at a many who cares about his appearance and hygiene.

(This is also just me but I tend to NOT be attracted to guys who try to show off their work at the gym simply because it really does seem like they're trying too hard and putting too much faith in appearance alone.)

I've always been attracted to the kinda shy guy in the corner who is the most interesting person in the room, if you just talk to him.

But it does help if he wears a clean shirt and pants.

I am rubbing my eyes trying to believe what I'm reading ...

the day is coming where thread will be "singed off.".. are you "real sure" you want cotton protecting you over armor...
Because when that happens Because if that's the man you choose, he's going to be more concerned about His own nakedness and covering it up then he is about covering you...

This thread is revealing some very scary things in the body ... WHAT is going on !!!!

My best friend in high school was accused by others as being a pretty boy. He always dressed fashionably and did his hair really nice. The girls flocked to him.
After high school, he married a woman that would be considered very beautiful outwardly. She had long blond hair and big brown eyes and was very fit.
After I received the Lord Jesus, I continued to visit them. I would minister to them and tell them about Jesus.
They were considered a VERY attractive couple by many.
During one of my visits, his wife approached me saying,
"I really love him and I think he is the best-looking man I have ever known. I feel bad that I have been a bit disgusted by him."
A bit confused, I asked her to explain.
She said, "Well, since I have known him (about 6 years), he never bathes more than once or twice a week. He covers it up with cologne and such so no one probably knows this. He is not circumcised and it disgusts me when we are being intimate. I don't know what to do."

I was perplexed. He had been my best friend for about 8 years and I never knew this about him. The only thing I could recommend to her was to communicate to him about how she felt... delicately.

As for me, I bathe and brush my teeth once and sometimes twice per day. My clothes are tattered with holes in them and have paint, roofing tar, and other construction materials. My hair is usually tossed and unkempt either from one of my work hoodies, wind while up on a ladder, or scratching at my head because of dust and debris.
My fingernails are uneven and rough from constant hard-work with my hands. Scratches, scrapes, and scars are evident on my hands, arms, and other parts of my body. My reading glasses have speckles of paint around the rims. I peel it off and then it is right back again.

I am not the classy-looking guy with the charming smile smiling at you over a glass of wine (however, I do enjoy a good glass of wine) in a fashionable suit and tie. I am the guy that stops when you are broken down on the side of the highway because I don't care about getting some grease under my fingernails and dirt on my clothes if it means helping to get you home.

I'm not the guy who shows up with his chest puffed out showing off his new threads. I'm the guy sitting back watching, ready to jump up and step in when someone is being bullied. A little blood on my threads won't cost me a thing. Give me sackcloth and a sling and stones.
Yep, I'm the guy that spends most of his time alone with God and am pleased to do so. :)
You will see me in a tuxedo or suit at a wedding or other special event. Better take a picture if you want to see it often. lol

I love my old friend dearly and I talk to him from time to time still hoping that he will receive Jesus. He hasn't changed much. He still doesn't hold a job very long and avoids any kind of work that involves hard labor or dirt. He still dresses fashionably while his children go hungry (another thing people would not know about him by appearance). He still chases after "pretty" women (most of which are over 10 years younger than him) and then can't understand why he is left broken and hurt after they find out how shallow his beauty is and leave.

Anyways, see you at the side of the road sometime. And don't worry, I keep tire patch kits, tools, and jumper cables in the trunk. ;-P
