I'm sure we're all aware this is a forum, and we're happy with that. People still chat here, though, so it works.
There were chat rooms, but they've more or less disappeared over the years with no official response.
A good rule of thumb is only responding to threads on the first page, to avoid bringing up old, dead threads.

Before the more modern 'verbal' chat room capability came along, 'chat' was descriptive of the written word in forums - indicating 'chatting'/'talking'/'conversation'/etc. - so, it [simply] came to be used for both.

I think CC started out primarily as a chat but problems seems to arisen with that side of it.
The only real difference looks to me is you have to wait longer for the response, bit like corresponding by letter instead of the phone.
Anyhow I hope you get to enjoy it
