Hey Everyone,

A side discussion broke out in another thread regarding sweet, bubbly drinks -- and it was getting to be so interesting, the topic seemed to deserve its own thread.

So, let's pop all the bubbles and get straight to the controversy!

* Is it "pop", "soda", "Coke", or something else -- and why?

* Coke or Pepsi? Dr. Pepper or Mr. Pibb? Sprite or 7-UP? Mountain Dew or... (Does anything compete with the 'Dew?!)

* Do you prefer the big names or are there any smaller, independent sodie pop companies you like?

I remember when Jones Soda burst onto the scene in a very big way:

I also have a family member whose favorite creme soda is only found in certain parts of the country:

1761420587809.jpeg

And, for what just might be the MOST controversial question of all:

* Does ANYONE make a diet soda that actually tastes GOOD??!!!

I was very pleasantly caught off guard by Shasta's diet root beer:

I limit myself to only having pop once or twice a week, but this is honestly THE best diet pop I have EVER tried. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time finding it -- but maybe that's for the better, or I'm sure I'd be drinking a lot more of it!

And now it's YOUR turn!!

What CONTROVERSIAL opinions, facts, and questions do YOU have about sodie pop??! :D

I'm a big coffee drinker. Rarely drink soda/pop (we call it pop).

Welcome to CC, @sockfeet77!

We have lots of coffee drinkers here (many of them are experts, and at least one owns about 240 coffee makers -- at least, that's what it feels like,) so we have lots of conversations about coffee as well.

Thanks for joining in and I hope to see you around the forum! :)

I'm from Oklahoma and people here call it pop, except for me. I call it soda. I'm not entirely sure why, but I think it's because I had some classes in my youth with a girl from California and she called it soda and I think that rubbed off on me. Whatever the reason, I can't get used to saying pop, so I just stick with saying soda.

Coke or Pepsi? I don't really have a preference here. I very rarely drink either one.

Dr. Pepper or Mr. Pibb? Depends on my mood, but I think Mr. Pibb is at the top for me. When I lived in an apartment that was near to a shopping center, there was a soda machine outside that had Mr. Pibb. I woke up at 2am one time and had the craziest craving I've ever had for Mr. Pibb. I mean, it had to be Mr. Pibb. I got dressed and hurried down to the dark and empty shopping center, got a Mr. Pibb outta the machine, and stood in the desolate parking lot drinking it. Then I felt better and went home lol.

Nothing can compete with the Dew! lol

I greatly enjoy sarsaparilla. At festivals, I like getting it from homemade soda makers, but I also get it sometimes from the store. Always in a bottle. Not many stores have it though.

Next would be Shasta, and the very same one you mentioned! Fortunately for me, I am not very far from 2 grocery stores that have carried Shasta soda since I was a child.

I actually don't drink much soda. I mostly drink coffee and water. But, when I do want a soda, I'll have a bottle of sarsaparilla or I'll have Shasta Diet Root Beer or Shasta Diet Creme Soda.

Here's a sarsaparilla I got not long ago...

Sasparilla brand cream sodas are really good!
Once a year I usually get one as a special treat for my birthday.

I know I could Google this but I'd rather ask our intrepid CC experts.

What's the difference between sasparilla and root beer? 🤔😬😃

Gotta say mello yello tastes better than the Dew. I know it came later, specifically to compete with mountain dew, but I think it tastes less like a factory. Mountain dew just tastes like a can full of chemicals to me.

And if it's controversy you want... When I have had little sleep and must get through a w*rk shift, I occasionally get a cup and fill it with 1/3rd coffee and 2/3rd root beer. It makes coffee taste... not good, but at least not terrible anymore.

What's not terrible, the coffee or the root beer? The chemicals in Mountain Dew can catch you a buzz. It's not so bad if you think about it. I like Mountain Dew but don't care for the dozen or so variations that came out later.

My go to is Dr.Pepper. Now they're adding flavors to the original. Black Raspberry,Strawberry,Cream Soda.

I'm old school. I stick with the original .

Anyone remember RC cola, or Tab?
Gone but not forgotten.
My wife enjoys the Black Raspberry and Strawberry Cream too. Gotta be zero sugar though.

Without Google search I couldn't tell you. Not sure if I have actually drunk sarsaparilla but imagine I probably couldn't tell the difference between that and root beer.

Coffee. It tastes terrible (to me) unless you add something.

I add a shot of cream too. Makes it like a root beer float, if you made it with coffee ice cream.

Faygo was very big in Detroit. I believe that it was the original bottling location. Loved the Red Pop for sure.

I love coffee. Started drinking it when I was a tad. Definitely an addict. Usually drink it black but occasionally add a little creamer and sugar.

Back when I worked overnights (10 at night to 6 in the morning,) I would make myself a liter of CoffTea and drink about half during every shift.

I'd brew coffee with twice the grounds, then when it was finished brewing, added about 6 bags of decaf tea. I'm very sensitive to caffeine and probably shouldn't have it, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm even sensitive to decaf beverages so adding full-caff tea bags to full-caff tea probably would have given me a heart attack.

I'd sip the CoffTea throughout my shift, but to try to balance it out, I'd alternate between that and a big bottle of water.

I grew up in suburbs of Detroit. Everyone calls it 'pop'. I think that 'soda' is more of a southern name. Either way, it's fizzy.

In my never-ending quest to constantly try to tweak my diet, I've realized how much texture (?) plays into my cravings.

I have to have some kind of pop around because sometimes I get strong cravings for something specifically sweet -- and fizzy. It can't be juice, punch, lemonade, or sweetened tea or coffee -- IT HAS TO BE FIZZY, dang it all!

And it's a similar thing for a crunchy and salty, hence my inability to break my lifelong addiction to Lays potato chips (original, thin cut!!)

I've tried making a "healthy" substitute by shredded wheat squares cereal and sprinkling a little salt on them, but yeah...

It's just not the same.

Same here lol, im a Michigander. I moved to Florida, and people had no idea what i was talking about haha. I like pop, its chill. I perfer Dr pepper with way too much ice to the point where its just like water... Im weird like that.

Root beer is pretty cool too. I can't do caffeine so I actually prefer it most of the time.

I love most Frito Lay products. Ruffles rock. Great company. I get that FIZZY craving too. I satisfy my craving by cracking open a bottle of Perrier water. Now that beverage is seriously FIZZY.
