You missed my point.

I was assuming the guy involved is a God-fearing Christian... For me, that kinda goes without saying.

And I believe in a God-fearing guy who believes in being a good steward of what he has, including his clothes (no matter what their cost or lack there of) and appearance.

Also, right in my post, I already said exactly what you're saying--that sometimes the most interesting guy in the room is the one in the corner, if only you take the time to talk to him. In fact, in my original post in this thread, I already stated that I've never had an incidence where I was attracted to a guy's material things because none of the guys I had relationships with ever had anything!

If you read my post :) it's there already. ;) Sitting down and talking to him is exactly my point, but a clean, neat does make a difference in how approachable a person appears to be.

All I'm saying is, no matter what someone does or does not have, take the time to look like you care about what God entrusts you with.

I think your going off on a tangent... to try to make a point. By stretching your own words to mean other things... I'm suspicious that your either purposely trying to fool me or you just accidentally did that.

You said it's all in there. Like, when you say you'd sit down and talk to a man and get to know him. You refereed to a SPECIFIC guy... a kind of guy your attracted to, NOT ALL GUYS. So, no that's not the same thing I said. That wasn't there so it wasn't all in there. The worst thing is that you said what we both said was "exactly" the same. (I'll bold that it for you)

You talked about a God-fearing Christian. This wasn't talked about... I don't know why you brought it up? Yeah, it does go without saying. But, I was talking about whether you would approach Christian men with the factor of appearance.

And I still think your wrong. I'm not perfect but I'd like to think I'm a half-way decent guy that any lady would appreciate to some extent... and there was a night I went out with a young adult group and my hair wasn't combed just the way you'd like. It happens. There's been times my shirt was stained. And apparently I've been wearing certain clothes for too long... my brother shaked his head and said ____ (name) I wouldn't wear that outside. I never noticed until they told me. So, they talked me to into buying new clothes.

You know, I think have been taking care of what God has entrusted me in. My carelessness of the way I look and others look is a gift from God and while I may look bad and not as neat sometimes. I know that what I'm taking care of is much better. But hey, I'm a virgin by choice, I'm saving my first kiss for marriage, God has blessed me with a vision, and sure women will pass me by. That's okay because I don't want them anyways. I can see the world a lot better because of this. I see people.

You say a nice shirt and pants makes someone more approachable. Well, I say that a willingness to approach people no-matter what they look and not be repulsed by them makes them far more approachable then someone who wears clean or nice clothes.

This is why I decided not to look as appealing as I can look, to avoid superficial women. Reading through this thread has re-assured me in my decision.

It sounds like Sarah cares about appearances a LOT, not a little. She's completely avoiding people who have a different taste in style than she does, and I don't think my post alluded to that being okay...

My post was directed less at "Why are women shallow and only like rich guys with yachts and polo shirts and windswept hair" and more at the notion that "People can't look nice AND serve God."

:)

I suppose it's subjective.

But, I think for a certain group of people this rings true. There are people out there who say that they care a little about appearances. And because of the "little bit" of care in appearances they decide to avoid people who don't fit their "type" or "preference." lol Type or preference... yeah that's a nice way to cover the real words that describes them which are shallow, superficial, and sadly in some cases... racist. Yeah people choose others based off race or avoid certain races.

Rachel, my point is that some people do what I said.. avoid certain people and then tell the public that they care about appearances only a little. The truth is... that little bit of care is a huge deal. Again, this applies to them that avoid certain people.

So, Rachel, would you ever consider getting to know an ugly, badly dressed, short, fat, smelly man? Or are you one of those people that cares about appearances... a little?

And if your wondering, no I wouldn't mind and have spoken to women similar to the description above.

Absolutely. This is a lesson I have learned with the homeless. I've been convicted a lot about dealing with people superficially. I used to go to a church where a guy was a few fries short of a happy meal, and you couldn't hardly understand him because he had been shot in the jaw. He didn't bathe, and never changed his clothes. He wore the same clothes everyday I saw him, and you could tell if he had been rained on lately or not per how clean his clothing was. Much of his pant legs should have been a light tan like a cardboard box, but had turned black. Many people at the church avoided him, and one older lady who commented about other people a lot was complaining to me about him smelling. It broke my heart hearing and seeing it, and it convicted me strongly about the way I approached people. One morning in Sunday school it was hard for me to sit next to him because my nose was burning. I made it through, and I confess I was relieved to leave the room, but I still was convicted of my actions and my thoughts. I had had many negative thoughts about his smell and appearance that morning, and God laid it on me. My attitude toward people has been very different since.

God has provided me many opportunities to give people the Gospel, especially the homeless here in Cape because of changing my heart on the matter.

Totally agreed. The shallowness and vanity I find to be too much. I'm glad I'm a loser.

I don't think dressing down makes someone more holy. If a person's heart belongs to Christ, it doesn't matter whether they dress well or not. We can judge a well-dressed person too. I have judged guys who dress well... I've always seen them as charming, rico suave, player types. But God sees their heart. I hope I can too.

Christ's disciples included a couple of rich guys (Joseph of Arimathea and the Pharisee Nicodemus). Just sayin', yo.

Eh.

Tom-a-to.

Tom-ah-to.

Different points of view. I agree to disagree with you, and it's ok.

And yes, I do approach different kinds of people.

But even when I went to the prisons to talk to guys who were in for murder, I chose to wear clean and pressed clothes. When I went with my friends to serve at the soup kitchen, I wore jeans and a t-shirt, but they were neat in appearance. Of course my appearance isn't always grad A, but I do try my best, especially when serving God and other people. Just my own decision and opinion.

By the way, kudos to you for saving yourself for your future wife--most admirable.

Yes, of course I brought up the point of a God-fearing Christian because I'm forward enough to assume that's that Christians are looking for?

I never meant to imply that clothes or appearance were more important than faith or inner character, but merely that how you choose to present yourself can be an extension of your relationship with God.

i believe the answer to that question, is that people are fearful, and worried by things that are only to be faced in this earth, and are doubtful of God supplying or providing for them. It has been widely viewed and accepted in the world, has earned some titles like gold digger, etc. maybe they aren't real Christians, maybe they're confused, who will you choose God or money? that is a difficult question to encounter for them, if confused, if not christian, well i think you'll know the answer.

Genuine modesty should manifest in how a man carries himself and in the clothes he wears, don't you agree? The outer man should reflect the inner man. Modesty can't be faked.

I think one thing to consider is that the question of this thread automatically assumes women are superficial and would always prefer looking for a guy with material means, which isn't true at all.

The wording of the question doesn't allow for the fact that many of the Christian women here (as I said in my first reply to this thread, I've never dated a rich guy, nor ever went after one) already prioritize a man's faith, character, and relationship with God above money.

Sure, there are some superficial people out there, both men and women.

But we also have to give to remember that there are many people out there, again, both men and women, who AREN'T like that, either--by the grace of God, of course.

Can I not have a well-dressed man with class, who enjoys wining and dining, and still have him be a godly man? Yes, you can. And-me-too. So-one for you and one for me. :)

Makes me sad there aren't more of us God-loving, fiscally responsible, Dapper Dons available. :(

I'd advise not to care about looks... not even a bit... to both men and women. I know people have "preferences" about looks (race [which I think is racist], body-type, clothes.. etc etc) but I think people are just making things more difficult for themeselves to add that in. But, most importantly, I think it's not following God's ways....

Yes I should totally just go after women I'm not attracted too constantly. That seems like a good start for a healthy marriage...

You said it's all in there. Like, when you say you'd sit down and talk to a man and get to know him. You refereed to a SPECIFIC guy... a kind of guy your attracted to, NOT ALL GUYS.

Just for clarification, are you saying that all women should be attracted to all guys?

Disclaimer: Excuse me if I'm beating a dead horse here. I only saw the first few posts of this thread then jumped to the last page.

What is this nonsense with a guy wearing "modest" clothing? I'm guessing you mean not wearing nice clothes. If a guy doesn't dress to look nice, how is a girl supposed to tell if he is being humble or if he's just a slob? I'll tell you; there are FAR more guys who are just slobs than there are guys who are purposely dressing-down for Kingdom purposes. I'm not saying go and spend a ton of cash on the high-end threads, but I do know that someone on a budget can still easily make themselves look great by the way he dresses and takes care of himself.

I agree with your statement "The outer man should reflect the inner man". If he's a great guy, he should also look great on the outside.

I don't think this applies to me because I'm not attracted to the guy with money. I would rather have little and be happy then have everything and be unhappy. Maybe that's because we had to be very frugal when I was growing up and we didn't have a lot so I know whats important. People with money and people who think that is important don't impress me, good people with morals and values do. I hear I'm a dying breed but I'm cool with that.

You are truly blessed. Be patient. Remember that patience brings about perfection and completion. James 1:4

I don't think this applies to me, As I don't want to be attracted to a female who is rich. I apprieciate the little things, And Im happy to make do with second hand, third hand even fourth hand. it don't matter to me. I think life can be more happier not being so rich with money. What else a man/woman gain, when he/she has everything?
