bottom side up or top side up?

It depends on where I'll be storing them.
If they're out in the open, I'll store them bottom side up for the very reasons you mentioned (dust and dirt, etc.) I'm personally not a fan of floating shelves with no doors in the kitchen because of the amount of debris (skin cells! Yuck!) will settle on the things you're cooking/eating from.
However, if I'm storing them securely in a cabinet or cupboard with a door, I'll store them right side up.
I realize they'll still get some amount of debris, but as the only one using them, I find drinking utensils easier to pick up/less likely for me to accidentally drop one if I get can anchor my grip both around and partially inside the rim.
Bottom side up, but not for the reason everyone else has cited... Although that IS a good reason.
Fact is, I need the draining rack space and the cups are still damp. I still got the bowls, plates and pans to wash, and the cups are taking up space I need. So I put the cups in the cupboard upside down and keep washing dishes.

Why does nobody ever put the plates and bowls in the cabinet upside down for the same reason?
They are in the same air, collecting the same dust.
Everyone puts cups upside down, but I never see anybody's kitchen with a stack of plates or bowls upside down.

quite interesting point there lynx. it's too awkward to do that but you are correct. i always look at housewares b4 using.
This really is an interesting thought.
I was thinking about this as I opened up my cupboard for my coffee mug this morning. Now, as I'd said in my own post, if the dishes are protected by a door, etc. and not out in the open, I leave the cups right side up.
But even if I put them upside-down in my cupboard, all my plates and bowls would still be right side up.
Why bother doing something different with the drinking utensils, I'm not sure. Now you'll have me thinking about that the rest of the day!
