Now that Im only working part time Im going to get a juicer and start juicing.
I heard cabbage, carrots and celery is a great juice drink. Although, I would probably throw in an apple for flavor.
Cabbage juice is supposed to be good for ulcers, acidity, arthritis, and healthy colon.
Juicing allows you to get all the enzymes and vitamins that heating destroys. You can use the fiber in soups or baked products later.
I had a juicer but hated the clean up because I was working full time, but now I have the time. If anyone is like me and doesn't get all the vegetables they should, juicing provides an alternate way to get them.
Anybody else juicing their vegetables?

I do not have a juicer... however, my friend does and juices her carrots every day. She says she can tell a difference when she doesn't drink her carrot juice. I usually buy it over the counter although I think doing it at home with your own juicer would be great. I remember she told me she did watercress too. I can't remember though. I guess the end result is a bunch of pulp, maybe you could do a soup or something with that.

I like carrots, apples and ginger. The ginger really warms you up on a cold day.

Oh, I really need to put some ginger in, its good for stomach problems.
If you buy juice at the store it is pasteurized in the cartons or cans. You miss the enzymes. I like cucumber and tomato and it makes my skin feel sooooo good.
You really can tell the difference in your body when you juice and when you don't. I hate greens so if you hate them, you can just drink them mixed with other vegies juiced. They say no more than 1/4 of your glass should be greens. That's about all I could handle anyway.

Here are some recipes and it tells what they might be good for.

A cheap juicer is good but the pulp is quite wet. I would still use the Hamilton Beach juicer because it is cheaper and if you want to you can use the pulp later in things or you can run it through the juicer again. I never tried running it through the juicer twice when I juiced before. This time Im going to get the one that will take the whole fruit, although with apples take the seeds out, they can contain bad stuff.

You will love the ginger...I use it in cooking as well....my favorite is egg drop soup with ginger simmered in the stock.

My grandmother taught me not to waste what the Lord provides me with, I have been trying to train myself to throw things away ever since, but when I do I apologize to her.

Throwing away all the wonderful fiber from juiced fruits and vegetables had my days spent explaining to her. I got rid of the juicer, instead, and bought a vitamix blender. It makes wonderful smoothies, pulverizes everything.

The Vitamix is good but too pricey for me here so I bought the Big Mouth HamiltonBeach Juicer. I understand your thoughts on wasting the fiber though.

I have a Bullet for smoothies if I want to make them. I did that for awhile, but I would only use fruit, so again,,,,,no vegies.

Today I had turnip, carrot, lettuce, apple for juice. The turnip was a little weird in it but the carrot and apple helped to disguise it. I wouldn't normally use turnip in the juicer but it was in the fridge and wouldn't have lasted too much longer. At least my vegetables won't go in the garbage, just the pulp will. The carrots weren't all that fresh but at least they didn't get to the garbage either. I was throwing too many vegetables out before.

Today I got beets, parsley, cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, more carrots and still have some apples in the fridge.

For me juicing is a real positive because I haven't been eating these things regularly and then they get thrown in the garbage or I stop buying them altogether. Tomorrow Im going to use up some celery. It is supposed to be good for nervousness.

Beets (liver cleanser) and apple is good. Tomato and cucumber is great for the skin on face and hands.

My juices I make do not seem to taste good.
I make them in blender. Or did/have. (about 3 times or so) :)

Oranges dont blend well.
Also added wheat grass.

Pineapple and coconut milk goes down well.

Like a non alcoholic pina colada kinda.

Never tried vegetable or sallad juices.

Smoothies are nice also.
One must plan ingredients perhaps.

I loved a coffee banana smoothy at cafe but tried make one myself turned out awful.

Strange that.
How difficult can it be?
Banana, coffee and milk.....

At cafe cost $8 so be good if it tasted well ala home made styling...

Yoghurt and honey and musli and banana in blender.

Acacai is said to be healthy and do wonders and i tried it at cafe a few times as with a musli.
This cost around $11 .

Isaria, if you use a juicer and juice vegetables you could always add apples to any vegetables to improve the taste. The juicer can do fruit or vegetables, but generally I just do vegetables and apples in the juicer.
So I mainly just drink my vegetables and eat my fruit.

In a previous post I gave a link to juicing for health. Its pretty good and you may find some juice recipes that taste better.

I don't always like the taste of the vegetable drinks, but with the apples it helps, and I drink it anyway for energy and health. Cooking destroys the enzymes and much of the vitamin content.

I think you need a juicer, not a blender, to make juice, otherwise its a smoothie.

It is so easy to get your quota of vegetables when you juice them. This morning I had apple, cabbage, parsley, cucumber, carrots and celery for juice.

In the afternoons often there is a slump in energy, so Im going to have a juice "snack" of tomato, cucumber, apple and celery at 3 pm. Love Saturdays.

Like Trisha said, with my being too scotch to throw our the fiber, all my juices are smoothies.

I found two wonderful additions. We need protein. In our modern world, we often take the bones out of meat before we cook them so we don't get the gelatin we used to get. We need to add it, now. I add it to my smoothies. There are few calories and lots of protein.

I also found that flaked coconut is a wonderful addition. I keep a coffee grinder on the counter top and use it for flax seed to add, too.

That sounds great Red, I like the idea of the coffee grinder. Gelatin is a good protein additive too, if someone isn't getting enough. I may invest in a coffee grinder at some point. Im a tea drinker so never had a use for it, but I think it can make peanut butter, can it? Grinding your flax seed is a good use for it.

Yesterday afternoon I juiced a couple of beets, apple, celery, cucumber and tomato. If people are juicing beets don't be alarmed if your urine is a slightly different color...lol

Got some bananas so will probably make a chocolate, peanut butter, banana smoothie in the Bullet later.

Its really good to start the morning off with fresh fruit juice. I didn't this morning, but I used to use two oranges and an apple.

This is good to remember: You are what you eat is WRONG. You are what you ABSORB is RIGHT. Juicing makes the nutrients most available to the body. The cells of the food are broken open more completely than any other method of preparation.

Pulp which otherwise would go to waste makes great compost.

But Mooky, God didn't create it for compost, God created it as food, like fiber we need. It helped me that Trisha said juice made it easier to absorb. Good argument, I told Grandma.

I started juicing because I wasn't eating the things I should, so pulp in the garbage or not, Im still healthier than I would have been.
I really went overboard this morning. Juiced a couple of oranges, an apple, celery and then wanted a smoothie so put a banana and the juice in my magic bullet. It was delicious. It was breakfast.
This afternoon I will juice beets, celery and any other vegetable in the fridge. It is easy and easy clean up. I put a glass under the spout to catch the juice so I can put that with the dishes and line the pulp container with a bag. The rest is easy to clean. The juicer came with a brush to clean the strainer basket. Simple. I never ate (drank) so well. :D

i'm excited about juicing too! santa brought me the only thing i wished for, a slow, masticating juicer, and i can hardly wait start using it. i'm also one of those who mostly juices greens and veggies, and eats my fruit. i also like to add a granny smith apple to liven things up. i'd like to read more of the recipes you refer to.

ok, not to start anything, but i just wanted to share that if you really do want/need protein, gelatin is a very poor source of protein. it is an incomplete protein that supplies none of the essential amino acids, and since it is comprised of collagen, it isn't easy to assimilate. in fact, the aminos that it does supply are the very ones that our body is capable of manufacturing on it's own. the jury is still out as to whether it has value in helping with arthritis.

if you really want some protein to add to a smoothie, i would recommend 100% whey powder (not sweet whey), as whey isolate (not concentrate). it's easy to assimilate, a complete protein, is lactose-free and has no real flavor. i use it often in smoothies and even bake with it. i highly recommend it.

How interesting!! My information said that because we used to purchase meat with the bone in, we always had bone marrow, or gelatin before. Meat is usually sold without the bone, now. Now we need to replace it, and that sounded reasonable to me. I bought gelatin, not knowing what you add about it!

There are so many brands of whey protein, and also protein powder from mixed sources. Do you know how to choose the best one?

i'm glad to share. whey protein is a major staple in my house since i usually can't seem to eat enough protein for what my body requires, and it is so much easier for me to add a smoothie. also, i make my own recipe of protein rich "cookies" that are sweetened with stevia and xylitol, and the whey protein blends beautifully into just about any baked recipe i've tried it with.

as to brands or choices, i really have no loyalty to any of them. in fact, i usually purchase whatever is cheapest and ideally, organic. my local health food store sells it in bulk and for me, that's usually the cheapest option. i would recommend that you try your health food store's bulk aisle, as unflavored whey isolate is pretty much the same no matter who supplies it.

also, do make sure that it's whey protein isolate, not concentrate, as isolate is the preferred form of protein.

as to the value of meat bones, i have no doubt it has value, perhaps even more than the gelatin might offer.

hope that helps. :)

tell your grandma that what is lost in fiber to you could help to make yummy and nutritious dog treats, such as the ones i make for my sweet girl, chloe. :)
