Jesus is called a "malefactor"

"Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:"

In this passage, the Jewish leaders told Pilate that Jesus was a "malefactor" (evildoer in the NKJV). Malefactor or evildoer meant "criminal" in that day.

That tells me that the leaders held Jesus in such contempt that they thought of Him not merely as a false prophet, but also as a criminal. To be honest, I don't know if they were trying to impress Pilate by saying that Jesus was a criminal or if they actually felt that way about Him.

It's one thing to call Jesus a false prophet (which is bad enough as it is, because He is the Son of God and is God Himself). But it's an entirely new low to call Him a "criminal". Which also ties into what Jesus said about the world hating Him first. And that we should not be surprised if the world hates us.

Just my thoughts :cool:

It shows their utter contempt for Jesus who they could not handle the thought of being their Messiah. They wanted a pompous, regal, warrior king to represent them and take over, not a gentle, peace loving 'do-gooder' so to speak.

They heard Him but they did not understand Him. They were hypocrites, nothing more, nothing less. Let us continue in His Word, hearing and understanding.

And they accused Him of demonic possession. Dear God. I do not want to be them.

Calling Jesus a prophet is not wrong in any way, though it does as you say leave off greater parts of Who He is.

Jesus alluded to Himself as a prophet (Mark 6:4), and was clearly the prophet
promised through Moses in Deuteronomy 18:15, 17-19 and also Deut 34:10.

The Jewish people were awaiting this prophet and thought it might be John the Baptist.

But John the Baptists pointed to Jesus Christ, and many accepted this (John 6:14).

Acts 3:22-23 also identifies Jesus as a prophet .:D

Oh yes calling Him a false prophet is very wrong...

whenever I read what happened at the crucifixtion, its so wrong what they did to Jesus it just makes me cry, however good news is that He has overcome

People are horrible, they beat him up, mocked him, spat at him, stripped him naked, cast lots for his clothes, tried to get him drunk and poison him, got him to carry his own cross. Most of his so called friends deserted him in his hour of need, and he was betrayed by the one who was closest to him. He was accused of all sorts of things he didnt do and the things he did do people tried to make out like he was evil. Plus the pharisees tried to run him of a cliff, that was just scary. The pharisees seemed a bit like the religious mafia or nazis to me. Totally corrupt. Pilate was a puppet of the roman empire. And not to mention what they did to Jesus cousin John the baptist. Jesus must have been aboslutely devasted that they beheaded his right hand man and he couldnt do anything about it.

I think there was mention that Salome came to Jesus after she put Johns head on a platter...Im sure her name was mentioned afterward as one of his followers. I dont know if Jesus forgave her though or if she repented.

If they called Him a criminal it was probably to increase the chances that the Romans would put Him to death. Pilate said he found no fault in Jesus; but when the Jews said He claimed to be a king, and anyone who claims to be a kings is against Caesar, he relented and had Him crucified.
