What's the difference when the action is the same (praying in the Spirit)? A bunch of people edifying themselves surely must be a horror if one person doing so is bad.

... or just focusing on one particular facet without reference to the previous chapters.

Tell me something: if "edify" is bad when applied to the individual, why is it not bad when applied to the church? Nothing else suggests a negative connotation.

Edify is always positive when used in Scripture. Imposing a 21st-century English idiomatic nuance of meaning on a 1st-century Greek document is anachronistic at best and ridiculous at worst.
I always figured Paul called tongues the least of the gifts because it is the only one that builds up the user as opposed to the rest of the gifts which go thru the user to build up someone else. But it is also the only gift Paul said he wished we all would do, so there HAS to be some benefit in it.

And then there's that charge DO NOT FORBID them. That alone should be enough to stop cessationists in their tracks, but alas, they apparently know more than Paul did.

That is a good message Rickyz, thank you for sharing.

'Greek' hah? How convenient. What about 'these works'? as far as English is concerned, preaching the gospel can never be referred to as 'these works'.
Either way, cessation is real, if Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead and you can not do it yet are a member of the church that believes, then it all ceased. Do not point someone else, i'm talking about you.
and you're living proof ;)

yet, Jesus said GREATER WORKS

so what are the GREATER WORKS???

if the works are not the same works, but GREATER WORKS, then what are they?

My comments are just fine.
Again, no one needs to learn Greek to understand anything otherwise we should be having a command in the bible itself; "thou shall learn Greek.."
well good job someone did or you would have to study it too

unbelievable!

you continually paint yourself into a corner then change the subject (ie. red herring) to get out of it

thou needest to smarten up :cautious:

+++Rediscover praying in Tongues if you have lapsed. Even a few minutes a day will help open your spirit, increase revelation in the Word, and strengthen you...
Every one that prays prays in tongues… Tongues are just a language.

Well Paul did write 1 Cor 13:8 under inspiration of the Holy Spirit. So you may wish to dig into the context so you don't create a pretext.

My goodness... if three chapters focused on the gifts of the Spirit isn't enough context for you, no amount will be.

Works - healing the blind and deaf/ healing the lepers/ driving out demons/ raising the dead/ many many miracles
And then He says "whoever believes in Him will do these things and even greater things.."

Means- any individual believing in Him will heal the blind and deaf/ heal the lepers/ drive out demons/ raise the dead/ many many miracles in His name.
No excuses - 'works' does not mean preaching the gospel and Greek or not, in whatever context, no one can purport to preach a greater gospel than Jesus. This was a promise to the disciples and they did greater works as attested by the scriptures.

Wrong.
1 Cor 12 says gifts were for the common good, including tongues.
1 Cor 14 gives details of how to use tongues to edify others and any gift that edifies others was not to be forbidden but Paul himself in that very chapter was forbidding something- it is called self edification, there's no love in it because other people are not benefiting.

Jesus said to pray in private and not like a hypocrite

so, when the Bible speaks of praying in the spirit, you don't make a show

so you can pray whenever and wherever and no one 'uses' tongues

it's a shame you don't employ yourself in some edification by agreeing with what scripture states rather than attacking it

there is no verse anywhere in scripture that forbids tongues...Paul gave instruction on how a believer should behave in a congregation and then he said DO NOT NOT FORBID TONGUES

you must have a very very bad translation

You many when they see the least or greater comment of Paul don't understand any gift from the Holy Spirit is a Good gift. One understanding when Paul says desire the best gifts means the one that is most effective for what you need to edify the body.

Pray in private and dont make a show of it! I agree! There is abuse of the gifts going on in charismatic churches no doubt!

1Co 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
1Co 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

1. I never said people should not pray in private
2. Speaking in tongues is not praying in the spirit - you have no idea what a spirit is and you also don't know what a prayer is. The spirit is the mind and a prayer is a need. You can choose to make known your needs by speaking (using an organ called a tongue in your mouth) and this should be directed to those that have ears. A prayer to God is not necessarily spoken, God searches the heart/spirit of a man and He knows your needs before you even speak out.

Saying that speaking in tongues is praying in spirit (mind) is an oxymoron.
3. Anything that is in your mind is what we call understanding, even if it is falsehood. Praying in the spirit only means understanding and has nothing to do with any muscles.

there is no verse anywhere in scripture that forbids tongues...Paul gave instruction on how a believer should behave in a congregation and then he said DO NOT NOT FORBID TONGUES

There's no verse that forbids tongues but a whole chapter (1 Cor 14) forbids gibberish.

Simple. If works are; healing the blind and deaf/ healing the lepers/ driving out demons/ raising the dead/ many many miracles
Greater works must be; healing the blind and deaf/ healing the lepers/ driving out demons/ raising the dead/ many miracles on a bigger scale.

What it can't be is speaking gibberish and hiding behind Greek to redefine 'greater' and is certainly not preaching the gospel.

Why, then, does I Corinthians 13 say that tongues will cease when that which is perfect (God's written word) comes? If God has already given us his word on the subject, then that is all there is to it.
