As occasions arrive where we have cookouts, parties, and family dinners, it is sad that many of these will waste perfectly good food.

Wings with one bite taken thrown away. Buckets of potato salad in the trash. Rice, burgers, cake, etc. that didn't get finished.




We are blessed in America. There are so many people who will go hungry and are going hungry during these times.

Please do not throw away the edible food. At the very least, if it is still good and you don't need it, give it to someone who needs it.

You could even make an "Extra/leftover food available" sign for your yard.

No doubt this is a concern. Sadly our society even encourages it. In Some cities at least in the USA there are laws that prevent you from gifting leftovers to the homeless populations. People in the past have actually been fined for providing street side homeless leftover thanksgiving meals from home. Everyone is so worried about lawsuits today that it hinders charity and generosity. It’s so sad. ☹️

We don't have a lot of homeless hanging out on the street here in southwest Tennessee, but in this house we don't do throwing food away. The fridge is a wonderful invention and leftovers are tomorrow's lunch. I'd rather eat leftovers from real food than a fast "food" burger any day of the year.

That Thanksgiving turkey evolves into wonderous and varied meals after Thanksgiving. We never threw away food unless the fridge were to conk out, but that never happened.

This is a great post. I find it difficult or impossible to give leftover food to strangers. That is sad but reality. My answer is to be frugal and avoid wastefulness when possible. I even taught my children that they eat all of what they take. There are very few leftovers tossed in my home; we even make soup and stock from leftover poultry carcasses.

I hope everyone is supporting a food bank somewhere in their local communities. Many churches run small food pantries and there are a few secular organizations doing likewise. The creator gave us a world where hunger need never to exist.

Oh, that turkey!! After thanksgiving , and making a couple of casseroles. I eat turkey for breakfast lunch and dinner, YUMMY! Seriously, i love it!!!

When we had school lunches in one school the leftovers would be taken to another - Im meaning the ones that didnt get eaten not the half eaten ones.

The half eaten ones would go onto compost or the children would save them to take them home to have as afternoon or even dinner.
Whenever theres a pot luck or roast what doesnt get eaten gets taken home not chucked out, and people would eat it the next day. Even bones (except chicken) would be given to dogs.

bones can be made into soup.
birdc can be fed its just if you chucking edible food out you on,y making a feast for rats, seagulls, ants etc. At least have a worm farm or give your leftovers to the pigs, chickens or cats if you cant save it and give it to someone whos hungry.

Otherwise people will just go dumpster diving. Thers also storehouses for food that you can leave non perishable food.

In the Bible it says to invite the lame blind and homeless to your feasts. They cant repay you but God sees and will repay you.

I dont understand the wastefulness of some families. I am hoping that is not a practice in churches either.

However, sometimes the portions when eating outside are large, but not big enough for a second serving either. I try to at least eat the "good stuff" in these instances.

Not a lot of homeless where I reside in northeast Tennessee either. If you're homeless and want to eat you need to go where the food is, or/and drugs - alcohol. Same thing with money, if you need money you got to go where the money is.

The fridge is a wonderful invention too. Not much into leftovers though, unless it is pot roast.

I try to keep the food waste to a minimum.

I have found that turkey leftovers are problematic.

Indeed and thank you for bringing up this topic. I mention it frequently because US is also the biggest waste producer in terms of food.
Because there is so much abundance here, people disregard a lot of things as trash including food.
Not sure if this behavior can be fixed but thank you for bringing it up.

about every three months I might have enough for trash pickup. About as minimalist as I can be , I hope.

Interesting you should mention that one. I have given this verse a lot of thought.

Jesus made that bread and fish. I assume He could make more whenever He wanted. But he took care to mention that they should take care not to waste any of it.

I make sourdough bread, sometimes 30-loaf batches. I don't think anything about giving a loaf or six to someone. I have more, and I can always make more.

But Jesus said to take care to not waste what He had made.

At church there was bread leftover from communion, actually a whole bag full and I asked where it went the elder said he took it home to feed his hens.
