Why? What are your reasons? War is nothing new. Genocide and persecution on minorities has been happening all over the globe. War crimes are terrible as thousands die but war also could mean millions die. To bluff nuclear threats is a big gamble that could mean billions die. Are you saying this to prevent a Europe invasion? We are not yet at the reality of that happening. Are you worried about if we don't go to war, then Tiawan may be next? Who knows, but is it worth the death toll of WW3?

I'm not against war or against justice. But I also weigh other variables like thousands of deaths is bad but millions is worse.

We should do all we can to try and protect innocent life and sometimes that is a hard decision because entering a war means you are now putting innocent life into harms way.

It never should be something to rush into in less you have no other choices.

Why add another disaster to the list of the USA's military misadventures? Apart from Grenada and Panama (not exactly big league), recent US military endeavors have gone badly. And who watches China while the US is tied up in Europe? China is a far bigger threat than Russia.

I was wondering how we would feel if we were a patriarch of a family, that is hearing missiles and bombs fall around where his wife and children are cowering in a hopefully secure cellar or the like. I think sometimes we use our rationality to hide our cowardice!

Not sure that it's America's responsibility. I would have thought it was more the EU's responsibility since Ukraine is one of their good neighbours, apparently. They should have offered Ukraine all forms of military support including boots on the ground in January, if not sooner, when it appeared probable that Russia would attack. That probably would have been the deterrent that would have caused Putin to back off. Having said that, Zalensky may not have accepted the offer of such help, as he kept on saying that he thought Russia wouldn't attack and pleaded with the world not to hype up the prospect of war.

So, are you enlisting in the military or is your behind planted in your computer chair? When you say that we need to stop the Russians, whose sons and daughters are you speaking of sending into a war zone?

Interesting question, that. It will be fascinating to see what the answer is.

Feelings are not always rational. For example,

260px-Gunnery_Sergeant_Ryan_P_Shane_shot_while_trying_to_rescue_wounded_Marine_in_Fallujah.jpg

The emotions portrayed in this image is raw and relational but not so much rational. This image is now used in many training exercises to get this point across. You can not help someone if you are dead yourself.

This was a lesson they taught us in fire science technology (fire fighting training) in many cases the fire department will do all they can to suppress or control the damage of a house fire but if it can not be extinguished and the risk is not worth the life of the fire fighter, they will fight the fire from the outside and simply protect the other houses around it. This is in my opinion the strategy we need right now in Europe.

How many families have been saved by outside efforts to get the across the border? By weapons we have supplied them? By our special operation forces who helped prepare them for this invasion the last 8 or 10 years? Could more be done? Of course, but it should also be well calculated.

The reason America cares is due to the geopolitical landscape, NATO alliance, global economy, domestic economy, human rights abuse, war crimes, weapons of mass destruction, the actions of other US enemies if this event isn't handled with strength, and currently the popular opinion of the US population is they do not want to jump into another decades long war with 1000s of our kids dead.

There are a lot of variables and unfortunately any day could change the the rally cry of the nation. By the end of the day, a new event, could easily set in motion the cry for war. (The day of infamy)

As long as the US is in NATO, it is responsible for the mutual protection of the US and of Europe, along with all of the toher members.
Sine the US and European nations of NATO have met to determine what they are going to do, I would think all are following the decisions mad during that summit. You tell me, but please do some research first.

Well, you may be right in respect of trying to resolve the conflict from the outside, it seems the only option left for the Western European nations now given that 'the horse has bolted' on them. Unless Putin decides to use WMDs or the West can't stomach the atrocities any more and they give Russia an ultimatum to withdraw their troops, the war will grind on and Ukraine's people will continue to be slaughtered. I personally couldn't stand by and let a friendly neighbour suffer at the hand of a heartless thug and bully.

I think you missed a salient point I implied, and that is I feel it is an EU (not NATO or Ametica's) responsibility. Putin all along has quoted his concern about what he perceives as NATO's eastward advance, so leave them out of the negotiating equation. I have already done a fair amount of research on Ukraine and Russia's relatiinship. I'm prepared to stand by my conclusions.

Putin is in charge of the military and would have no qualms in utilizing his nuclear arsenal. The US military will not go to war with either China or Russia because of the massive amount of nuclear weapons. Ukraine is not worth the destruction of the USA.

Members of NATO must be of one accord. That is my salient point.

You may be right, but I'm wondering if when push came to shove, there would be people in Russia that would stymie any attempt by Putin to launch a nuclear attack, given their own survival would be at stake. Putin might be willing to give up his own life for his ideals, but I doubt if the oligarchs and Generals would be willing to give up their lives for Putin's ideals!

Yes, that's true. Which is why I am leaving them out of my comments. I wouldn't have embroiled NATO in the negotiations, but the EU, yes. Not all members of the EU are members of NATO, they are free to exercise their own moral actions external to NATO....EU States could have banded together to offer military support to Ukraine, including putting aircraft in the sky and boots on the ground.

Biden is using Jimmy Carter's playbook.

Meaning this is not going to resolve until America gets a strong leader.

First off Biden and Trump both should have STRONGLY encouraged Ukraine to allow Crimea water from the main river instead of damming it and draining it off. Crimea is undergoing water shortages for their farms because of Ukraine.
(One of those things you don't hear) granted Russia took Crimea and there's a scorched earth policy about confiscated land...but it's kinda a wash too.

But there are other ways to handle things other than war. You can't corner wild animals...they will fight unreasonably.

Poland, Hungary, Czeck Republic, and Slovakia and many other countries all have a say in this...moreso than the USA does. They can actually do more to stop the aggression than the USA can...it's their neighborhood.

And where Ukraine is being labeled as racist...that's true as most former Soviet block nations are racist against Russians. They never had enough Jews to ever be truly racist about people they don't know. The Nazi charge is ridiculous.

Ukraine is highly educated. Lots of scientists of many disciplines live there. Including biological chemistry...but that doesn't mean that they are engineering biological warfare munitions....they are highly capable of engineering rocket motors. They also have computer processing chip manufacturing going on there. As well as a large amount of farming. (Until the invasion...now fields are not getting planted,)

But Russia will conscript any Ukrainians that they don't kill. Basically paying them poverty wages for mandatory work. Slavery!

Russian economy is in huge trouble...oil is bought as a last resort of other supplies available and charged a premium for any currency other than Euros.

It's not over...Russia is starving for groceries. Not much is left of their economy. War is not an option.

The USA has become an exporter of natural gas once again in the form of LNG.
Because Europe needs it.

So...if we become too much of a problem for Putin...destruction of the USA makes sense...he loses a business competitor and a war rival in one fell swoop. Not to mention everyone else will be fearful of what comes next.
