Ok I have seen the movie and thought this would make a good topic of discussion. Maybe its better off in the ladies forum but I figured maybe a male POV might be good to consider as well

If you've seen the original, with Lindsey Lohan, or the musical with Renee Rap or the broadway version...basically it's about cliques and being popular and girls bullying each other under the guise of friendship.

so the new girl goes to school where she doesn't know all the rules of how to behave and make friends - she's been homeschooled up to then. Not christian homeschooled but living in Africa homeschooled - and she goes to the US as her parents are now transferred from their antrhropology studies and it's her first day of school and it's a complete culture shock.

Isn't this what it's like when you join a church for the first time, and you are single and on your own? You don't have family or friends already there and it's kind of like sink or swim.

You make friends instantly perhaps as people are curious about the new girl. But how do you navigate the gossip, the cliques and the unwritten rules of social behavior? Unlike in the movie, where Cady Herons breaks the rules of feminism or the Plastics by going out with Regina's ex boyfriend, what happens if you break the rules of the church patriarchy, and unknowingly sabotage your salvation, and perhaps hopes of getting married or making true friends or whatever.

Discuss...

ps. I personally do not know if other christian women have done this, like stolen somebody else's ex, but the movie was also about other things, like changing yourself or being made over to fit in. Is there like a 'Plastics' clique in your church? Did people gossip about you? Have you ever had a friendship failure in church or been taken advantage of?

An example in the bible..just to consider...Hannah is married to Elkanah but she's the second wife and the first wife Penninah is mean to her because she doesn't have children.

It was also kind of seen in Leah and Rachel marriage to Jacob where its Leah who has the children and Rachel is barren. But Jacob loves Rachel first because she is prettier than Leah. It's said that Leah was 'tender eyed' which might have meant she needed glasses.

Or Sarah and Hagar. Sarah is too old to have children, and so uses Hagar her maid as a surrogate. Hagar gives birth to Ishmael, and then Sarah becomes jealous and starts being mean to Hagar, and Hagar runs away.

I believe that God provided for Hagar though.
Yes. The point is Hagar brought Sarah's wrath upon herself.

Genesis16-13.png

Genesis 16 verse 13 ~ Hagar gave this name (El Roi) to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!”

Hagar had the prize (baby) and Sarah didn't. Hagar started to act superior. Sarah then retaliated out of jealousy and was mean to Hagar, driving her away.

I don't think Hagar 'bought it upon herself'. Sarah was the one who suggested Abraham impregnate her! It's not like she offered or had any say in the matter.

guh. Stupid idea. I don't think Hagar got any extra pay out of the deal. Sarah was Hagar's mistress, not the other way round.

I would probably despise Sarah too if she said I had to get pregnant for her! Way to use another person's womb huh.

It's one thing if a surrogate offers, it's clearly another when you have no say and are pretty much forced to otherwise you get fired/don't have a job. Hagar was the maid, the help. The slave!

I'm horrified that people just don't get it. Hagar was treated like trash. But God saw her and had pity on her.

I am reminded of this scene in another movie, Gone with the Wind. I always seem to come back to this movie because observing human behaviour in the characters of Scarlett and Melanie. Melanie is like the most Christian Christian who ever Christianed. So kind and good and never a bad word to say about anybody. She was the kind of person who had not a mean bone in her body.

Scarlett on the other hand, had charm and deceit as her arsenal. She would act nice and then stab you in the back. So the scene if you have watched it, was Scarlett and Rhett after they had married, and now they are rich instead of poverty stricken Scarlett says 'I want everyone who has ever been mean to me to be pea green with envy'
Who was mean to Scarlett?
I am racking my brains to answer this question. I think it was India who had some pious disapproval of Scarlett's outrageous behavior. Scarlett had broken the rules of feminism by stealing away or flirting Charles Hamilton, who was India's beau (?) and she did it again with her second husband Frank Kennedy who was Suellen's beau, her own sister!
Recall Suellen pulled Scarlett's hair and they were fighting over a dress to wear to the bbq. The most ultimate sin of all was when she declared her love for Ashley who was already set to marry Melanie, so Scarlett was jealous and hated Melanie. However she pretended to be best friends with Melanie, while pining for Ashley. Melanie had no idea, or maybe she suspected but chose to ignore it. She became a true friend to Scarlett. They went through the war together and Scarlett helped Melanie birth her baby. Because she promised Ashley.

This movie gets me everytime because even though Scarlett did everything wrong, she had the guts to survive and got through the war. She aspired to be a lady like her mother (who was also kind and good) if she hadn't had to do the things she did to survive.

Yes, she did. She had help from Abraham at the suggestion of Sarah. Probably stems from a lack of patience and trust of God's promise to Abraham.

So Hagar pays for Sarah's impatience..with her own body, and eventual banishment. She should have said no, right?
Stand up to bullies for sure.

I can't imagine Sarah presenting this proposition to Hagar and Hagar going sure I will have sex with your husband so YOU can have a child. I think she was conned into it. Or maybe paid off.

It wouldn't have been out of the goodness of her heart, cos she wasn't best friends with Sarah. She was the maid.

Who was the meanest girl in the Bible?

Martha to Mary?
Miriam? She totally bullied Moses.
I vote Sarah.
Penninah came close though.
Why was it in those days women competed for how many babies they could have? As for sharing a husband - Rachel and Leah - I can't conceive of how that ever worked.

Doesn't that also break the rules of feminism? But it was ok in the Bible?

The ladies that fought over their child and Solomon just answered cut up the baby. Then you can both have it.

Oh yes 😞 I have a sad take to tell . I went into a congregation that was desperate to get me in and baptised . Once I was in everything changed . I was single , 24 , slim , gorgeous and green . The congregation was mostly older people who had been members for generations . It was a patriarchy but I was ok with that and understood why , it was all Bible based . I thought they were all wonderful and was a bit shocked when it got quite chilly in there . Apparently I was offending left right and centre and had no clue , everything from what I wore to how I buttered bread . One elderly lady and one middle aged couple were very nice to me , they were the least liked members of the congregation before I came along 😆 . I left after about 6 years because I met my husband who wasn't a member , after I left , the 3 people that befriended me told me just a couple of the things that were said about me behind my back while I was still a member there . I was genuinely shocked my clothes , my accent everything was ripped apart . I also found out about a few of the affairs that had gone on amongst these good folks 😧 . I have forgiven them all but , I don't think I could go back after knowing what they said about me . They didn't like me then , why should they now ?

Oh Suze
So hard when you know ppl are talking about you behind your back, worse is when they talk about you and they know you are listening anyway.
I have had that - on this forum!
People seem to love saying bad things about me. I don't know, I sometimes feel like some kind of pet monkey or exotic plaything sometimes.

Like Cady in Mean Girls, she already knew she was different, she didn't need to have it shoved in her face. But worse when people pretended to like her and then backstabbed her. So she retaliated. With word vomit.

Mean Girls was based on a NON-FICTION (ie real-life, not made-up) book called Queen Bees and Wannabes. By Rosalind Wiseman

I haven't read this one, actually I should check it out, but the author wrote it based on her experiences in schools and interviewing teenage girl cliques and their inner circles. It is Self-help book written for concerned mothers who experience teen bullying of their daughters.

It was turned into a movie by Tina Fey of SNL (Saturday Night Live, a US comedy sketch show) fame. She also named the characters after people she knew. Like Glen Coco was actually one of her friends.

You go, Glen Coco!

If you know, you know.
The movie has since become a 'cult classic' ie. well loved amongst its ardent fans, and is often quoted. If you haven't seen it, give it a watch. I promise you, it's as hilarious as Clueless was. If you've got teenage daughters, then definitely watch it, for their sakes.

BTW Clueless was based on Emma by Jane Austen. If you don't know who that book and author is...you are as Clueless as Cher Horowitz.
However I am not going to start a thread on Clueless. I am not going to go back to 1995.

Tina Fey's memoir was called Bossypants. I wonder if all mean girls will just grow up to be bossy ladies.
I haven't read Bossypants, but it will be interesting to find out what her take on Mean Girls is, and how it came about, since she wrote the screenplay.
I'd like to know what she was like as a teen, whether she was the bully or the bullied.

As far as I know, Lindsay Lohan/Cady Heron was just 17 when making this movie, and Rachel MacAdams who played Regina was 25 (?) so Rachel had an edge because she was older.

Or maybe Christians don't watch teen movies on here?
I will tell my mean church girl story another time. Because it is eerily similar to what happened in the movie, although I didn't break the rules of feminism.

Exactly. That is called, "bringing it on yourself," since acting superior is considered a provocation.
Whatever.
Love is not easily provoked. 1 Corinthians 13:5

But then again Sarah wasn't a Christian, so she didn't know better.

Magenta seems to like twisting scripture, I notice she does this quite a bit. If there is a bully, she'd take their side.

I heartily disagree, but that's just my opinion.

@Magenta has always been a good friend to me and I am grateful for her presence.

But do carry on, Lanolin, as I know you will.
