Hey Everyone!

We have several threads going that basically all say the same thing: don't look at the outside appearance or what a person has, look for who the person really is and what their relationship with God is like.

We all know "the good Christian answer".

But I'm pretty sure we all struggle with it as well. In what areas do you feel you are fighting your OWN flesh? I'll give you some examples.

Most of the guys who have been attracted to me are:

1. Much older. But to tell you the truth, even ten years older makes me uncomfortable. As I've stated in other posts, when I was 12, I went to a Christian school and there was a Christian teacher with a crush on me (and a few of the other girls as well.) He was about 24. And though I came to no harm, I remember feeling a sense of dread, fear, and shame. I feel the same way around older men who express an interest in me now.

2. I've had several very, very heavy men approach me on the Christian dating sites. NOW PLEASE UNDERSTAND--MOST ALL OF US ARE A LITTLE HEAVY, I KNOW. But when I say "very, very heavy", I mean 350+ pounds and barely able, or not able to walk. I have to admit to feeling a lot of shame over my own shallowness when one wrote, "If you would just look past the weight and see who I really am..."

But I couldn't. And one of the reasons why a healthy lifestyle (NOT just a weight struggle) is important to me is because I've also struggled with eating disorder issues all my life. I know that now that I'm in a much healthier place, being around someone with food issues would pull me into a downward spiral. I also have a friend who dated a man who was differently-abled, and while he was independent at first, she was eventually expected to become his personal nurse. He stopped caring for himself (though he could) and saw her job as having to do everything for him. (NOT THAT EVERYONE WITH THIS CHALLENGE WOULD BE THIS WAY--this is just one example.) This is what I was thinking of when this man wrote about us possibly hitting it off and being together--I was picturing myself caring for his every need... including walking, because he was unable.

PLEASE also understand that I am NOT trying to say older people or heavier people can't or shouldn't be able to find love. I have several other examples as well (men in prison, etc.) but for the sake of time, will limit my own personal story to these two examples. I AM NOT SAYING AT ALL THAT PEOPLE IN SUCH CONDITIONS SHOULD NOT HAVE LOVE OF THEIR OWN.

In fact, my struggle is just the opposite: I find myself asking, "God, am I missing out on someone YOU would choose for me (NOT whom I would choose, but YOU) because of my own inability to see past what they're asking me to look past? Am I failing to be like you and not seeing their heart? Is THIS why I've been single for so long, because I keep looking with my eyes and not my heart? Are YOU calling me to this man... to serve him, even if I'm afraid I could never feel love towards him? Am I thinking only of ME and not having the heart of the HELPMATE you would want me to be?"

I always think of Hosea and Gomer--God called His own prophet to marry a woman he knew would be unfaithful. God does not call us to do what's easiest or happiest, even in marriage. God may be saying that these men do indeed need a wife... and that He is calling me to be one to one of them. And I may be missing the boat completely.

I AM NOT MEANING TO OFFEND ANYONE OUT THERE AND I'M VERY SORRY IF I HAVE HURT ANYONE'S FEELINGS. (My personal thoughts are always that older men should be looking within their own age range for a wife, but that's just my opinion, and that someone who is in a position of needing constant care should seek out a means of at least partial care before expecting a potential date or spouse to do so. BUT, as I said, these are my own limitations and shallowness of thinking--my own fleshly struggles--and I apologize to anyone who may be offended by that.)

THESE ARE MY MOST HONEST STRUGGLES AND QUESTIONS FOR MYSELF.

What are yours?

I would say my key ones are:
Looks (if she isn't at least pretty, I won't pay her much attention and won't bother leading her on)
Weight (I'm a small guy -about 125 lbs - so I would expect my gf to be around there or in good shape)

Height doesn't matter to me (id date a girl who was 6 inches taller than me WiTHOUT shoes haha) and I would date a woman 10-15 yrs older than myself (once I'm in my early to mid 20s).
Race doesn't matter to me either (cant really see myself dating a black girl though, but God might think otherwise)

I've learned to be for the most part accepting of girls no matter who they are or what they look like
But I still have standards like everyone else. It's part of being a person that no one can really avoid :)

Chewbacca--

Thank you so much for your very honest answers. I appreciate that and have nothing but the utmost respect for your willingness to share.

I'd like to add a little disclaimer here and would ask that we all please try to respect each others struggles, limitations, opinions, and points of view.

All of us have preferences... and all of us will be rejected by someone else as a potential romantic partner for various reasons because of these preferences.

I'm hoping to avoid fights involving, "Hey, you don't like short girls--THAT'S SO WRONG!!" etc., etc.

We've all been rejected for something--for me, it's been issues of yes, shortness :), race, being divorced, "not pretty enough", etc. But I try to just tell myself, "Well, if that person doesn't want me for X reason, it just means we're not meant to be... and hopefully I can find someone who is! :)

Rather than criticize each other's preferences and struggles, I'm hoping that we can choose to support each other in acknowledging that we ALL struggle and need God's help to discern what's truly "us" and what is something He wants to change within us.

God bless for your honest answers and for considering other's feelings--thank you in advance. :)

I want her to be able to go snowboarding with me! It is so fun! As long as she can do this, I don't care! LOL

Seriously though, I will be honest in that some fitness would definitely be nice. I like being active and think it would be nice to be able to share the activities. At the same time, I wouldn't say that it is a requirement either.

I have a height thing, I couldn't date a guy shorter than me, I know it is shallow I just come from a tall family and like men being taller than me.

I've always been far more picky about my female friends than I ever was about men, actually (though I'm very glad to be married and not have to worry about that other struggle that you all are facing (and I hope it never comes across like I'm "rubbing it in" that I'm married and you're not, because that would make me a jerk, for starters, and also ya'll are so nice and I've at least been in similar situations before ((which is why I hang out here instead of on the other forums, because...holy moly, I just triple parenthes...sized...ouch)))!!!

^^^Ignore most of that paragraph.

Yeah, I am very hard on my own gender, and it's sometimes extremely hypocritical of me. Obviously I'm not the perfect woman myself, so my...harshness...towards other women is really unfair. This is why I have only ONE close female friend- I have, over time, pushed away all the others because this one was too liberal with her body, or that one wasn't good at listening, or another one didn't get my sense of humor.

It's so easy for me to pick apart another woman's life and see just where she's wrong on things...and I've been trying very hard to stop doing that to the women around me. Because, hello Cristen, you're a walking disaster yourself. Play nice, and play fair!

Though, since I've been spending time here with Christian women, I'm learning to change my opinion of women in general. So thank you ladies, all of you, for that!

Edit: I know that's not quite the shallow hypocrisy you were talking about, but it's what I had available...yep...

Hmm, for me, the first thing is I have to be somewhat attracted to a person that I'm considering being in a relationship with. Now, I don't say this in a he has to be perfect kind of way. I think guys of all shapes and sizes can be attractive and I don't technically have a "type". So, it just depends.

The second thing is, he has to like doing things... not just sitting on the couch doing nothing every day of the year. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like to lounge once in a while, but I like to go out and do things too. So, hopefully we'd like similar activities so we can do them together and experience life and all God has to offer together.

Third thing, I'd have to steal from leelee's post... I'm a tad taller than average for a girl and I'd prefer a guy to not be that much shorter than me. I like to wear heels every now and then and that makes me taller, which feels a tad odd with someone a great deal shorter than me. So, close to my height, at the least, would be okay.

I just realized that I did not really address the question that is the topic of the thread.

Yes. More so in the past than now though. God has grown me much through the years.

In answer to the thread title: no i am not fighting it, maybe that is why I am still single. :)

Forgot like everyone else to answer the thread question

No, because girls don't give me the time of day lol!
I'm open and accepting of most girls, but they seem to think
otherwise about me.. :p at least I've got The Lord to turn to :)

I fight my own flesh in that if I don't think someone is smart I am not attracted to them. This could be simply what words they choose or what accent they have or how tall they are.

I'm shallow in that if someone is struggling with something I am not attracted to them. Either be yourself or become yourself but, the inbetween where you hate yourself, for being fat, out of shape or being a smoker or not reading your Bible enough always trying to find motivation to workout. Nope. I like people for who they are, not who they think they should be. When the struggle is more of a hangup than what they are struggling with, its not someone I want to spend any time with.

I don't see this as shallow hypocrisy, I see it as preference. We all have our preferences, they are different and for various reasons. I know that I will get flack from Christians that will give the answer that it is whats inside that counts. And I do believe that it does, but so does his character and physical attractiveness. Like I had mentioned before that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and we all define it differently.

I do not see it hypocrisy, because at least I am being honest with myself and others, when I say that preferences matter. While others may disagree with me, bring up passages, give Christian answers, atleast I am being authentic, honest with myself and with God. If others see me as shallow, that's their opinion and they have right to express their opinion. But at the end of the day, it won't change the fact that I have preferences.

For a long time I couldn't date anyone with dark hair, and I didn't understand why. I finally put it together that it was because my dad had dark hair, and him leaving the family was by far the hardest loss of my life. However, now that I've figured that out, and God has helped me heal, dark haired men don't bother me. :)

I have preferences in the looks department, but what matters the most to me is who the person is. By leaps and bounds! For instance, I cannot stand people who martyr themselves on a continual basis. Whether it be friendship or romantic, I just can't deal with it. Take responsibility for your life! Ugh, it's irritating. Also, people who are in great amounts of denial... I just can't handle it. Everyone is in denial about something, but what I'm talking about is different. And finally, I don't like the guy I'm with to flirt with other females besides me. It's just... tacky and painful and rude.

Actually, I have an issue with people who flirt for the sake of flirting. But that's my issue, I suppose.

Well, I'm sure there are many traits I look for that may be viewed as shallow, but I wouldn't know at the moment. My biggest fight with my flesh is cutting soul ties to my first and unrequited love/best friend. It's ongoing and much harder than I expected. :(

"In what areas do you feel you are fighting your OWN flesh"?

Good question. The recent related threads about "shallow preferences" have been really thought-provoking. :)

For me, I've long liked to think that I'm not "shallow" and "picky". Physically, I pretty much just get drawn to a friendly, bright looking face, even if the guy's body is far from Hollywood's definition of attractive. Materialistically, I grew up in a family supported by modest incomes, so hard work and diligence has always been a higher priority than a big paycheck. I'd much rather marry a man who'd make a great spiritual leader than try to choose a spouse based on his paycheck.

All of that said, lately there's been something that's been weighing pretty heavily on my heart in relation to "shallow preferences". I have a story that I'll try to keep to a short summary. :)

About a year and a half ago, a godly young man from my Church and circle of good friends expressed interest in possibly entering a relationship with me. I could go on and on about the excellence of this man's character, but I won't, because I said I'm trying to keep this short. ;) Let's just say that despite his youth, he sets an amazing example in his faith and lifestyle. BUT.. yeah there it is. But. There is and has never been a "spark" between us. I do not find him outwardly attractive, and this is from someone who does not subscribe to Hollywood's definition of attractive. Despite this, I know that sometimes a guy's outward appearances have literally grown on me after spending more time with him, so out of genuine admiration for his excellent character and personality, I decided to give him a chance. In my courtship-oriented family, this means sending him along to my dad for a man-to-man chat. My dad ended up recommending that we not enter into a relationship, for multiple reasons, one of them being that he believes compatibility is important in many areas of life, not just spirituality, and he pretty much only saw spiritual compatibility between the two of us. Odd as this sounds, I was almost upset that I didn't find this guy attractive. I can't emphasize enough how wonderful of a person he is, and yet I wasn't attracted to him. I even questioned my own godliness, and wondered if my priorities were all out of whack and if I was a horribly shallow and selfish person. Though we never entered into a relationship, I still kept my mind open to the the possibility, because I admired him as a person that much and I was almost hoping that maybe over time something would change on my end. I also noticed that for a whole year he showed me the slightest bit of special treatment, almost as if he was trying to remain on my radar.

Now, I'm so grateful for my dad's wisdom. A few months ago my now-boyfriend began pursuing me. He's also a tremendously wonderful person of excellent character, but we share compatibility in nearly every area of our lives, and there is definitely a "spark"! By worldly standards he's just "cute" but in my eyes he's drop-dead-gorgeous. xD
The only uncomfortable part of all of this is knowing that guy #1, who is part of my small circle of close friends, got a pretty good view of how quickly things unfolded between myself and guy #2/boyfriend. The timeline was somewhat awkward. Guy #1 gave me a very well thought out birthday gift, then just over a month later I was in an exclusive relationship with guy #2. True to his character, he never whined about it or ever made me feel like I had wronged him or led him on. Despite all my happiness now, sometimes I do still feel like a horrible person regarding the way I dealt with guy#1. I feel like maybe I unintentionally did lead him on through "keeping my mind open" to the possibility of dating him, even though this was out of a genuine desire to give a worthy man a chance.
I simultaneously feel like I did the right thing and the wrong thing. *bangs head on desk*

Was I shallow in my perception of guy#1? Did I give in to fleshly preferences? *sigh* sometimes I don't know what to think. All I know is I'm extremely happy with my boyfriend, but I sincerely pray that God sends a good woman into the life of guy#1.. someone who does find him attractive, according to her personal tastes and the way God wired her. She will be a very blessed woman, that's for sure.

I don't see personal preferences/what we are attracted to as hypocrisy. I don't have a problem with getting to know someone no matter their hair/eye color, height, intelligence, weight, etc.; but whether I am attracted to them is not really something I control. I either am or I'm not.

I tend to be attracted to these guys:
- darker hair (I have no idea why)
- attentive eyes
- intelligent sense of humor
- a great laugh
- compassion
- have an interest in health and fitness
- have an interest in music
- have an interest in what's going on in the world around them
- enjoy discussing the things of God and living it out

I hope none of that is shallow :)
