I worked at a psychiatric hospital for 7 years. I saw people who had pretty intense mental illnesses, such as paranoid schizophrenia, extreme bipolar, (in kids) reactive attachment d/o, and others. One of the first things done on admission from the ER is to draw blood--there are many physical problems that can cause disordered thoughts and emotions (hypo/hyperthyroidism, diabetic crises, electrolyte imbalances). There are many factors that play into mental illnesses, and sometimes it is medical (chemical imbalances), spiritual (I have seen some patients who I was convinced were being influenced by demons), learned behavior, self-induced (drugs such as alcohol, meth, pot), sometimes because of physical trauma to the head, and/or a combination of these. Sometimes it's short-lived (like a patient I saw who had prednisone-induced psychosis and once the prednisone cleared out of her system, she returned to normal. During her psychotic episode, I walked into her room and she thought that I--short, chubby, blonde, female-was Hitler, so she tried to strangle me). Sometimes it's long-term and sometimes it is a life-long struggle.

Just as with any other illness, there is a level of self-responsibility in managing the symptoms but there are also times when it simply flairs out of control. God can, and sometimes does, provide miraculous healing; He has also provided therapists, doctors and medications that can help us manage these chronic problems that are all a result of sin entering the world. To answer another poster, yes, God can and does work through therapists, some of whom are psychologists. My Dad is a marriage and family therapist, who is first and foremost a Christian; he has worked with many couples who were on the brink of divorce, helped many an individual deal with past trauma and break destructive patterns.

My point? Mental illness and the treatment of it should not cause you to doubt God any more than the existence and treatment of illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, autism, Alzheimer's and anything else that you can think of.

Mit,
This is psychology in action. Only a small part, and from only one of hundreds of angles, and not a "Bible" word uttered... despite almost half the talk zeroing straight in on Biblical Concepts.

Willie that's just men talking to boys ...we do it all the time with our children....and youth ... now if some classify that as psychology ..ok ..but many use this term to promote ideas that are clearly just silly and ungodly ...if you guys have found something in this area of study to help others and its based on truth...then I hope you increase in your work

Love the line..."Tell me how to wipe out prejudice....I'll settle for the prejudices that are just inside you". Lol

I have been contemplating psychology and the existence of spiritual things (God, Jesus, Satan, guilt, temptation, etc.). It seems these two work against each other, such as bad thoughts coming from Satan can also be described as a chemical imbalance. Psychology can be used to explain pretty much everything that happens to us mentally. Satan tempting us through thoughts can be explained as intrusive thoughts.

A question I have been asking myself to help me understand yet I cannot wrap my head around it is why wouldn't God work through psychology? Is our mind designed to work in a way that allows us to experience spiritual things?

I am unable to establish any conclusions in this matter. I feel my belief in God and my need for Him being shaken. A lot of people come to know Christ when they are at the end of their rope, or when in psychological distress. Is it ok for people to hit rock bottom so they call on God for help? If people are psychologically healthy do they even have a need for God?

All men are 3 part. Spirit,soul/mind,and body.
No matter if saved or heathen, they are 3 part.

The heathen walks in darkness and is void of heavenly matters. He is mentally Centered.

A born again believer is spiritually centered and his spirit is the resident of the Holy Spirit.

God is Spirit. The human mind can't process the things of the spirit. Those things are beyond reason. They make no sense naturally.

No its what Gods says....and I find too much conflict in what some call psychology and biblical truth.

Like what? We probably agree that drugs are overprescribed but we probably don't agree that there are cases where they are needed. Aside from that....how is learning to think better with a biblical worldview somehow "psychobabble" in your world? How is using practical life examples or word pictures unacceptable for remembering them so that you can practice them in real world situations? How is learning better communication skills with your spouse, kids, mom, dad, coworkers or that jackass across the street who just hates you for no other reason than to hate you, voodoo? How is learning how to better care for your own soul and spirit and body with Godlike thinking and attitudes psychobabble and even worse...evil? I understand where you are coming from but it's an extreme viewpoint and one that isn't reflective of the attitude of most here commenting on this subject.

What in the world do you think Psychology IS? It is, basically, just talking... then some listening, and some more talking. Do you have the idea that Psychologists and Psychiatrists chant some "magic spells", or something and people somehow change into princes from frogs?

But the mind and spirit are continual in flux as to who is making the decisions...even in the saved individual.

No kidding. On one hand though I can see where he is coming from. There are many who just want the pill...the easy fix and have no desire to change or be well.

They do indeed have value.

Some of their council is profitable.

Most of it offers only the unveiling of the problem.

I think it often goes to just treating the symptom. They just run em through like cattle...here...take more of this and less of that...or was it less of this and more of that...oh crap....I forgot....anyway just take this and should feel better. Lol....I think there is a lot of that that goes on as well.

What do I think it is? a bunch of nonsense ... you say you have learned things that help others ..ok

I can post the definition of these terms..and its more than just honest talking and its clearly often contrary to biblical truth.

Dear sister,

All Undue Anxieties Dismissed. When men go forth to their daily toil, as when they engage in prayer; when they lie down at night, and when they rise in the morning; when the rich man feast in his palace, or when the poor man gathers his children about the scanty board, each is tenderly watched by the heavenly Father. No tears are shed that God does not notice. There is no smile that He does not mark.

If we would but fully believe this, all undue anxieties would be dismissed
. Our lives would not be so filled with disappointment as now; for everything, whether great or small, would be left in the hands of God, who is not perplexed by the multiplicity of cares or overwhelmed by their weight. We should then enjoy a rest of soul to which many have long been strangers.---Steps To Christ page 86.

Christ Has Power to Invigorate and Restore
. And while Christ opens heaven to man, the life which He imparts opens the heart of man to heaven. Sin not only shuts us away from God but destroys in the human soul both the desire and the capacity for knowing Him. All this work of evil it is Christ's mission to undo. The faculties of the soul, paralyzed by sin, the darkened mind, the perverted will, He has power to invigorate and to restore. He opens to us the riches of the universe, and by Him the power to discern and to appropriate these treasures is imparted.---Education page 28, 29

Either God or Satan Controls
. Stan takes control of every mind that is not decidedly under the control of the Spirit of God. Letter 57, 1895.---Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers page 79.

Some Books Confuse the Mind. Many of the books piled up in the great libraries of earth confuse the mind more than they aid the understanding. Yet men spend large sums of money in the purchase of such books, and years in their study, when they have within their reach a Book containing the words of Him who is the Alpha and Omega of wisdom. The time spent in a study of these books might better be spent in gaining a knowledge of Him whom to know aright is life eternal. Those only who gain this knowledge will at last hear the words, "Ye are complete in Him" (Colossians 2:10)--- Word of Counsel (pamphlet) (1903) Counsels On Health page 369

Confused Understanding. When the Word of God is laid aside for books that lead away from God and that confuse the understanding regarding the principles of the kingdom of haven, the education given is a perversion of the name. Unless the student has pure mental food, thoroughly winnowed from the so-called higher education, which is mingled with infidel sentiments, he cannot truly know god. Only those who cooperate with heaven n the plan of salvation can know what true education in its simplicity means."--- Counsels to Parents, Teachers and Students. Page 15

How you gonna fix it?

No kidding. On one hand though I can see where he is coming from. There are many who just want the pill...the easy fix and have no desire to change or be well.

True. And likewise, does, say... God, change and become something bad if there are people who want to just "say a prayer" and from only that, become "Christians?" Your heart has to be in ANY change...... you have to want it, and believe in it happening.

This was all very interesting. Please excuse me I have some studying to do.!
