It amazes me how many "Christians" believe divorce was the unforgivable sin. Imagine if this was true! King David committed adultery with a married woman (Bathsheba) and yet he was forgiven! How can divorcing your own spouse be worse than having sex with somebody else's spouse?

Of course I am not condoning divorce. It has serious consequences for your family. It definitely is a sin and God hates it (Malachi 2:16). If you are unhappy with your spouse, then ask God for help.

This was my reverence for today.

God bless you all

The Bible only identifies one unforgiveable sin, and it isn't divorce. However, divorced people are often shunned by church people for unknown reasons, as though divorce is contagious. What many don't understand is that a divorced person may not have chosen divorce, but may have had it handed to them.

Also common in churches is the belief that there is no legitimate reason for initiating a divorce, when Scripture gives more than one.

I can respect the choice of a non-divorced single not to marry (or even date) a divorced person, but there is no reason to treat a divorced person as any worse a sinner than oneself.

I've also never met anyone who thought divorce was the unforgivable sin. In nearly 30 years of being a Christian.

I agree..God never created the marriagel covenant with divorce in mind..it was the hardening of mens hearts and only under 1 recourse that He allowed it...its our job to ask God to forgive us of our part in divorce (and both are responsible and accountable to God) .God forgives a repentant heart but theres always consiquences of a broken covinant. Btw..God doesnt "rate" sins..a lie is just as bad as murder to God...

there have been threads in this forum, if I remember right, started by those of the Catholic persuasion, that have said that if you are divorced and remarried, you must divorce your current spouse because God will not forgive you getting married again if you have been divorced

quite the domino effect

Hmmm..im not catholic but i heard that if divorcing you have to get an annulment and PROVE you have grounds for divorce and the priesr can tell you if you can get that annullment or not..of course theres ways around it..but if divorced without thier permission you cant marry in any catholic church again..

i've seen people who maybe act like this is their view - though it's not a view they would say they hold.

I was told I could no longer be a member of a church I belonged to because my wife filed for a no fault divorce the pastor said that divorce is the same as adultery and they don't allow adulterers in their church either.

Well I got over it but their favorite TV evangalist was Jimmy Swagart which caused a scandal that rocked the Assembly of God and caused quite a mess.
By the way there was no adultery, my ex was bipolar and I was totaly way over my head. I didn't understand mental illness at all.

Well that was over 30 years ago. I don't know what she did, med wise. She worked as a psych-tech and later became a nurse in a state hospital. She sent me the kids and got remarried about 20 years ago. Now she's retired. She has gotten her life on track, kind of and I don't bear her any ill will. I only wish her the best and don't get involved in her life, at all.

And now I understand volumes about mental illness. It' stil not enough.

Well what happened, happened a long time ago. I guess I'm about as happy as I can expect to be. Nothing to jump for joy about but I'm not depressed, not in a measurble way at least. Thanks for asking.

Right, the unpardonable sin is not divorce for it is a sin according to the flesh between people.

Jesus said a person can blaspheme against the Son, the man Christ Jesus, and be forgiven, for it is a sin against the flesh, but cannot blaspheme against the Spirit and be forgiven.

Which the Pharisees blasphemed against the Spirit, when they said Jesus cast out devils by Beelzebub, so they said He had an unclean spirit, when He has a clean spirit, the Holy Spirit.

Which Paul persecuted the Church but he did not blaspheme against God, but went against the man Christ Jesus, the flesh, not believing He was of God, until the revelation of Jesus to him then he believed in Jesus.

The unpardonable sin is attributing evil to God when He is good.

Anything that is a sin against people can be forgiven, but a person cannot sin against God by attributing evil to Him when He is good.

But that would be about a continuation in sin, not about unforgivability of it.

And if you are living in a new (invalid) marriage, you are not allowed to come to eucharist, I think. You are considered unrepentant.
