katiepea,

what is love? who defines love? who sets the standard for love? how did you ever come to know what love is?

if we dont have someone that defines what love is, then love itself is defined out of ones perspective. heh, and not every would one would have the same definition of love.

yes seriously, there are too many inconsistencies in todays version of the bible that it reflects more of ideas than anything literally... this is especially true when you study other religions, like i have, and find that large portions of the bible are nearly word for word taken from other religions that existed 1000's of years before it. so i wouldn't take anything too literally. and if you love someone, it's ok to have sex with them, period. if you go to hell for loving someone then send me to hell now please.

I love my mom (and others) but I won't ever have sex with her.

you are precisely right, and i'm very glad to see someone realizes that love is an individuals choice and not god's. very impressed. we are all here to love each other, and not to obey rules written for people 2000 years ago that have 0 implications in our life. if love is defined by marriage, marriage is simply defined by law, and law is defined by man, so i don't see the point of marriage being a significant deciding factor as to whether or not you should have sex with someone. if you want to pull your morality from the bible and say 'well the bible says you should wait until marriage' well that was clearly to implicate that you should not be sleeping around with everyone and to respect others as well as yourself. marriage is a technicality, not a rule.

and your sources are?.....

yes, ofcourse people like us dont read and study other religions like you do now. We blindly follow Christianity now. Oh yes. people like Dr Ravi Zacharias, Dr Gary Habermas,Dr. William Lane Craig are just uninformed Christians now are they?

We're here to live life according to God's word, loving our neighbor as ourselves along the way not have sex with them.

If the Bible has 0 implications in our lives, why is it still around today, after thousands of years? It's so unimportant

Don't diss the Bible just because you don't follow/agree with it.

Katiepea has likely done no research further than the movie 'Zeitgeist'.

just know that i'm only speaking from a perspective of: i truly want everyone to love each other, and that sometimes the logistics of religion, well often times, completely stunt progress for either side, and that progress is the only way to save humanity. even if it leads to our demise, which the bible says, it's still progress and i believe it should be embraced. i don't think anyone is dumb for making those decisions, i do however believe that they reflect realistic trends occurring and while clearly just sleeping with strangers isn't going to make you smarter, i think it shows that on a measurable scale, people who are willing to make decisions for themselves tend to be smarter and i would assume happier.

i never implied anything hence I can neither be right or wrong. I simply asked you some questions, which went unanswered.

anyways, everything you say here will ultimately point back to why we follow the bible? And then there are even more questions such as -:

1) Did Jesus really live
2) was JESUS really resurrected
3) the authenticity of the bible
4) the historical accuracy of the bible

to me, if Jesus did live and he was resurrected, I think we have very good reasons as to why we follow the bible.

My choosing to abstain is out of intelligence, I have chosen not to sleep with whomever I feel like at the time, out of a "one night love-experience", because I am aware that it is much healthier, to abstain from sex until marriage, and to practice sexual fidelity. A marriage will also mean much more, if the "first time" is shared. I know this from watching the marriages of my family last, and continue to last. While many around me who have not practiced this, fall apart.

Intelligence is something I value highly, you should be able to tell that through the way I write my responses. I can not say that I have any accurate measure of my intelligence, or others, but I can say, that conservatism does not ultimately lead to stupidity. Stupidity knows no boundary, it does not come in colors, red, blue, republican, democrat, liberal, or conservative... Stupidity is everywhere.

well thats the never ending debate isn't it, obviously neither side of those questions can ever be answered outside of opinion, at least not right now. i think that the lesson of the bible is one of importance regardless of it's accuracy. to me the bible reads like a tool created for a set of guidelines for a society much worse and of less hope than our current one, however, the message of love is timeless. i certainly wouldn't ever be afraid of my actions taking me to hell for something as little as sleeping with someone before marriage, especially considering that all sin is equal and that sleeping with someone would equate murder, but mostly because that doesn't make you a bad person. i simply cannot bring myself to believe that you're going to go to hell because you slept with someone before marriage, and while the bible says 'even a good man won't get into heaven' that is implying that not all good men have faith. so for me on a personal level, having faith in mankind is the same thing as faith in jesus, and hope for all of us.

what if you don't ever want to be married? i've been in a committed relationship for 15 years, and we have no plans to get married, for a lot of reasons. we are, however, most definitely sexually exclusive to each other and love each other very much, our relationship is not "one night love-experience" what we share is real love. unlike the marriage i had that failed, which was never love, but we were married ... and yet it felt so much worse than what i have now.

If you feel it is the right thing for you, more power to you. I have an aunt and "half-uncle", they are in what legally is called a "Common Law Marriage". There is no certificate, but all possessions are shared. As to why my aunt has not married, I imagine it is a result of her first marriage. From my understanding it didn't end well.

If I do not marry, then I will simply die a virgin. It is not a choice I have made based on the bible, but a personal choice; however, I do not have to worry about that.

katiepea,

"actually i'm in my 8th year of religious history studies at UCLA, but speaking of blind accusations"

Seriously Katiepea, you think you are qualified and you may be, so that gives you the confidence to come here and start bashing the bible? I think its sly in a way.

I would rather you debate a christian scholar of history and religion such as yourself and believe me, there are plenty out there. Try to flex your umm religious knowledge with them. who knows, there might even be one lurking around here somewhere.

Point is I would not go to a jeweler and start blabbering about the chemical and geological details of a gemstone simply because they dont have the time to know. The jewelers already got his hands full trying to design, make good jewels and to sell it. Why would they care how, why when where and by whom a gemstone was formed? they only need to know its a natural gemstone certified by a gemologist. pfft.

i'm sorry that you took my comments like "the lesson of the bible is important" and "the bible is timeless" as slander, that is most certainly not what i intended.

i'm pretty sure the bible also says very clearly that the topic of god should at all times be up for discussion and debate and you should definitely question all of it.

Discussing a sensitive subject for some people. Many people are easily offended. I personally am hard to offend. I do think his post probably wasn't the best to put up. It also contradicts itself a bit.

Marriage is what you make it.

awww come on now Katiepea who said I was offended. I was simply saying you should debate other christian scholars because you will be able to have a more constructive debate with them. Oh and you did be surpirsed how many christians out there are quite well versed with other religions, history and philsophy. I don't know how they do it but kudos to all of em ;)

My dear, if this offends you then that is your choice. The people in Jesus times were IDENTICAL to the people in our time. The bible is the timeless word of God our instruction in life. Choose to accept it or choose to reject it but to state that its no longer relevant would be only because you choose to live life in rejection to what you have been convicted of within its pages. The Holy Spirit within convicts us when we are acting contrary to Gods will. We have the Bible to know God, we have the Holy Spirit to convict & remind us of Gods will in our life. We can justify our behavior by saying these are modern times but sexual desire is the same now as its ever been. Oh btw I dont stand in judgement of you personally as I lived with my husband & said the exact same words you've said in the past, I'm correcting you in your inaccurate statement that the bible is no longer relevant. Marriage is a contract between you, your spouse & God... you say you are commited I believe you & thats between you, your bf & God, but the relevance of Gods word... well that is Absolute.
