Prayer was important and so was the Holy Spirit. Having a relationship with God was paramount. I don't recall how they viewed Jesus!? Some people on this thread have stated He's a prophet to the Mormons; but I'm pretty sure they viewed Him as the Son of God and the Trinity. My mind is foggy on that. The Book of Mormon wasn't really featured that much, primarily studied King James O/T and N/T.

From what my friend was told by them, they believe in Christ, they believe He was the Son of God, and they believe in the trinity. But they dont believe that Christ was God incarnate, they believe He is seperate from God, and is not God with us. That would make God more than one God, and would deny the prophecies of Him being of God in the OT. We are both Christian, so we believe this is a false doctrine.

This is what weve heard so far, but I dont really know much else yet. I think this will be a good learning experience for me though. If the day comes that I meet a young Christian whos thinking about becoming mormon, and I tell him he shouldnt, and he asks me why, I can actually give him a real answer, over just saying "cuz", which no one would listen to :p

I'm confused. Why are you going?? It sounds like you are interested in going to try to put out a house fire with a glass of water.

They invited us to. They are very open about tlking about the bible, and like I said in my opener, the conversation I had with the mormon was very positive, and we both praised God together. It was very nice, actually.

If anyone thinks this is some battle, I never said there was fighting :p Theyve invited us to their halloween party and everything (we couldnt go, though). The one my friend met is way talkative and open to talking about the bible, we did not make a plan to come and force it on them, but to take him up on his offer.
If someone asked you to talk about the bible, what would you do? I also kinda saw this as a good way to sharpen myself in His word, actually :p I think it will actually be beneficial for us.

Morning Yeraza_Bats,

We know that they believe that Christ came to the US to preach

Besides all of the other beliefs that are not scriptural, such as their belief that Jesus is the spiritual brother of Satan, when scripture states that Jesus created Satan and all the angels and everything else (Col.1:15-18), they also believe that Jesus visited America either after his ascension or a year after his resurrection. Either way, this would be direct conflict with what Jesus warned believers about:

"So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. (Mt.24:26)

The scripture above is a warning against those who would come claiming to be the Messiah or the location of the Messiah. If they say that the Messiah is in wilderness or in a secret room, don't believe them and many are claiming that very thing today. Jesus made a distinction of how people would know how He, the real Messiah, would return, which would be like the lightning that shines in the east and is also visible in the west. The meaning of this is that, his return will be a spectacular, earth stopping, event that no one will be able to miss. Since Jesus gave us this warning, then Mormon's making the claim that Jesus visited the America's after his ascension or after his resurrection would be in direct conflict with this scripture. In fact he would be going against his own word. But like the Witnesses and the RCC, they have their own books and they do not consider the Bible as the ultimate source of truth and authority, which of course makes it difficult to prove anything from scripture.

Remember, their be Lord's many and gospels many. And remember what Paul said about anyone preaching another gospel other than the one you first received, let them be accursed. You may have praised God together, but because of their beliefs they are believing in a different God and a different gospel than you, for it is not the same God of scripture. Do you know what their motto is: "As man is God once was, as God is man may become". Lucifer thought the same thing, that is, that he could be like God and look what it got him.

Well God-speed!! If you're both open and honest about not pursuing their faith they will be utmost respectful; but remember their goal is to bring you to Mormonism. They even pray for lost relatives and you can get baptized in place of a passed relative. This is why they're so intense about genealogy. Basically everyone that is not properly baptized 'in the true Church of Jesus Christ' is going to hell. (From what I remember!)
Like I said, it's all about being purified and right before God. So I doubt you will even see I smidge of anger or temper.

I will tell you this one story because I found it so troubling and sad;
this Mormon young man I met through the church was self-mutilating his own arms because he felt SO much guilt for masturbating. He felt this was a punishment he deserved, was highly depressed.
That is the immense stress of perfection that is burdened upon the people.

Just be careful, they are 'like' white doves, very tempting to pet.

Whoa, I had not known that, thank you for sharing that with me. And yeah, I would agree, I dont think they are on track with the God of Abraham, but at the very least, praising God with him, he will see me as a friend and not an enemy, and maybe it can even help him open up to the word of God, untouched by the hands of others.

I want him to have a love of God, and see that we do, too. That you dont need a new gospel to love Him. I know that we /probly/ arent going to change him, yeah :p But maybe one day, when he is in trouble, he can remember what we shared with him, and pray in Jesus name for guidance.

Oh, and that reminds me, their meeting ended with a prayer, and my friend says they did not pray in Christ's name. My friend did, however, I do kinda wonder what they thought of that :p
(hopefully they did not take offence to it)

When I was first married as a 17 year old....I might have been 18 or so and my husband 19 a couple of young Mormon fellas knocked on our door. We invited them in and we had a nice discussion and we told them we already had the faith that we were going to belong to so they wouldn't get the idea that they would convert us...

The thing is we made friends out of this visit and they came by and visited several more times and we just became friends and they had a place to go every so often. We learned a little bit but it was not something we wanted to switch to because we didn't feel it lined up with the Bible but mostly we just had pleasant visits and were friendly.

Make sure you are grounded in your faith and know what you believe...there is nothing wrong with making new friends. I think people figure if you are a different religion one or the other must convert the other people to their religion. Let's get back to basics o.k. Isn't the most important thing Salvation and someone believing that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior? If one has repented and asked God to forgive them and they walk with God in the light of truth that they have then to me it is up to God to convict an convince someone to make changes in their life I will never be able to do the Holy Spirits job. But I can be a friend and show them Jesus by example the best way I can while keeping my relationship with God and loving Him first and foremost.

Go with the idea of making new friends and you might want to ask them if they are on a mission or not....maybe they are just going to college....

Goodness already spoke to this:

Young teenage pupils would go and get a prophetic writing about them...they would meet with someone assigned and they would give them a document (prediction) of their life. So that would determine if they were meant for a 'mission' and where around the world.

I have a pair of Mormons coming to visit me Thursday or Friday, their not sure which day yet. I find their visits (since '91) frustrating and irritating. I'm going to walmart tomorrow morning and get a No Soliciting sign for my door, and with a sharpie marker, write "no mormons, no JW's, no salespeople." :/ #true story

The mormons and jw's have avoided my neighborhood.....a pastor who lived right down the street would always invite them in and discuss what was wrong with their beliefs and why Christianity was correct......the places apparently just stopped sending people to our street for fear of losing more people.....

Is our focus orthodoxy or orthopraxy as primary? I believe we should honor both, but with "why" over "what."

Mormon teachings believe in the concept of eternal progression. This teaches that a man can one day become a god of another planet and populate it with spiritual children along with his eternal wife. If a person can become a god, then God cannot also be Triune, one God in three persons, since eternal progression teaches the existence of many gods.

Mormon writers have made clear statements that God is not a Trinity. For example, Mormon writer and leader James Talmage wrote, The trinity is three separate Gods: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. "That these three are separate individuals, physically distinct from each other, is demonstrated by the accepted records of divine dealings with man (Articles of Faith, p. 35).

Mormons teach Jesus is a created being. Therefore, he could not be eternal God or part of an eternal Trinity.

A. The first spirit to be born in heaven was Jesus, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 129).
B. Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers and we were all born as siblings in heaven to them both, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163; Gospel Through the Ages, p. 15).
C. Jesus' sacrifice was not able to cleanse us from all our sins, (murder and repeated adultery are exceptions), (Journal of Discourses, vol. 3, 1856, p. 247).
D. "Therefore we know that both the Father and the Son are in form and stature perfect men; each of them possesses a tangible body . . . of flesh and bones," (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 38).
E. "The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood - was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers," (Journal of Discourses, vol. 8, p. 115).
F. "Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers," (Mormon Doctrine, by Bruce McConkie, p. 547).
G. "Christ Not Begotten of Holy Ghost ...Christ was begotten of God. He was not born without the aid of Man, and that Man was God!" (Doctrines of Salvation, by Joseph Fielding Smith, 1954, 1:18).
H. "Elohim is literally the Father of the spirit of Jesus Christ and also of the body in which Jesus Christ performed His mission in the flesh..." (First Presidency and Council of the Twelve, 1916, "God the Father," compiled by Gordon Allred, p. 150). Second, Jesus is a son of God, not the Son of God.

Really!? I don't remember that, lol!! I slightly do recall mentioning being able to form your own planet one day, thus yourself in Heaven being taught to be your own God. I forgot about that...sounded cool at the time. Not so much now, lol!

One of the many areas in which Mormons fall short of saving faith is their belief that God is merely an exalted man who earned his position by good works (Mormon Doctrine, p. 321; Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345). This directly contradicts the Bible, which states that God has existed in His position as God of the universe from eternity past (Revelation 1:8; 1 Timothy 1:17; 6:15–16; Psalm 102:24–27). God was never a man (Numbers 23:19; 1 Samuel 15:29; Hosea 11:9) and is the holy and powerful Creator of all things (Genesis 1; Psalm 24:1; Isaiah 37:16). Mormons also believe that they themselves can attain the status of gods in the afterlife through their works here on earth (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345–354). However, no man can ever become like God (1 Samuel 2:2; Isaiah 43:10–11; 44:6; 45:21–22), despite what the serpent told Eve in the garden (Genesis 3:5).

Mormons also believe that Jesus was a god, but not God Himself (Mormon Doctrine, p. 547; Articles of Faith, p. 35; Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 372). It is essential to Christian faith that Jesus is one with God and that He is God’s only begotten Son who became flesh (
John 1:1, 14; John 3:16). Only Jesus’ oneness with God would have allowed Him to live a sinless, blameless life (Hebrews 7:26). And only Jesus Christ was able to pay the price for our sins by His death on the cross (Romans 4:25; Acts 4:12).

Those who follow the Mormon faith also believe that they can attain heaven through works (Doctrine and Covenants 58:42–43; 2 Nephi 9:23–24; Alma 34:30–35; Articles of Faith, p.92). While they claim faith in Christ, they also rely on following the commandments of the Mormon Church (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p 188;Mormon Doctrine, p. 670) and practicing good works (2 Nephi 25:23; Alma 11:37) in order to achieve salvation. The Bible is very clear on this point, stating that good works can never earn the way to heaven (Romans 11:6;Ephesians 2:8–9; Titus 3:5) and that faith in Jesus Christ alone is the only way to salvation (John 10:9; 11:25;14:6; Acts 4:12). Salvation by grace is incompatible with salvation by human works (Romans 11:6).

That's how I recall prayers ended, 'In the name of The Father, The Son, and the Holy Ghost...Amen.' The role of Jesus in relation to the Holy Spirit was extremely confusing. I still can't figure it out Mormon style!?!? When converting to Christianity; Jesus being God reincarnate made complete sense and why all are interconnected spiritually speaking. No 'man' on this earth could ever be sinless unless they were of God, it's just logical.

Follow up some of the links I have provided if you would like to gain a better understanding of the beliefs you were brought up in, and how they differ from other Christian beliefs. :) Like this one:
