Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.’” Saul’s plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.

you just sent the most detailed post i ever seen. holy heavens!

It's not applicable to the topic anyway. Let's move on.

How are you and your wife when you have disagreements? How do you work them out?

i assent. i never heard that before. i hope you weren't offended & that you were being funny. good question. since i am direct & to the point, i win the arguments. i'm just saying it that way, there's no win or lose. she has a habit of adding tangents in which she gets lost. but we really don't argue, we discuss. she's very emotional & can cry easily. some would say i shouldn't do this but when a discussion turns up, i stand right in front of her & look her in the eyes as much as possible. i developed that when i had to scold employees for wrong doing. it works like a charm

I think Zero was also making thisjoke because a short while back, a user here in Singles actually did write a thread asking the ladies how many foreskins they thought they would be worth as a bride-price, using this same verse as a reference.

He even put up a poll with number ranges.

Yup. that's where I got the idea. Oh well. This is why I can't be married. Women are too sensitive. I love women, I really do, but I just can't walk on eggshells for the rest of my life. I'm too old and physically weak for marriage or a relationship anyway.

We tell God what we want our spouses to be like, but not do anything to be a good spouse to them?

I couldn't agree more.

This is a major reason as to why I'm single.

I've told this story often -- when I was on the Christian dating sites, I was approached by 2 Caucasian men with adopted Asian children. They were very excited at the thought of their children having an adopted Asian stepmother.

This is perfectly understandable (and at one point in life, I thought I would adopt as well.) But they were so focused on how I would fit with their wants and needs, they didn't ask even once about me or what I might want or need.

One blocked me and told me it was "my loss" when I wasn't going along with the perfect-for-him mold he had set out, expecting me to pour myself into it.

When I was younger, I compromised who I am.

But now that I'm older and can fend for myself, I'm a lot less quick to do so.

Just recently, I saw a prayer request on this site asking everyone to send a good Christian wife who would "love him and provide great sex."

Not a single word about what he would offer her. The first thing I think when I read "requests" like this is, "So are YOU going to be able to love her -- and provide great sex?!"

I'm not trying to knock on anyone and I'm certainly not trying to knock men.

It's just that I've always been the type that people have opened up to about their most personal issues.

And I'll just say, I've known a lot of married people who definitely didn't feel they were getting a very good return on investment in that arena.

Oh. no not the foreskins thread ...AGAIN

I was referring to Hope Chests in that one, but everyone ignored me.

Hope Chest/Glory Box/ Trousseau --- all the same things. You put all your worldly possessions you are going to need for your marriage in a box, eg wardrobe, dinnerware, linen etc.

Because in a traditional marriage you are supposed to move out of your home to a new one with your spouse, preferably one you both will own.

Back to the topic of this thread. What do you think of what Karlon said? I think it's a good idea to try to put your spouse first and give her some nice surprises that she will love.

I posted a lyrics video of James Ingram's "One Hundred Ways". It a good advice for the women too for their future husbands.

I'm not too imaginative about these things since I'm not getting married, but I'd probably make his favorite meals and set the table and room like it was a restaurant so it would be like we went to a restaurant, and he wouldn't have to spend money, lol!

How about you all? What nice surprises would you make or give for your future spouse?

I definitely agree that married people can be great examples to learn from (and also, in some cases, examples of where we can try to improve ourselves.)

The easiest couples to listen to, of course, are the ones with happy stories.

The ones I pay the most attention to though, are the ones who don't have happy stories -- but choose to honor what God says and stay together despite the unhappiness.

I used to work with a beautiful native Filipino girl who had married a much-older white man. She told me he would scream at and threaten to deport her every time she displeased him or didn't do what he wanted.

She said that she only stayed because of her belief in Jesus.

I can't even imagine having to deal with that on a daily basis -- and know that this is what you were committed to until death.

You scold your wife?
Or is it like 'look at moy, look at moy' thing Kath always did to her daughter Kim when she was being obnoxious or had a fight with her or her second best friend?

Kath's husband Kel was always trying to kiss her but they never quite got there, was more air kissing. When her daughter saw (she'd moved back home) she just would say 'revolting!'

They were always doing romantic things but you not meant to do them in front of your own kids. After children come along, even if they are grown up, you just don't do that or keep it in the bedroom.

I remember when the X-Box came out.

I saved all my spending money to put down a pre-order for it as a surprise for Christmas. When it came in, I was able to sneak it into the apartment while he was at school.

But I couldn't contain my excitement because I knew how happy he would be!! So, I wound up giving it to him early. The look on his face is still one of my fondest memories.

And he used to do a lot of sweet things for me as well, like holding a surprise birthday party for me with our friends (we were supposed to just be going out to dinner, but there everyone else was!) Lol.

I do really miss those times.

I will always mourn the fact that things fell apart.
