Yes, we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit,

who gives us to understand the word of God written,

he does not give authoritative new revelation.

This is incorrect thinking as the Spirit was poured out long before the bible was completed. And yes He does give new revelation to those whom He wills to. Until you can show in scripture where it says He don't. Good luck searching to no avail.

I think they already heard the Word of God from Christ Himself.

Then I guess there was no need for the comforter?

John 14:25"These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

There are over 50 + Commands given by Jesus and or 1050 + New Testament Commands.

http://christianchat.com/bible-discussion-forum/99639-new-testament-commands.html

How would you know about all of them if it wasn't for the Bible?

For even Paul essentially said that what he had written was the Lord's Commandments (1 Corinthians 14:37).

Pardon my butting in but where do you think Paul acquired all those Commandments? Do you think Paul got them all in one day or three? How about the Holy Spirit guided him day in and day out throughout his work along with others who were given the Spiritual gifts.

Did I say Paul acquired all those Commandments?

No, There was need for the comforter. What you wrote shows that

I just look at what you say and it surely appears you are putting the written word which is only in part as scripture says, above the work of the Holy Spirit as if only the written grants you salvation instead of the Spirit working faith in us. You don't have to be able to read to be saved. Just ask Helen Keller.

What leads you to suppose that Helen Keller was saved?

Pitting the Bible vs the Holy Spirit is a false antagonism, just as it is a false antagonism vs the Lord Jesus or God in any sense.

It is self-evident that the Bible is the Word of God.
The sample of your words above, indicates to me that you are not speaking the Word of God.
Do it is not self-evident that your words (even if you allege that they are the Spirit's words) are God's words.
I see know evidence that you have a private pipe-line to God either.

So I shall treasure God's Word in the Bible highly; but remain skeptical as to the worth of what you have to say, as I suppose you will be skeptical about the worth of what I have to say.

You claim to be a Christian, yet do not capitalize Bible or Jesus. Do you confess that Jesus is YHWH who became a man in the flesh?
You claim to be an Ivy League grad, yet you write "no were" for nowhere???

what I can't find as logical or historical is the concept of bible as the only rule of faith

It is self-evident that the Bible is the word of God. But the homework of affirming or denying it is mostly yours, as it is for me mine.

1) the last book in the bible wasn't written until 95ad and the bible wasn't bound and distributed until the 300's and even then only very limited until the advent of the printing press

so what? How does that prove that the Bible is not the only rule?
What does it prove if the various books of the Bible were not bound in one codex until the 300's?
Do you have some proof that Christians have not been proving their doctrine from the Bible throughout history?

2) the Christians in Goa India went 1500 years without a New Testament

What is your proof of all that? Give us two reliable witnesses for every century. Prove there were real Christians there all that time.

3) the bible disputes it in 1 Tim 3:15, (2 Thess. 2:15) to name just a few
Your verses say nothing about the Bible being or not being the only rule of faith after prophecy ceased.

4) no were in the bible does it say what books belong in the bible

"My sheep hear my voice." It is self-evident that the Bible is the Word of God.

5) no were in the bible does it say clearly the bible is all we need

Straw man.

6) jesus didn't write the bible
Who do you mean by uncapitalized "jesus"? Is He the 2nd person of the Trinity, God become man who died on the cross and rose from the dead? How do you know that God is not the author of the Bible?

7) I can't find any of the first Christians supporting it only contradicting it

What is your proof that none of the 1st Christians supported the Bible & rather contradicted it or said it was not a sufficient revelation for salvation and the Christian life.

"The scripture cannot be broken" "It is written."

So we don't have common ground that the Bible is God's word?
If not, then you bear evidence of not trusting Christ as Savior.
Since the sheep hear His voice, if you don't recognize the Bible as God's Word, why would anyone recognize you as a Christian?
Thus I ask you if you died tonight where you would go & how do you know?
If you were at the pearly gates seeking admittance and asked why you should be let in, what would you say?

On the other hand, if you do confess that the Bible is God's Word, and you think there is some other document which is also God's word, bring it forth & prove it is God's word.

It may be observed that since the last NT book, no one has successfully added one page to the Bible.

The Spirit abides with the written word of God because it is divinely inspired or God breathed. God is not in conflict with His own Word.

For I believe that is how God communicates to us. Thru his Word. It is not in conflict with the Lord because that is how He conveys His heart, love, commands, and thoughts to us.

The Holy Spirit and The Word, go hand and hand, you can't have one without the other. The gift was The Holy Ghost. The New Testament along with Old Testament is The Word Of God.

Yes but that in itself doesn't make it all of Gods word, only the written part.

If you will take note of my original post in the Sola Scriptura thread, I made reference (with a link) to other written works of God that the Lord chose to not be a part of the cannon of Scripture we have today.
