I have been told by a lot of people to try intermittent fasting, and I've been giving it some consideration. I know it's basically the act of getting your body to use the fat that's stored already, and I have a feeling that along with the suggestion to eat small portions every 2 hours like my dietitian said I may actually get some good results. Though I'm a bit concerned because I am prediabetic. This could mean if I don't eat for certain amounts of time that my blood sugar could get wonky. Does that happen to anyone else?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to counteract this? Anyone who has had it work?

I'm pre-diabetic also, and I notice that if I don't eat often enough, I get really shaky. I mean REALLY shaky. Of course, I'm also an epileptic so I can't go much more than 1 day without food. I drink at least 4 to 6 bottles of water per day, but the body processes water differently than food.

The main point of fasting is not to burn fat.
Fasting is the bodies reset mechanism.
And eating every two hours is not the way to go.
Being a pre diabetic, if it were me, I would do this:
You need to change your diet. Being a pre diabetic tells me your diet is not good, despite whatever you may or may not think of it.
Dont do intermittent fasting just yet.
Eat your last meal around 6pm. Eat your breakfast at around 9am. If you can do that, re your blood sugar levels.
Change your diet.
If you do this, your sugar levels will normalize.
After about 3, 4 months of this, then you can do intermittent fasting.
Which to me means go about 15 to 24 hours without eating. No more then 48.

As joseph said, i find eating evening meal at abt 6 fine, and can wait for breakfast at 8 am. I managed to see a naturopathic doc abt a month ago, who explained how long some foods are digested. Not sure i remembered it all right, and i'm not abt to check my facts now=), but he said fruits/veggies often digested in a few hrs (2-3), rice in 10, meats in 24, and oils much longer?? So depending on what we eat, we can make our tummies rest when we dont eat too much fried stuff, for example.

Hope this helps.

Some fruits digest in 20 minutes. most in 30, 35 minutes or a little less.
Fruit sugars are metabolized differently then other sugars.

I thought one reason of water fasting is to give the body a break from always processing food, I fixed indigestion (reflux) once with fasting like 24 hours, that never got fixed between dinner and breakfast, it has been said while you are asleep the body is busy repairing other things like doing a brain detox. Stay away from reflux medication. It can do more harm than good.

Another thing when you do not eat, the body will pick out your worse muscle in the body and use that for fuel, when you start eating again that muscle will get rebuilt and will be better. You can not kill yourself by short term standard water fasting. I fixed my sore knee, that was too sore to kneel at church, now I do not have any issue kneeling at church

So it is best to eat good quality food before and after water fasting.
