1. The English word “tithe” as well as its Hebrew-Greek equivalents “ma`aser”
and “apodekatoo” means a tenth.

2. Many Christian churches preach tithing as a means of supporting the
work of the Lord today. There are many variations of this theme. Some
pay the local church one tenth of their income after taxes and bills are paid;
some pay before.

Others demand tithing on unemployment, inheritance, gifts, tax refunds,
social security and even gambling winnings. The tithing issue has caused
a great deal of strife and division in our churches over the years.

3. The most well known passage on tithing comes from the Old
Testament book of Malachi 3:7-10. This Scripture has given rise to the
practice of “Storehouse Tithing.” Simply stated, the congregation is
exhorted from the pulpit to channel all of their Christian giving
through the local church (storehouse).

If they wish to give to a Christian organization, radio or television broadcast,
etc., it must go through their denominational machinery in order for the local
church to get “credit.” Also the pastor and elders often must make the
determination if the cause supported by the giver is “worthy.”...

All I know is that God didn't send out beggars. If you are teaching God's word chapter by chapter and verse by verse, the sheep will support your ministry as they are getting fed quite well. If you have to beg for donations, it seems God isn't blessing your ministry. Rev 2 &3 mentions seven churches. The Lord finds fault with five of them and only approves of two. Teach what Smyrna and Philadelphia taught.

All I know for sure is God loves a cheerful giver, that giving a portion to the One who give us everything in the first place is a practical, reasonable and an edifying way to put Him and His on the receiving end for a change.

I believe He designed us in His image, to give what we have, to share..

Yes, I believe it pleases Him to give back selflessly, not because we have to, or should, but because loving others with all our resources, in all ways, best as we are able, is the desire of our hearts.

Giving, WISELY not without discernment, is a priviledge and we should feel honored to do so.

I usually disagree with the posts by the OP, but I took the time to read through the linked article (the first part, relevant to this thread) and it is spot-on.

The quote from Malachi is not a doctrinal verse- it is a charge against the priests for taking more than their share of the tithe, if fact, they took it before it would go to the place where food was stored. They were literally taking the best food and serving God defective animals.

Church marketing experts urge pastors to earn up to 60% of the tithe that teach their churches to give. (This nearly always shown as the first line item of church tithe distribution.) If there are 50 tithers who tithe on $30,000 income, the pastor would make $150,000. (Just food for thought)

When there is a temple with Levitical priests, there is a tithe.
