    ..and also (while I'm on 'type' teaching), worth pointing out that Moses represents the Law, and Joshua (who took over from Moses) represents Christ (after all, 'Jesus' is the Greek form for 'Joshua'). So, just as the Law will not get you salvation, Moses did not get them to the promised land...

    Correct. A harsh penalty for a small crime? I think a big part of the incident was that he spoiled the 'type'. The rock is a type (a picture) of Christ, and God only commanded the rock be struck the first time (a picture of the crucifixion, which can only happen once), and to wave his staff over...
