Hey Everyone,

This thread idea was brought up by our very own @Godsgirl1983. We've all probably heard the tagline, "Red Bull Gives You Wings," but just how concerned should we be when it comes to energy drinks?

A quick Google search says this about caffeine consumption in the USA:

1783881320823.png

And while caffeine-related deaths are rare, there are still other troubling statistics such as:

"Liquid caffeine products such as energy drinks have driven up a 35% increase in poison center exposures, and emergency department visits for teenagers more than doubled between 2017 and 2023."

In some stores I worked at (especially during night shifts,) energy drinks were a badge of honor. People were always boasting about how many they were slamming per shift. One young co-worker claimed he had to go to the emergency room because of them (but he was known to exaggerate and never showed any proof of his stories.)

We all know that most of us, no matter how hard we try, are often sleep-deprived and find ourselves reliant on some form of caffeine or "energy drink" to make it through the day.

And we've all heard at least one story like that of Larissa Rodriguez, a 17-year-old cheerleader who died from an enlarged heart caused by stress and large amounts of caffeine found in Alani Nu energy drinks. In her family's lawsuit, it was alleged that the company gave inadequate warnings for the 200 mg of caffeine in their drinks -- about twice the 100 mg per day max suggested for teenagers.

Some drinks, like "Feel Free", are already under a 21 And Older restriction because of addictive nature of their ingredients, kava and kratom. I've watched several videos of people losing their lives to these drinks (marriages, money, jobs, families, etc.) just as with alcohol and hard street drugs.

But as of right now, I didn't see any age regulations for buying caffeinated products in the USA (unless, of course, they also contain alcohol.)

Do you agree with this?

* How many cups/cans/glasses of caffeinated products do you use per day, and in what form? (Coffee, tea, pills, energy drinks, etc.)

* How do you believe these products affect people's overall long-term health? Do you think they're safe for the long-term? Why or why not? Any personal stories you'd like to share?

* What about for young people? Should there be restrictions and regulations on what and how much teens can buy themselves (as with alcohol?)

* If you want to see an age limit for buying caffeine, what should it start at?

* Do you ever have to talk with (confront) others how much caffeine their consuming -- because you're worried about their safety?

With caffeine being such an accessible drug to everyone (at least here in the USA,) I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts about it's pro's and con's -- especially in concentrated products like energy drinks.

The reason you Americans drink so much coffee is because threw all the tea in the Boston Harbor :)

I am not American but I would not be against an age restriction on Energy drinks for health reasons and, . although I do not drink them myself, I assume they can addictive like coffee is.

I make a pot of half decaf half real coffee for w*rk days. When I get home, I'll make a cup of decaf on the keurig.

On Friday, its a pot of regular coffee. No decaf till I get home.

On Saturdays, the percolator comes out and I make a pot of fresh ground regular coffee. I save special coffees for Saturdays.

On Sunday, its back to the half and half mix.

Another thing I add to my coffees is spices. I will alternate between cardamom, ceylon cinnamon, and cloves.

I never have understood that part. People act like espresso shots are a badge of honor. Like you can't just BUY a triple shot until you prove you can fall asleep after drinking a double shot.

Lol!

This made me laugh, thank you!

I have a friend who is a bit of a tea connoisseur, so maybe not all of us Americans have gone bad! 😁

I've read various reports over the years that caffeine in general should be regulated in all forms, but if they ever tried to do that here and included coffee and tea, I'm pretty sure that would be the start of another revolution! 😲

Has anyone tried that mushroom coffee that's been advertised all over the place?

I was recently around some friends who like it but I just couldn't -- the smell alone was enough to make my nose crinkle.

Kudos to anyone who likes it, but to me, it just smelled like flat-up dirt.

And not even CLEAN dirt, but the kind that's cold and damp and smells like a musty closet.

Yuck!!

In New Zealand we have Red Bull, but we also have an energy drink called V. I don't know what the V stands for. It's in a green can.
I don't want to know, and have never drank it, and don't want to find out.
I once tried a sip of Red Bull, and immediately hated it and spat it out.

One of the teachers in school was always drinking it everyday.
I don't think kids are allowed it, but nothing can stop them from buying it if they want to. There's also Monster, and it really is promoted like a demon drink.

And as you might know by now I dislike coffee. I only like it in Tiramisu. I don't even drink mochaccinos. I just have hot chocolate. In. fact I just had one half an hour ago.

I will use coffee grounds in the garden though. And you know how I feel about those coffee pod things.
Otherwise, other people's coffee habits I just tolerate, I don't share them.

Tea on the other hand, is a fairly civilised and relaxing, health giving drink.

I can't blame you -- I've hated any energy drink I tried, and it's only been a sip.

Unpopular opinion -- I hate electrolyte drinks like Gatorade, too. I'd rather spend the calories on something that actually tastes good.

I technically shouldn't have caffeine but chocolate and some coffees are just SO yummy.

My favorite coffee right now really does taste like a chocolate covered cherry, but it doubled in price, so I'm rationing what I have left of my stash.

Water and black coffee are about the only 2 things I drink. I might treat myself to a sarsaparilla, root beer, birch beer, or other soda once in a while. I like ice tea, but just like my coffee I do not want anything at all added to it. I'm not keen on hot tea, but sometimes I might have it for health purposes. Mostly, I like coffee. My main choice is Hills Bros Dark Satin whole bean. I drink at least a 14oz mug of hot coffee per day. I often make another mug after I've finished that mug. The rest of the time, I drink water.

I've been drinking coffee since my youth and I don't feel like it has impacted me negatively. My grandmothers drank coffee all their life. I remember one of my grandmothers had a pot of coffee going from morning to night.
I think that everyone should be able to choose what is best for them. My dad used to tell me that I drink too much coffee. It just made me want to drink more coffee lol.

I guess it wouldn't bother me if there was an age restriction on caffeinated drinks, mostly because I'm not young any more and it wouldn't affect me lol.

When I was moving out of a 3 bdrm apartment one time, I was working and moving at the same time. I had to be completely moved out by a certain time. I was so exhausted. I was throwing some things out and I actually fell asleep while walking from the dumpster back to my apartment. I woke up as I was walking on the sidewalk. I was incredibly tired. It was during this time that I did drink Red Bull until I got through that and then I didn't need it anymore so I stopped drinking it (until the next time I moved lol). Just speaking for myself, I think it's like anything else, moderation is key and also everyone's body is different. My body can handle things other people's bodies can't and other people's bodies can handle things mine can't. I think it's good to listen to your body and be in tune with it.

In any case, I'll be drinking black coffee until I depart this world.
I'll leave a memo to not leave flowers at my grave, just scatter some coffee around 😅:coffee:

Hell Pizza is relatively benign, the only dangerous substance in them is maybe the hot chilli sauce. But those Monster energy drinks with their chemicals and caffeine are something else.
