Hello Everyone,

I am torn between two lines of thought and would like to know everyone's opinions and experiences.

Which is best?

1. To date several people and/or have several relationships before marrying to see what you like or don't like, or

2. To just wait on "the one God has for you" without much dating at all?

I suppose the third answer would be that different things work for different people. For myself, I haven't dated much but did have very long-term relationships. However, I always envied my friends who dated several people--I figured they knew a lot more than I did and were having a lot more fun.

But some of my friends (both guys and girls) who've dated a lot seem to have also developed an unforeseen "side effect"--they've become so bitter (sometimes without knowing it) and and suspicious that they cannot trust anyone. They're so used to falling for someone (or having someone fall for them), being lied to, cheated on, etc., that when anyone else comes along, they think, "Oh, who cares if you say you love me, it'll only be a matter of time before I catch you doing the same things," and the cycle repeats itself over and over, causing more and more damage each time.

One thing I don't like about myself is that for some reason, no matter how much I may hurt, I always give the next person the benefit of the doubt. I suppose it's a God-given trait but I feel like it also acts as a huge target on my forehead: "NAIVE AND GULLIBLE."

One of my best friends once told me she wished she could be more like that, because she says she "can't trust anyone now," even when she wishes she could. She is terrified of even trying to form friendships because of how many times people have lied to her.

I have heard that if you put up a wall around your heart, you will be successful in keeping others out. But the problem is, you also imprison yourself on the inside, leaving yourself no way out.

How about all of you? Has dating made you a better person... or has it made you bitter and suspicious? If not, how have you managed to keep a positive attitude? And if it has left you with negative feelings, how are you coping/working to change that?

As usual, the poll is anonymous and multiple-choice. God bless!

My answer:
I've dated several people before, and meh, it was okay~ wasn't positive or negative. It just wasn't anything to write home about. I'm looking for better chemistry.

Post Edit: I dated several guys before... not people. Just throwing that out there. And yes, I know, guys are people too.

Pre-dating chemistry and friendship is a plus, BEFORE dating.

Dating has so many cultural implications about what is suppose to happen that sometimes it just moves at an unnatural pace, feels synthetic and almost turns into an obligation.

I've made the mistake in the past of dating for the sake of "finding out" if there was something more to be found in a specific relationship. I only do this when I stop trusting my intuition. This is a huge mistake.

The best is when there is Something more already and both parties know it and everyone else does too.

I don't date for sport, but as a way of getting to know more about someone I already like a lot.

I'm not very trusting, but it's a cop thing not a dating thing. Don't really see it as an issue, merely a precaution. Trust, to me, is like respect - it's earned.

I don't have time for bitterness. Bitterness is a by product of unforgiveness and it steals from us.

Dating takes it's toll. In every single romantic relationship you have, you will find things you like or don't like about the person, you'll wonder why it didn't work out, you'll do and say things you regret, and all that will leave you with scars. There's no avoiding it...each new relationship broken off will leave you with some kind of scars which are carried into the next relationship. Some people deal with their scars better than others.

Back in high school (before I was a Christian) it was the mentality among my peers to date lots of people to see what you like. I think Liamson has the right idea...being friends first makes things way better. As friends you see more of who the person really is.

I have a Christian friend who still thinks that dating around is the best way to go, and consequently she seems to have a new boyfriend every time I talk to her. She doesn't even bother updating her facebook anymore and she doesn't even mention them in conversations unless it's brought up. I think she's at the point where she is so scarred that it hurts just to be alone for too long.

I wasnt going to respond to this thread, but here i am..

When someone has really hurt you, wheather it be one person or many. Its easy to try and use someone else to try and make that hurt go away. Sometimes the person may not even realize their doing it. When person A doesn't cut it you move on to person b,c,d,e..... on and on it goes.
Most of what your left with is a lot of bitterness and more hurt than the original person or persons caused.

I know dating around may look fun to you, but to the person who has more scars than skin, i believe its a compulsion, and a means to insure that they are important to someone, that somebody cares about them.

Those were just my thoughts after i read your post

It seems like people who date a lot get good at leaving, but don't learn anything about staying.

Thank you for the post, Niceguy--it's very insightful and has made me think a lot tonight.

For myself, my relationships did teach me a lot. All were difficult in different ways, most especially with the alcoholic whose kids needed a mother. I stayed for 3 years. Am I glad I had the option to leave? You bet. But if it would have been a marriage, I would not have had a choice (however, I will state that if had turned more abusive, even within a marriage, I would have left.)

During my single years, I got involved in prison ministries and made a friend along the way. We are still friends to this day, and it's been 10 years. I've never spent a single minute with him outside the prison walls, and it's always only been a friendship.

We've seen each other through very harsh times and have been extremely raw with each other. I've told him he wouldn't still talk to me if he were living in the "real" world of everyday circumstances; he's told me to "take your charity and get the [heck] out." I've been there when he's had close people leave or betray him; he's always been there even when I showed up for visits with cuts up and down my arms and legs. He was there to comfort me when my beloved Grandma died. And I've spent 3 Thanksgivings in the prison visiting rooms.

I told God several months ago, "God, I haven't had a relationship in 10 years. All this time has been a waste," and I feel like God told me, "No, Kim. JJ (not his real name) has been with you this entire time."

It's NOT because we've had a "relationship"--it's never been like that. But what I feel God meant is that it's been a huge lesson in what it takes to see someone through life and not leave--which has probably been better for me than if I'd had 10 relationships during that time instead.

I haven't dated at all...and I think that makes it better for me. It's not because I don't trust people, I give people the trust they earn and deserve, it's rather a compatibility issue - spiritual and emotional compatibility. I can't trust someone with my heart until I know they value what they got in their hands. I have felt feelings for someone but for one reason or another, I couldn't find what was necessary to actually start working towards a solid relationship. I'm not even sure if dating is in my vocabulary....if I'm interested in someone I just wait and see the outcome of our relationship and then I judge if we can be something more. I am not bitter, I like to think I am waiting for something good that will be worth the wait. :)

I had a lot of meaningful relationships before I ever started "Dating"

I started that when I was 22 ish.

It kind of ruined me in a lot of ways.

If I had it to do all over again I would never have even started dating. It makes a relationship feel like an interview and it leads to Obligatory acts of affection. Which aren't natural.

Stilly, can you come up with a "this person is awesome" button we can click? :D

I think it is better to wait for the right one from God. it saves you soooooo much energy.. besides, when you wait on God, He will mold you into the best He wants you to be, so you will be prepared to get into marriage (or maybe not..)
Just know that you should be able to be in love with God first before being in love with someone else.

I go on dates with myself all the time and I don't think its made me any better or bitter. But it sometimes makes those seated near me afraid...very afraid.

It has made me broken. But it's ok. I don't mind. In some ways it has been a gift and I can really relate to some people better because of it. Plus my body only has to last another 60 or so years. :)

I don't ever want to hurt anyone again. So I guess I will date someone when I want to consider them as my only option for marriage and when I want them to consider only me for marriage. Date them until I work that out.

One of the odd things about being single I guess... you aren't really committed anywhere, free to talk to whoever, have conversations with whoever.

What you said Seoul is kind of interesting. Being single does let you have some conversations and relationships with people that you normally wouldn't be able to have if you were married. Guess you can just get closer to more people.

I believe we should all give folks the benefit of the doubt, yet tie it in with wisdom..I am learning this..for instance..if they are a non believer, well they can only be a friend..if they give you good reason to suspect something, chances are you are discerning something. But i agree..giving people a chance is not a weakness, but we must be balanced..if that is the word to say.

I have just started getting back to meeting folks and i wish i would have been as wise as i am this year this past year..i made many mistakes in dating/etc..and now i am learning by trial and error what to do..what not to do,what not to tolerate and what to sweep under the rug for the purpose of being grace oriented.

good stuff..
