Do christians really know the importance of marriage and how much God hates divorce?!

So you don't see anything amiss with a scenario where a "pastor" has several grandchildren by 3 never married daughters? I s'pose there could be some detail like they were kidnapped as a group and raped over the duration of their capture, then freed and tho pregnant refused abortions because they were such devout God Fearing women.

When more likely they are 3 women who have no regard for God, God's precepts or their father.... who raised them!!! SO if a pastor has 3 idolatrous daughters who were sexually immoral... I would say that is a BIG FAT FAIL in the parenting department in raising your children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. That is why the scriptures give specific instructions in appointing overseers... so you appoint QUALIFIED ones... not popular, nice or friendly disqualified ones.
 
I've seen it before myself. I remember meeting a church leader with two daughters both in their very early twenties whom were both already divorced. Their attitude was that it "was no big deal." Period. They couldn't have cared less. It "was behind them."

My thought was that it wasn't though. Serial monogamists represent another entangling group to avoid imo. While an argument can be made they don't represent the moral danger that fornicators and adulterers do, they still represent a clear and present danger to your life.

But his daughters still have their own free will. You can do your best in raising them in the way they should go, but they can still choose to rebel against anything you teach them, unfortunately (for the good things you've taught). So although it's a possibility, it may not necessarily be that the pastor didn't do what he was supposed to do as a parent.

interesting about the words you used to distinguish the "groups"... the scripture does indicate that "serial monogamists" are actually adulterers... and yep... that is a nasty mess to disentangle when presented. That alone is a pretty good reason to run to the feet of Jesus and confess him as your Lord.

I am not disputing that that what you say is TRUE. I am specifically addressing that there is CLEAR SCRIPTURE INSTRUCTION for appointing overseers... either you are going to AGREE and DO WHAT GOD INSTRUCTS or NOT. Which side of the equation are you going to be on... the God Says or the Nots?

Sorry to have offended you BarlyGurl. Wasn't my intention to call into question if I'm with God or not. Just addressing your comment that the pastor's daughters' actions indicated a parenting fail.

Or maybe you meant the general "you", as in people in general, and not me specifically. *shrug*

I am not offended Multi. Yes indeed the "you" was a general and specific... It was a "rhetorical" sort of question, not intended to be answered as a defense rather to be considered by the "you" reading. I did mention that your summation of the "parenting fail" could be true... but it does not change the fact that according to the word of God... that guy (in the scenario we were discussing) is disqualified to be a pastor. Doesn't mean he is a heretic, a bad guy, doesn't love his family, or even has bad theology.... it just means he is disqualified to be an overseer.

It is no different if the bible said "God forbids anyone who has red hair from being a pastor" <which it does not> but if it did, would it be okay for churches to have a red-headed pastor? <answering my own rhetorical question> NO.

That's all I am pointing out here... no personal issue... just commenting about scenarios in light of the word of God.

SMH... if you "don't have the capacity to" or" don't want to" use the light of scripture to JUDGE scenarios presented in the threads... that's fine... but making derogatory comments about the people who are is... well... HYPOCRITICAL!

BarleyGurl, I don't necessarily agree with your position but I have to admire your tenacity. :)

That said, I'll save most of my comments for other threads. This one has become entertaining and unsafe for differing opinions. Should we move it to the BDF? Or should I just make some popcorn? *grins*

IF I were a MAN and I were a PASTOR and my children were in sinful lifestyle... I would expect that my elders and congregation would ask me to step down and I agreeably WOULD because the scripture plainly teaches this is cause for disqualifying overseers.

In the same manner... if God said no redheaded pastors then there shouldn't be red headed pastors.

But I don't suppose that answering the "question" in the CONTEXT of the actual comments I made... will satisify your inquiry which is not actually related to the subject of my comments at all. SHEESH!

Start a thread... this one is supposed to be about the importance of marriage and got hating divorce. I think it would be a good idea to swing back that direction.
