Actually the Model T sold for about $825 its first year and when adjusted for inflation, it would be almost $25,000 today. Much of what has driven up the cost of vehicles (beyond inflation) can be chalked up to regulation (minimum fuel economy, safety features, etc)
I remember when a new Sentra cost about $5,000 and a new Yugo was even less. But I also remember minimum wage under $3.
Earnestly I don't recall exactly. Money went alot further but I never had much. I do remember when I was first married, I could live decently on $800/month. But...I had no car payments and could buy a decent used car for less than a grand.
Growing up in Long Beach, Ca., I recall going to the supermarket and coming home with two large paper bags, paper that is, with groceries including potatoes and hamburger for under $3.00, no exaggeration! I was in my teens and had done a lot of the shopping myself, so I do recall that with accuracy. As for the price of cars,, in the 50's I believe you could buy a good used car for $500.00
PS..you could get a clunker for $50.00i......... If we look up f0 years earlier we find many things were incredibly low priced, however money keeps devaluating so that is not a true reference for times after.
I have always believed that there is nothing wrong with deflation, except for one thang. It does not exisst.
No abs, no traction control... I LOVE it when my current used car doesn't have any computer controls to get in my way. I know how to drive and sometimes I WANT to slide.
It's absolutely ridiculous that the average vehicle today costs $50,000. I paid $50,000 for my first house in 1991. That same small, starter house today would sell for $200,000. All the new SUV's these days that I really like cost $50,000-$60,000. I remember when my wife and I purchased our first brand new car together in 1993 and it cost $13,500. There was another car in the showroom at that time which was a new model that I really liked and I remember looking at the price tag and it was $18,000 and I thought, "are they out of their minds?!" like that was a lot of money to pay for a car back then. $18,000 for a brand new car today would be a steal!
My parent’s grocery cost for the week was five dollars, if I recall.

What most people forget to mention is, how long it took to scrape up that money. You didn't make nearly as much back then.
Now if I could take my NOW money to back THEN and buy stuff, that would be great. I'd have to make sure to not bring any bills that had been designed after THEN though...
But to go back to THEN and make what I made then, just so I would only have to pay what I paid then... no thanks!

Bought a new Hyundai AWD Kona for about $28,000 a couple of months ago.
It's a pretty small SUV. I like it very much, but thought that for that size, it should have been $5 - $8 thousand cheaper.
And forget any haggling. They had very few GAS cars on the lot, so I had to wait a couple weeks for it to come. When I tried negotiate a better price, he said, " that car sells before we ever get it on the lot, so that's the price".
Funny to see all the EVs sitting around that nobody wants.
I wanted to get a new car because God knows when these wicked elite politicians will outlaw new gas cars.

Our Mom & Pop grocery kept tabs on us, credit, there is one grocery in my town that still does, I love it.
I have a theory as to why the liberals want us all driving electric car, with todays technology they can shut down those cars during any deadly alterations with the citizens as in w a r. That would separate us from mustering a mil itia in a brief time.
