i shouldn't have said this. it should left to right, and multiplying before dividing.
that means you do
8/2(2+2)

8/2(4)

which is
8/2*4

do multiplication first
8/8 = 1

there's not "2 right answers" -- multiplication comes before division, so the answer is 1.
PEMDAS

You gotta be kidding if you think it is 1.

But then again, I've seen how you divide the word.

8/2(2+2)

Eight divided by two multiplied by 4 is 16.

Let me guess E=mc[SUP]2[/SUP] is E = mass times the speed of light squared?

You're supposed to do the math in the parenthesis first, then the rest.

4/2/2(2+2)
becomes 2/8
not 1(4)

I always hated those order of operation equations.

If there is a real world reason why to write an equation then you should put parenthesis around the parts you are trying to multiply and divide by to avoid confusion. imo.

If the graphing calculators don't even agree with each other I would say there is a major problem.

I never understood the point of all the repetition. If you can solve 1 long division problem then you could solve a million of them. So what's the point in having to solve an entire page?

I just got into some sort of argument with someone on Facebook because my answer to this statement:

Is 16.
And hers is 1.

What do you think?
It actually uses the division symbol instead of the slash, so we shouldn't confuse what is above or below the fraction. My phone isn't going to let me illustrate this, so I will use words. Order of operations, we do inside parenthesis first. 2 plus 2 is 4.

That leaves us with

8 divided by 2 times 4

The confusion is created because we can't decide whether to divide first or multiply first, but they are in fact the same operation.

Dividing by 2 can be rewritten as multiplying by 1/2, which is multiplying by 0.5

8 times 0.5 times 4

Now it doesn't matter which one you do first.

(8 times 0.5) times 4 is 16

8 times (0.5 times 4) is 16

8 divided by (2 times 4) is 1, but you have to impose parenthesis into the equation that were not first present.

The correct answer is 16 without a doubt, but it can be easy to make a mistake that looks like the right thing to do.

The easiest way to solve simple math problems it to buy one of these fancy calculators.

I would rather have my fingernails pulled out with pliers than to do math

My brain seizes up when it sees math problems. And starts crying.

I was going to select 'cookies', but I decided to take a deep breath and try to look at the problem anyway. You're right, it's 16. And then I was sad that the poll wasn't multiple choice, because I also wanted the answer to be 9 billion cookies.

You do what is in the parenthesis first.
8/2(4)
But now the parenthesis is to be treated just like a multiplications sign.
8/2x4
You do this from left to right, so the answer is 16.
Many people get confused with the parenthesis, but on pemdas, it is just what is within parenthesis first.

The square of his weight, multiplied by his height, plus eight
