Ecclesiastes 8:15, ‘Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry’
Isaiah 22:13, ‘Let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die.

The whole saying is just an amalgamation of those verses.

Verses that are clear, overt and beyond question against drinking ONE drop.

Heh actually there are verses against drinking even one drop of alcohol (ie: Numbers 6, story of Samson, story of Samuel.) Though it should be noted this is distinctly applicable to the Nazarites.

Can you give it?
A verse that is prescriptive, that clearly says, you cannot drink ONE drop of alcohol.

Yes I can. Keep in mind though as I said this is distinctly applicable to the Nazarites.

Numbers 6:1-4

1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
[SUP]2 [/SUP]Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the Lord:
[SUP]3 [/SUP]He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.
[SUP]4 [/SUP]All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk.



(You can support this also with events in the Bible such as when the angel tells Samson's mom to make him a Nazarite from birth (Judges 13).
 
I'm in the "drink in moderation" camp, but I think that it's very wise to know one's own weaknesses and limitations. I have a friend who had a drinking problem before he came to Christ, and he and I both think that he should avoid alcohol entirely. In fact, I don't drink in front of him, because I don't want to tempt him by accident, or keep alcohol on his mind more than it already is, or let him think that if I can handle it, then so can he. The last time he drank was after he was saved, and it became quite obvious that he wasn't ready to handle alcohol in any capacity.

I know that he, and a few people who had drinking problems before coming to Christ, say that they are tempted to get drunk. Not tempted to drink, or have a taste, but specifically tempted to get drunk. I think it would be wise for someone to avoid alcohol entirely if that was the case for them.



Edit: I'm also a little bit like Timothy, in that I had stomach issues that were helped by beer. :o
1 Timothy 5:23: "No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments."

Youre right, this is only applicable to the Vow of the Nazarites, which means it isn't really applicable to the discussion of "is it a sin for Christians to drink any alcohol". Good find, though. :)

Indeed and agreed. Just pointing out there are verses where for certain people they should not drink even a drop (or for that matter not even eat the husk of grape). Not that it's for all people, but that we should still observe that for some people they are simply not supposed to drink.
 
It's amazing that people who drink say they will never get drunk. In Genesis, Noah was righteous & found favor with God, yet he himself got drunk & passed out in his tent.... just sayin...:rolleyes:

It's amazing that "sipping saints" say that Jesus contributed to the sin of drunkedness of a wedding party by making 120 - 180 GALLONS of alcoholic wine, then say out of the other side of their mouth that Jesus never sinned.

Ok, you've established the fact that it's wrong to stretch the scripture for personal interpretation....let's run with that then.

What I'm hearing is that, according to those that believe it's ok to drink, that Jesus performed a miracle & turned water into alcoholic wine so that those at the feast could get "well drunk" (bible quote).

Let's look at the scriptures to see then what, according to their interpretation, Jesus did.

John 2:6 (NLT) [SUP]6 [/SUP]Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons.

So, Jesus, perfect & Holy as He is, turned ceremonial water to alcoholic wine so that people at the feast could get drunk.

No?!? Here's a wedding feast with sinning Jews, many people, all walks of life there (you know how family is, lol), & Jesus turns ceremonial water into 120 to 180 GALLONS of alcoholic wine! With that much wine, somebody's gonna get drunk, right?

If that is true, this means Jesus contributed to the drunkedness of several people, & since drunkedness is a sin, so is contributing to it. You might as well take a wino up the road so he can get wasted. Contributing to sin is sin.

Now, according to those that believe & tell others Jesus made alcoholic wine to drink, Jesus cannot possibly be the sinless Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world.

IMO, there are "christians"(only God knows), who are doing what's right in their own eyes (happened to Israel), who didn't count the cost of twisting the scripture & made Jesus what the scribes & pharisees have already accused Him of being....a winebibber & a sinner.

If you truly find that "amazing", then I believe you have made the right choice by deciding not to drink.

This thread seems to have morphed into a debate if Jesus turned water into alcoholic wine.
Your perspective is that Christians should not drink alcohol.

Bringing this back on topic, can you provide two or three clear verses where it says Christians should not drink alcohol?

How many people were at the wedding reception at Cana drinking this 120 - 180 gallons of wine. Was it a few or was it hundreds? What would be an appropriate drink to celebrate a wedding? Grape Flavored Kool-Aid? Get serious! By the way this was debated in length in another thread on whether Jesus turned water in wine as clearly stated in scripture or whether this was really grape juice. Even an alchemist can turn water into grape juice, that ain't no big deal.
