Hey Everyone,

Some time ago, I was a bit distressed to learn that a guy friend only washes his coffee cup once every one or two weeks, while still actively using and drinking from it every day.

Now, I'm not trying to be judgmental, but I would personally be afraid of getting sick from some kind of bacterial infection. o_O

But to each their own, and if something works for someone and does no harm, then I say keep on drinking from that same old crusty cup!

As singles, we sometimes get to slack on a few domestic chores, putting them off for much longer times than if we had a family. When I moved into a place that had a dishwasher, I quickly realized that in order to make use of it, I would have to actually own enough dishes to fill it up!

Having battled with stomach issues on and off, I make sure I wash all the dishes I use every day. I usually don't like leaving dirty dishes overnight, because I hate the idea of things growing -- or feeding -- off them. True story: I once walked into a friend's kitchen, then yelped and ran right out because I heard an unmistakable, "SQUEAK!!!"

For whatever reason, in this household, no one washed the dishes until every last one was used -- and therefore, they just set up a mouse trap on the counter to catch anything that ran by. By time I had the misfortune of walking in, not one, but TWO mice had been caught -- in the same trap.

ACK.

I'm not meaning to judge anyone, but that's just NOT for me!!!

* How about all of you?

* What is the catalyst that make YOU decide it's time to wash dishes? (Or at least, your morning coffee cup.)

This, of course, is a question for everyone, not just singles! Everyone is welcome to answer.

* Do you have family members you wish would do dishes more often? Who has the responsibility in your house of making sure they are washed?

* Do you use a dishwasher or prefer to wash by hand?

Just for fun, I'm going to post a poll with multiple choices and visible answers.

We may not be airing out any dirty laundry here (we'll save that for another thread ,) but how about exposing all of our dirty dishes?! :D

Lol the never-ending problem of dishes! BTW, Seoul, I love the fun threads you've been posting lately.

I have a houseful of younger siblings and they take turns doing dishes. I rarely "do the dishes" anymore. (My excuse is, I was their age once and had to do it, now it's their turn. lol) But to cut down on dishes for them sometimes I'll either rinse really well or wash the dishes I use and stick them in the drainer. My 12 year old brother acts like doing dishes is one of the worst punishments out there!

Washing by hand is a lot quicker and more economical than using a dishwasher so we hand wash. I wash or the dishes get washed after dinner most days. It's usually me but if I leave them my wife will sometimes do them. My wife is not chore oriented. If there are a lot of dishes before dinner I might end up washing dishes twice in a day. When we had the kids in the house the dishes might get washed three times in a day so the pile wouldn't get too large. In my Alaska house I never had a dish washing machine, but had a spot plumbed and wired for a dishwasher knowing that whoever lived in the house after we were gone would probably want a dishwasher. The house we're in now has a dishwasher. I use it once or twice a year when my wife isn't home just to exercise it. I do it when she's not home because I don't want her to learn to use it. If she learned how to use it she'd use it in lieu of doing the dishes herself.

I've only had a rodent that I'm aware of in a house I lived in once, and I'm not referring to a family member or relative. When I was stationed at Beale AFB, home of the super-cool SR-71 and U-2 spy aircraft, we lived in base housing on the edge of a vast wooded area. While we lived there we could sometimes hear animal sounds above the ceiling. I didn't care for that very much. One day I opened the cabinet above the stove and there was a huge rat that stared back at me. I quickly shut the door. Boy was I rattled! That was a huge rat. I called whoever on Base was responsible for such things and a guy came out to capture the rodent. He opened the cabinet door, took one look at the huge rat and shut the door just as I had. And he was clearly as rattled as I had been, even though he didn't have to live with the rat. He left and returned with reinforcements and somehow captured that demon rat.

P.S. The poll answer about baiting mouse traps with peanut butter and not solid gold (aka cheese) is for @Tazzo, in reference to her posts in the Sweet Tooth thread going on in Miscellaneous. :geek::cool::p

When I was in the army someone washed the motor sergeant's coffee cup. Sarge chewed him out saying he just washed away 10 years of flavor. I was my mug a couple times a week but not every day.

Lol!

Thank you for reassuring us that the rodent living in your house was not a family member.

My Dad worked at a grocery store and he's told us some hair-raising tales of taking the garbage out to the dumpster -- and encountering rats the size of cats. o_O

I'm pretty sure if I encountered a rat like that, I would let out a scream heard 'round the world -- then promptly pass out -- or die of a heart attack right on the spot.

Thank you so much for the kind words!

I'm a bit sporadic.

I struggle with depression a lot and the funny thing is, sometimes I feel very depressed -- and I don't feel like writing.

Sometimes I feel extremely depressed -- and something comes on me to where I suddenly start writing non-stop!

I also go through times of needing to do more reading and reflection rather than writing. So, I come and go, and I can't promise any kind of consistency...

But I'm always extremely grateful for the people who put up with my nonsense and take their precious spare time to answer these threads.

After all, the people answering are the ones who make any thread worth reading! :D

I also laughed out loud about your brother's attitude toward washing dishes... Ah, to be young again.

I mean, I still have that attitude about A LOT of adulting, but when you're young, everything thinks it's just normal when you let it show!

My life is a little brighter when you're starting your threads. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kindness. :)

The responses from you and others here are a great comfort to me, and a confirmation.

I'm always in-between, in every area of life. I obviously don't really fit with the secular crowd, because I'm a Christian. But I often don't fit with the Christian crowds because I can't do things like recite the Bible in Hebrew or argue it back to all the original manuscripts. And to tell you the truth, I don't want to. Now God bless the people who can do that, but I don't think that's what I'm called for.

Rather, I know I am called to be an everyday person talking to everyday people about what goes on in their everyday lives.

My whole premise is Finding God and Putting His Principles of Faith to work in our daily lives.

Yeah, this thread isn't dissecting a portion of the Bible down to brass tacks -- and may God bless all the people who are skilled in doing that.

An the surface, this looks like a silly little thread about doing dishes. But I see it as more than that. It's a way to give someone having a long day a break to talk about their everyday life. It's a chance for tired Mom or Dad to nod their head in agreement with other fellow Christians about the mundane tasks we do for ourselves and our families.

It's a chance to laugh and fellowship with other people who stop, pause, and thank God that we all have dishes and the hopefully the food to put on them.

Thank you so much to everyone who reads and participates in my threads.

I stay on this site because I feel very strongly that are are good people here who need the sense of community and belonging these discussions provide, no matter how simple.

I wash my dishes as soon as I've finished eating. I ain't married, but I know no woman is going to quarrel with me when I'm doing the dishes.

I work with one guy, and seeing stacks of dirty dinner plates strewn across his kitchen worktops/countertops every morning made me want to break his dirty dishes, so he wouldn't have any left to clean.

The Greeks used to smash plates to signal the end and the beginning. I ain't Greek, but crockery has gotta be cleaned and stored away after each use, for a safe resolution.

I won't step foot into his house anymore for that reason. Better to just wait outside in the car before our commute to work. :)

If things are going well and I'm working efficiently, I do the dishes and kitchen cleanup after every meal.
I've never used a dishwasher. I prefer to wash dishes by hand. I turn on music while I do house chores and sing along (badly) with the lyrics. It makes the time go faster.

However, I'm not perfect and I'm not always efficient. And I admit there are times when I want to do the dishes just the way those young fellas did the dishes on the movie Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. "The dishes are done, man!"

LOL!

This post reminded me of that scene in a Thor movie where Thor decides he likes coffee, so he smashes the cup on the ground and demands another!

I'm just picturing Kainos going around checking various CC member's kitchens -- and smashing any dish that isn't clean!

One question you left out is, do you leave dishes in the draining rack or dishwasher and use them as needed, or do you put them away when they are cleaned?

I am a single guy. One of the few perks of being a single guy is, nobody cares how long the dishes sit in the sink. I am holding on to that perk and not telling you anything about how often I wash dishes. So there!

I prefer to wash them by hand. If dishwashers could actually scrub dishes, that would be great! But all they do is squirt water on them. By the time I make sure dishes don't have anything that a dishwasher will leave on them, I might as well have done them myself anyway.

Since we're talking about mice, the only time I see mice in my house is when fall turns to winter and the mice in the forest look for a warmer place to live. Then I have to set up tomcat poison blocks again.

Lol good question. Only if there are more than can fit in the drainer do we dry them. What fits in the the drainer stays until it's time to wash another batch!

Good question!

I put all the clean dishes away. I shake them out, let them dry overnight, then put them all back in their places in the morning.

For me, it's a no-brainer because otherwise I'll be trying to put dirty dishes in the washer while using the clean ones, and that's no bueno.

I'd get confused over which is which (since I rinse them all out before putting them in the dishwasher,) and would start using dirty dishes by accident.

Ask me how I know.

Lol I figured it was the right thing to do to wash them after using them 😅😂

Everytime I use one I wash it afterwards. Same with my clothes...I wash them after wearing them once. 😅
