Ok, this is about tongues again.
This question is for tongue speakers, tho, so maybe not so contentious.

I speak in tongues a little hear and there. God has really had me glued to His Word these last two years as foremost of anything at all in my life. The tongues only comes out sometimes when I am praying for somebody, or occasionally in praise and worship at church.

Anytime I try to do anything different spending time with Him, He directs me back to reading instead.

I guess I was curious about how much you all speak in tongues, and what is the extent of it. Meaning lots of words, or not so much. I only have a few phrases that come out.

The more you speak in tongues - the more "fluent" you become , for lack of a better word. As you in faith continue to speak it will become as natural to pray in tongues as it is to breath. When I first started to pray in tongues I would just say a few words and then I just continued to speak more and longer until I can if I want pray in tongues for hours.

It's important to remember that we are speaking mysteries to our Father and Lord. We are giving thanks and praising God. We are building ourselves up. We are praying for others in the body of Christ and the best part is that it by-passes the mind as our natural mind doesn't know what to pray about as we should.

You can as an act of your will sit down and pray with your mind for 1/2 hour or any time amount. You can do the same with your spirit. The more you pray in tongues they more flowing and natural it will become just like speaking with our natural languages does.

It's a great blessing from the Lord so keep at it and you will be strengthened in the Lord. You can sing just as easily I the spirit as you can pray too. Soon, it will as natural for you to sing and pray in the spirit as it is to breath. I speak in tongues so much that sometimes I don't even realize that I am praying in tongues because it just flows out like a river.

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 (NASB)
[SUP]14 [/SUP] For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
[SUP]15 [/SUP] What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and Iwill pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.

I pray in tongues a lot, every day, but didn't have anything for a year after I was baptized in the Spirit, and then it was only a couple of words. But I used them and it grew from there. Like a child learning to talk.

I have once I think, like I knew what I was saying in my head but the words were coming out all weird. I don't know if it was or not but I just assumed it was

Why would I seek to pray in a different language than I already speak? If it's a blessing from the Lord, why wouldn't all believers be praying and speaking in different tongues? Just curious...

Therefore what should you do, brothers? Whenever you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. All things must be done for edification.
(1Co 14:26)

We speak in tongues because the Holy Spirit gives us the enablement ( Acts 2:4 ). Speaking in tongues does many things which I have outlined in post#2. Here it is again below:

It's important to remember that we are speaking mysteries to our Father and Lord. ( 1 Cor 14:2 ) We are giving thanks and praising God.( 1 Cor 14:16-17) We are building ourselves up.( 1 Cor 14:4 Jude 20 ) We are praying for others in the body of Christ and the best part is that it by-passes the mind as our natural mind doesn't know what to pray about as we should. ( 1 Cor. 14:14 )

As far as why don't all believers speak in tongues. - it could be for a number of reasons. but I think the #1 is that they are unlearned in this area because they have not heard about it or they have been taught it is not for today and thus it stops people from wanting to learn about it.

I believe that this thread's OP was meant for people that do speak in tongues to share their experiences. The question of whether to speak or not to speak can be for another thread as I'm sure there are lot's of them in CC now....:)

So do you who claim to speak in tongues speak in languages or in ecstatic utterances? When you pray in tongues do you pray in languages or in ecstatic utterances?

Roger let's keep those questions for another thread. The OP's thread has a different purpose.

You hit it right on! It is not about when you try - it is when you feel passionate about either praying for someone or caught up in praising that somehow you lose the English words to continue praying/praising. The Holy Spirit takes over at those times, and you can continue allowing his intercession to be lined up with the will of God or allowing praise to flow as a river. Indeed it does.

Please do not be discouraged by those who have not had these experiences. For those of us who have, it is priceless and as scripture even points out, it can be edifying to those who use this gift. It has been the most edifying thing in my life in either intercession or praise. It is totally the Holy Spirit taking over.

I would only admonish those who have not had this experience not to discourage those who do or to begin an analysis of particulars. After all, it is scriptural and even Paul wrote that not all do pray in tongues (although he wished they did). We all are at various places in our lives, and I was raised a Baptist (a total no no on tongues)...yet thanks to His amazing grace, he taught me that there WAS AND COULD BE MORE.

I also want to tell those who don't - that doesn't mean that you aren't filled with the Spirit. It just means that you have not been led into this dimension of praying or praising. Paul in his letters recognized this.

So the premise cannot be established and therefore it must continue without examination? What does that say about the merits of the case?

I understand the predicament you are placed in since few if any can say that they speak in a language other than their own so one can assume that they are speaking in ecstatic utterances. They are embarrassed to make that statement in public yet somehow they feel it is impressive to God.

So now you say don't shine the light into this thread just let us go on in darkness. The do not disturb sign is out.

If you believe something you should be able to defend it from the bible.

It is a God thing. Surely you have read the N.T. And anything of the Holy Spirit is difficult to explain. It is something only to be experienced. But why do you try to discourage Roger? For those of us who are given this grace, why not just let us enjoy it? What is your purpose?

It's very simple. I have read the NT and I cannot find anything that resembles what those in the Pentecostal or Charismatic movement claim to be God produced tongues.

If we are good stewards of Gods word ought we not to endeavor to correct error?

When you pray for others in tongues and ask for more you get more and different tongues. If you focus on what you're praying for, pray both with your mind and your spirit, you all of a sudden can get a new tongue or more words. I always asked for more because I thought otherwise He can't perfectly pray God's will for people through me.

...I have read the NT

Try opening your eyes, mind and spirit when reading the Scriptures, it helps!

Stop playing your old scratched and worn out 33rpm record at 78rpm! :p
