Hey Everyone!

I'd been thinking about this topic for a while, but Lynx solidified it by greeting our keep-in-touch group with a morning greeting that said, "Hooray For Cheating!" and, "Cheetahs Never Win" -- so I have to give him full credit for this title!

How about you? Are YOU a Cheetah?!

In other words... When you read a book, hear about a movie, play a game, work on a crossword puzzle, play trivia, hear a joke, etc. -- do you always play "fair and square", watching or working out the ending without a single spoiler or cheat code, or do you go fishing for answers from everyone's favorite digital family member, Brother Google?!

I have to admit that I have learned a very uncomfortable truth about myself -- when it comes to entertainment, I am definitely a cheetah.

I just recently got back into reading novels (I'm always reading something, but it's usually short things like articles I can digest quickly in between other tasks,) but I've just recently gotten back into reading entire stories.

And as with most entertainment... I find myself cheating. I don't really watch movies or TV, but in order to be able to talk to people, I do read or listen to summaries of things I hear people talking about. I don't watch horror movies but many seem to have interesting plot points that I promptly look up on Wikipedia. I don't play video games, but if enjoying watching someone utilize a good cheat code for a game in a YouTube video is a crime, then I deserve to be locked up!

And for some reason, I can find plenty of spoilers to pretty much any other form of entertainment, but unfortunately, haven't had much luck finding "cheat codes" to plot points in the books I've been reading! (I'm not subscribed to Reddit or any of the social forums I'm sure are brimming with spoilers -- so all I seem to find are review sites with copies of everything already printed on the jacket of the book.)

I know such actions might upset any purists, but I like being able to take in a vast amount of what's going on in pop culture in very little time and without things like gratuitous nudes scenes and whatever else.

In my own Christian walk, I've found that knowing a plot point here and there opens doors for me to form interactions with people that can lead to talking about matters of faith.

For example, I've been seeing videos of the latest Mortal Kombat guest character, Conan the Barbarian (via the 1980's Arnold Schwarzeneggar version) asks other players, "What god do you pray to?" It's an interesting bit of trivia I've tucked away because I could see using this as an opening line for an opportunity to ask someone what god THEY believe in, and go from there.

I'm pretty awful at games (no coordination!) and couldn't own them due to my own personal convictions anyway, so I'm glad there are little "cheat codes" like this that allow me to start talking to people on their own level. I've found that knowing just enough to be able to engage in what people are talking about, but without having to watch these things myself, has been a useful bridge that can lead to more meaningful conversations.

How about you?

* Do YOU believe in "cheating" when it comes to games, puzzles, challenges, and entertainment?

* Or do you prefer working things out on your own? Does it drive you crazy when people "leak" spoilers?

* When it comes to entertainment, what kind of "cheating" do you think is allowed, and why?

Just a fun little thread to help get us all through the week! :)
Interesting stuff there Seoul, i'm undergoing a total rethink on how to define cheating, your interpretation has flummoxed me some.

Cheating has always been totally poohy and vile from my p.o.v, if i can't achieve by my own merit, it ain't worth a light to me sort of thing. However, i don't see googling, or in my case startpaging etc, as cheating, so long as we're honest about the source of our information. Cheating involves intentional deception to me, it's yucky self aggrandisement by deceiving/lying to others and could never float my boat.

About to have a lovely, long bath in some gorgeous smelly stuff, is there a forum meetup tonight?

@LifelongLearner,

No official forum meetup tonight, but you're always welcome to go check out the other chats going on. :)

I might be hanging out there myself, but just listening and maybe typing some replies.

Lynx can hold his own in a chat any day, any time. Me, I get more mentally worn out. Especially because I know in order to keep people coming, we're going to have to think of activities and topics to keep people interested, and that takes a toll on me after a while.

I need to take a break.

I'm such an introvert that even trying to put on an "online face" can sometimes feel overwhelming.

I'll post a thread whenever we decide to have another meetup! :)

Made me feel a little sad, what you said there that is, however, might observer, rather than introvert, be a tad more accurate? Hey, think people like Suze, 2nd time is the charm and me would enjoy chucking our two bobsworth in sometimes, when it comes to forum meetup bait. Actually, sure a lot of interested people would have ideas, might be worth asking if people want to share ideas.

Bath ready, like a couple of hours soaking and need to get done before Dreamer's evening meal, Blessings and hugs for now, i should be about for a while later on 🤗

Well, I think I've gotten to be fairly good at labeling myself over the years. 😁 I'm definitely an observer, and I love to banter with people online, but I draw energy from the times I pull away to think, reflect, and talk to God. Without enough of that, I'm a goner -- which I personally believe heavily qualifies me as a good old-fashioned introvert.

And yes, Lynx and I have written TONS of threads asking people for ideas about such things over the years.

It all comes down to what you'll see in any formation of groups/activities -- lots of good ideas, but many are not feasible, and only a tiny handful of people will actually do what it takes to keep them going, so in the end, even the best of ideas are often not helpful or practical.

Years ago, I wrote a thread in Singles that was called something like, "The Singles Forum Goes to the Movies" -- it set up a group scenario of everyone in Singles going to a movie, asking what genre of movie people wanted to see, what kind of snacks we should get, etc., and it had a huge response.

People, at that time at least, seemed very excited about the prospect of a whole thread series like it for virtual trips for the Singles Forum. I followed up with things like "The Singles Forum Goes to an Aquarium," "The Singles Forum Goes Camping," "The Singles Forum Goes to the County Fair," etc.

And there were all kinds of suggestions of what we could do next.

But I find the same issue over and over. People have WONDERFUL ideas, and that's awesome!! But in the end, it's going to fall on me, and me alone, to write the threads, put the ideas to use, keep things going, etc.

Which is to be expected if I'm the one asking for the ideas -- I understand that. I'm certainly not trying to sound like, "Oh, whoa is me!" or anything like that.

I'm just saying, these experiments like this teach me a lot about my own limitations and how much I can actually take on. I find out how much I can do before I start to burn out. Threads, at least the way I want to write them, take a TON of work, so it takes a lot of motivation and energy for me to write them. And I get bored writing the same kinds of threads over and over, so I need creative freedom to try different things, and not just the same old formulas.

And I know other people get bored by the same old same old as well (such as our chat meetups if they're not meeting anyone new or interesting,) so I know if I'm going to try to lead something, it's up to me to try to keep things interesting.

Ideas are never-ending.

Applying them and continually doing so, however, is a much different animal.

That's actually upsetting Seoul, most people have no idea how much social engineering affects them and probably couldn't handle the personal autonomy available to earlier generations. i was a teenage Londoner most of the '70's, we had strong political/social awareness and really believed we had the power to kibosh stuff we didn't want. It was Thatcher selling off council housing stock and the stock market big bang of the 1980's which made me realise something extraordinary was going on.

Back to the meetup forum, think it would be good if people wanted to take turns at MCing meets? You're fantastic at organising such things but it's a lot of responsibility for one person, i also think it's healthy for others to invest some time and energy too. Also, you look great in that photo, it's obvious you're good looking but seems to me people often pick up on a lack of confidence and act accordingly?

Missy Dreamer wants some attention but i'll hangout here for a little while, need an early night for a change too.

huh I don't remember the movie thread.
I tried to go into the Lounge thread, but the guy said it was closed.
Well, I tried.
I just make threads out of anything. I don't really do it to get everyone together...just post random thoughts, and if people respond, great, if not, I'm just typing to myself...but at least I won't forget what I thought.

I used to be very active in many forums/groups but now just concentrate on two at the moment - this one, and the other one! It's not up to me to post all the time or keep things going, and if I get bored I leave...I don't do moderation, I suppose it works.

I think some ppl might be tired of me, I have heard some people write 'same old Lanolin' again. Well what do you expect, a different, new Lanolin? My twin that I don't have? lol

Yes -- the number one thing people have said in response to our live chats is, "I can't make it on that day and time." But it's the only window Lynx and I currently have available, so every time someone has said that, we've suggested that they start or hold a chat on a day and time that's best for them.

As far as I know, there have been no takers.

I sure hope I don't sound like I'm cutting down any of your ideas. I guess it's because I've been in groups and have observed how they work (and all the downfalls they run into) for a very long time, so I knew from the start that there would be a lot of challenges.

I appreciate your kind thoughts, thank you. :)

I'm not sure when we'll be having another live chat -- Lynx could hold one any day, at any time, but I'm not sure what his schedule is.

Me -- my temperament is much more finicky, and lately I've felt like withdrawing from most everything, so I'm not sure if I'll participate in a chat this Friday.

If there will be one, I'll post a thread on Thursday (but it might take a while to be seen, as threads must be approved before they are posted.)

Hope to catch you at one sometime in the future! 💖

Do u want me to b totally honest ? Please don't b offended ! I think it's a really bad idea 😞 . If u start to talk to someone about anything , a book , a game , a film etc and , u haven't read , played or watched it all properly and they have . If u do that and try to present that u have , they will b able to tell and , u will totally ruin your credibility with that person . They may not challenge u about it but they will know that u r bluffing and this cones across as disingenuous . I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings truly I am but , I have to say how I truly feel ❤️ . For many people , books , games , films etc , r meaningful experiences , pretending that u have shared that meaningful experience and talking about it as if u have , when they catch u out , that will really turn them off u . Please forgive me for being so blunt 🥺 . I hope u take this message in the way that I intended it , with love and honesty ❤️ .
Sometimes it's the preferable option though...

If anybody calls you on a fact you got wrong, just tell them it's from the Jedi Prince series of Star Wars books. That series had so many canon breaking oddities that Star wars fans in general have agreed to pretend it does not exist. o_O

This happened to me on a date once. The guy started talking about Star Wars and making obscure references I didn't get. I'd only ever seen it once (on the tv) and it was not something I stayed up to midnight for. But I ruined it by not pretending I knew what he was on about but by saying 'You're so old!' lol

Movies can be popular amongst a certain demographic and when you were not the targeted age group to see it come out it can be sort of awkward.

My younger friend is horrified I haven't seen the newer Disney movies, like Tangled..and others...I'd only seen the animated princess ones, Lion King, Aladdin etc. So she's resolved to educate me by having a Disney movie marathon with the 'newer' ones. New to me of course. To her they are classics.

I remember one time one of my flatmates bf said he had never seen The Sound of Music. He was more than 10 years older than I was. It was always on tv. It was a classic! I responded 'Where have you been living? Under a rock?!'

Yea I am so tactless.

Even amongst Christians it can be a thing. I had no idea of the Hillsongs. Everyone else knew about them except for me. Then went to church that had them all the time, and often repeated the same ones in the same service! I was like..where are the hymns? How come no choirs? No gospel music??? I want harps!

You're not one for cutting ideas from others down Seoul, much more likely to welcome them! You speak from experience for sure, and it's lovely to see there's a forum meet this eve. Hope i can hang around for a while, a bit tired already but i'd love to get a decent idea of how things work currently, just live chat experience too.

Oh glory, new neighbours moved in to the flat below me, sounds like it'll be a fight night for them. Hopefully not too bad, i'm not far from London and we're getting a lot of London overspill in the area now.

I was playing a card game named Bullshoot the (nice version of the name) with my family. They just taught it to me that night and had never played before. My nephew said to me Aunt Darlene you cheated..... I said with the name of the game I thought it was a requirement....lol

Most times I play by the rules but one time while playing Rook with friends I was loosing and just could not get a good hand to save my life that night and it wasn't much fun. All of a sudden I got this crazy idea to pick the person that had the highest score and take them down with me. At first I wasn't getting very good reactions but when they realized what I was doing they got on board and we then invented the new game of Kamikaze Rook.

On a serious note and at 71 reflecting back I did cheat on a boyfriend once. We were pretty serious and I cheated with another guy. Lesson learned so many got hurt out of that situation that it was a onetime deal and I never did it again. I think sometimes we have to learn the hard way and that I did for sure.

We might be confusing the definition for a singular word, with the wholly different definitions derived from using that word in a figure of speech, or a particular expression. Figures of speech, or peculiar contextual expressions, often have very different meanings than the constituent parts. That's why translating a language is so difficult, because figures of speech don't translate directly.
A figure of speech, or a peculiar contextual expression, isn't always equal to the whole of the parts.

It's been fun.
You have a great night.

.
I mean she did use the word Cheetah so the definitions are wide open. lol

Can't cheat at Snap or Last Card. Or Go Fish.
I'm going to add Cheetah to my cat names list, along with Lynx, Lion of Judah, Puma, Jaguar, Cougar and Sphynx.
