Today was a busy day, so on the way back home I stopped at a Subway Sandwich Shop to get something to eat. I was greeted by a nice young lady who promptly made my sandwich then went to the register to collect payment. This is where the trouble began.
  • She keyed in my order and told me that it would be 9.74.
  • I gave her a twenty which she placed into the register and shut the door.
  • She then ask if there was anything else that I needed
  • I told her yes, I need my change back. I gave you a twenty dollar bill!
  • She could not get the register open and had to make a call to do so.
  • The person on the other end of the conversation had to tell her how much money I was owed.
  • I think it is very sad that a person can go through school and yet not get a proper education.
Have you ever experienced the same problem?

Oh,yes. Last year while visiting back home.

What's even worse than your Subway experience ?

Imagine you're buying something that requires you to be 18 y.o.
And the cashier is not yet 18 themselves. Then, you give them your cash to pay for the total order, they enter your cash amount into the register and still short you your change.

Why? Because I asked a manager afterward.

Two cashier's,one of them being mine, are immigrants.
Who don't know how to process American currency!
Noooo. I'm not kidding. I've got a better sense of humor than that.

Walmart hires from 16 y.o on up. They get tax credits that include hiring migrants. Apparently knowing what they're doing at the position they apply for is a mere formality.

Are you telling us you bought a ten dollar sandwich and was not willing to give your server a ten dollar tip?

What is this world coming to? LOL

And wow, you still use cash!!! Haha.

I remember when I used to do that (use cash). Sometimes when something was however many dollars
and eighty-five cents, I would give them the bills and then a dime, and the cashier would look at me
blankly, so I would explain that I wanted a quarter back instead of a dime and a nickel. They would
still be stupefied. Yes. Education is not what it used to be!

This is the type of thing that I see most often - because, I will do it at times to have less change in my pocket - it just thoroughly confuses them... :(

I can say something from the cashier's point of view! I have done the same thing working at the register and it's so embarrassing! Usually it was when I was distracted or had a lot on my mind. Thankfully I knew how to open the cash drawer and was able to laughingly and apologetically give them their change. And they were always understanding. But oooh my face was flaming!

Once I was ordering for my family at a local McDonalds. This particular store was one that taught employees to squeeze the bottom of the fry box when filling it so that it would only be half full or less. There were a few times when the box was so empty that it was beyond ridiculous and I asked them to add some fries into the container.

Anyway, one day their credit system wasn't working so they were only taking cash. A young blonde took my order and had no idea how to give change. I kept telling her what she was giving me was incorrect. finally she just grabbed a bunch of money and shoved it at me. As I walked back to the play area where the family was I thought "Ah, a little justice for all those orders of fries that have been way short."

that sounds like america. america has the worst education system ever. & even worse, the more $ given to assist education, the dumber the kids get!!!!! it's a political system. also, education is spread out over too long a period. 1 time, i asked a 22 year old girl to read a number that had a dollar sign in front of it. she said, "a 2 with 6 zero's after it"!!!!!!!!

Yup - My wife always tries to give change so if a bill is $8.74 she'll give 'em $10.74, and expect $2 back. and about half the time the cashier has NO IDEA how to handle that mathematically.

That register should have displayed the amount due, the amount tended, and the balance in change.

She probably was new at the job so I would give her a pass. The school system probably does not place an emphasis on math calculations but rely on calculators. I use calculators too because it is easier, faster, and less chance of a mistake.

Of course, I figured in my head in a couple seconds that you were due $10.26 in change.

What size and kind of sub did you get? It's been awhile since I had a sub from Subway.

The store manager should have been terminated by training employees to squeeze the fry box to short the customers their fries.

OK, so I go to that particular McDonald's, order a senior coffee for 87 cents, give her a 5 and get a 10 back (or possibly a 20).

Sounds like a good deal for sure.

Yes. At a movie house. Cant be precise on prices but covered the bill with I think was a $20 and the girl couldnt make change. The manager had to help her. Its not new, this happened 15 years ago or so.

In the Long Beach Public School system, we were taught, in my case that is, biology, geometry, social studies, history, French with a language laboratory, and much much more.
This was so, and continued for some time after I graduated HS in 1962 in order to enter the USAF.
Later, after an honorable discharge, I attended the University, helped greatly by the G"I Bill.
I know this has not been the case for many since the 1970-s, and I know how it came about. Anyone with a "lick of sense" knows why.

2024 Christmas time, Dollar Tree...

I forget the exact total, but I gave the young cashier cash and my change back I think was going to be $1 and a few cents. ( I can't remember now)
I silently watched the girl struggle to count the change. Now I think the age for working at Dollar Tree, at least around here, is 17 or 18; she was pretty close to that.
She finally typed a number into the register, but I could tell by her demeanor that something wasn't right. She picked up her store phone and paged for the manager while just handing me back a random amount (which was not my correct change, I was given my $1, but the change was a few cents off). I was very patient with her (the line was getting longer and there was maybe only one other lane open... maybe) and the manager was very patient with her. We got it all corrected.
Now, here is a catch, she was going based on what the machine told her was change, and based on the numbers she typed in it was correct. EXCEPT what she typed in was not the correct amount which I gave her...

The manager and I were chit chatting as this was resolved and stepped aside to continue.
I worked as a cashier at a Dollar Tree when I was around that age and can recall some of the struggles (hehe, I used to give balloon weights out for free  . When I started working and was trained on balloons no one ever explained they were separate, and all the times I had bought balloons from various Dollar Trees I was never charged so... oops, so sorry Mr. Manager who realized this, and corrected me).

Well, as the nice manager and I were chit chatting I explained to her what I observed as the cashier was struggling just to count the change I had given her. The manager explained that she was aware when hiring this girl that the girl has this struggle, but since it was the busy season she had to hire workers knowing she would be called to assist at registers whenever cash was involved. She explained how she was helping the girl with her money counting struggles by using slower parts of the day to play some learning games and help teach this. She went on to tell me that this is what she is seeing A LOT of with these kids/young adults just coming out of school, that most of them have NO CLUE how to handle and count money. Since they have grown up likely not seeing much cash used and are not being taught these basic math skills in public schools.
She said as a manager she finds it hard hiring since there are not a lot of folks who are older and know how to count money applying for this job, and the ones coming in to apply are younger and don't have basic math skills.
