If by chance Harry had actually succeeded to the throne, he would have been King Henry the 9th.

His name sake, the 8th Henry, changed the rules and pretty much founded the Church of England. To allow for divorce, instead of killing/beheading his wives when they couldn't bear him any (male) heirs. Otherwise he would have had to keep a lot of mistresses, and there was the pesky rule about only having one wife at a time. This is so the heirs could be legitimate, and inherit the throne.

This is why Diana thought if she married Prince Charles, he would never be able to divorce her (or kill/behead her) if she bore him an heir. But look what happened. She could not tolerate him having a mistress, and thought it was being dishonest, because he was treating Camilla like his wife and not her. He loved Camilla and fell out of love with Diana.

That had to hurt.
So yea. Drama. Church. Faithfulness. It's all being played out here. And it's ongoing, and affects everyone who lives in the UK and the Commonwealth, as they are still figureheads, rulers of nations and defenders of the faith. They have a lot of land and wealth at their disposal, though the Queen famously started paying taxes after her castle burned down.

If anyone had read the Book of Esther, you may see some parallels in the way the King treated his Queen(s). Queen Vashti had enough and didn't want to be paraded around like a clotheshorse, and Esther wasn't allowed to speak out, until she saw what was going on and risked her life for her people. That took courage, immense courage.

Meghan to me is like the Queen Esther figure, she spoke out when it was dangerous for her to do so, on behalf of her people, who'd been hurt and living in poverty after being enslaved for so long and used as tools for colonisation.

Like Esther, a lot of people didn't know that she was half African American, and assumed she was like them, pure 'white'. It must have galled her when people started slurring against her race/people and with all these microaggressions to make her feel like an outsider and not important.

Well she wasn't beheaded for treason as she might have been in the olden days, just exiled, though it was her choice and was quite happy to do so, but not without speaking out first.

Virginia Guiffre as one of the many many concubines/girls in the harem of Prince Andrew, also had the courage to speak out against the bad behaviour of the Royals and rich and powerful men. In doing so she stood up to them about the abuse she and many other young girls suffered at the hands of men.

Now you may not like these women personally and find them 'unclassy' for exposing dirty laundry, but like Diana it needed to be said. Because women can only tolerate being treated as chattels or cattle for so long.

And if you think Jacinda Ardern and Taylor Swift are evil witches for having compassion AND speaking out against injustices, then well we know what side you are on and have sympathy with. The oppressors, most of which happen to be white and male.

The white man's burden is real. They have to atone for what they did and keep doing to everyone, thats why there's this whole 'white supremacy' attitude. In Australia, they got their act together and apologised to the indigenous people for all the atrocities they committed against them. There is a national Sorry Day. Its not that hard to say sorry and ask forgiveness is it??

Like Leah, Diana felt if she had his children she could make Charles love her, but he only had eyes for Camilla (or Rachel) and she couldn't do anything about it.
But guess what Leah's sons were in the Royal lineage and Rachel's were not.

Moral of the story? Actually am not sure but God will work it out somehow.
 
egad sorry Princess Royal Anne, but your memoir, Riding through my Life, was kinda boring for anyone not into horses.

Just like Spare was kinda boring for anyone not into the army. It just went on for pages and pages about that. Being a war hero/soldier or Olympic champion can only take you so far.

What else can you accomplish with your life of immense privelige, for the good of your nation and people..
Not everyone can participate in 3-day eventing or Polo or Invictus games. But each to their own I guess.

Fergie was into self-help and navel gazing after her divorce
Diana was into humanitarian efforts after hers

Andrew was into young girls with no clothes on, so maybe a book by him wouldn't be a good idea.
 
Haven't heard much from the Spare lately..but in the book I was reading about former Prince Andrew, at one time he was a 'spare' too.

Being the second and favourite son of the late Queen - so the lore goes.

Anne was skipped because she was just a girl.

The Queen's sister, Margaret, was kind of treated like the spare to her sister, but not really --she was never given a good education or grounding on the affairs of the state, so she ended up being like the entertainer of the family. She couldn't marry her first love, a divorcee..and ended up marrying a royal photographer, which was a disastrous marriage. She had two children but ended up divorced. Then she went out with her toyboy.

All these royal family dynamics remind me of this series of books Sweet Valley High. In it are twin sisters, Elizabeth and Jessica. Elizabeth is the sensible older one, and Jessica is the wild younger one (by 4 minutes). In the book they are both identical, blonde and beautiful. But wildly different in temperment.
Elizabeth is always rescuing Jessica when she gets into trouble (and she gets into a whole heap!) Elizabeth has a steady boyfriend, Jessica dates around.
Elizabeth is the editor of the school newspaper, and gets good grades. Jessica is a member of the snobby Unicorn Club, kind of like Mean Girls, except they all wear purple instead of pink, and set the fashion trends of the school. She doesn't care too much about her grades, its more about popularity.

They have an older brother, Stephen, but he's kind of in the periphery to all the drama. Their parents are wealthy, dad is a lawyer, mum is an interior decorator. They never seem to want for anything, so can afford the whole Valley Girl lifestyle. In the world of Sweet Valley, Lila Fowler is the richest girl in school and she's treated as the royal Queen Bee.

The book series, Sweet Valley High went on for over 150 books. So if you thought the royal British family saga was ongoing with screeds and screeds written about them, it was nothing compared to the Sweet Valley Twins. And they stayed 16 the entire time. Well for that series anyway. There were younger and older spinoffs.

The common plot twist is that people got confused between Elizabeth and Jessica because they looked alike, and so Jessica could sometimes get away with things when she was pretending to be Elizabeth and vice versa.
 
Elizabeth and Margaret were often dressed alike when they were young. And they looked similar. Four years difference. Elizabeth was her dad's Pride, Margaret was his Joy.

William and Harry look completely different from each other. Only 2 years difference between heir and spare. William was his dads, the heir, born to be King, Mummy Diana took care of Harry, the spare.

They are kind of like Jacob and Esau in reverse. William is the balding, stay at home Jacob, while Esau Harry is the hairy wild one.
Younger Jacob got the birthright, (actually stole it) Older Esau didn't care for his. Well they were twins. Jacob was only younger by a few minutes, he was grabbing Esaus heel when he was born.

God had decreed that two nations would be born fighting each other in the womb. It probably would not have happened had they been born joined at the hip, like Siamese twins.
 
No news about the Royals today.
As it's nearly Mothers day, you'd think maybe there would be some coverage about Princess Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, HRH.

The last Mothers day (is it celebrated on a different month in the UK?) or Mothering Sunday as it's called or the one before, she made the headlines for publishing a doctored photo of herself and her children.
This was a huge deal because the Royals are not meant to be fake. If they are fake they cannot be trusted, the entire Monarchy would collapse, and it would ruin Britain's reputation.

Then they would have to be vassals of the USA. Heaven forbid!
 
Sunday news must be desperate, they reported on ex-Royal wife Fergie.
The news that she was going out with P diddy, an infamous rap star, and that they met in Epstein's sex trafficking ring. Huh

I don't think anyone really needs to know this, but it was in the news, so it must be important.

Mister Windsor, if you are reading this, you must reign your ex-wife in as it may damage the reputation of your squeaky clean clan. Your two daughters are tired of hearing about parents shenanigans.

A movie could be made of your life, but it will not be a heart-warming Victoria & Abdul story. I think it would be more like Unmarried with Children.
 
Queen Victoria had 9 children, all who reached adulthood
Big family. A lot of male monarchs had more, but they were illegitimate, or with several wives.

Queen Anne had 17 pregnancies but none survived.

So Queen Victoria had several 'spares' and a big palace to house them all. I've kind of wondered if things might be different had Diana had a daughter or more children. Anyway, too late now.

Most of the modern Royals stopped at 2. I reckon Princess Charlotte now being in line to the throne instead of being thrust aside by her brothers might change everything.
 
Huh haven't heard a peep from King Charles after he made that big friendship speech to the USA to riotous applause.

All quiet on the Western Front? No threats of nuclear war in retaliation?

King Charles made another speech according to newspaper news, but didn't go down as successfully as the US one. It was in the UK parliament. In it he mentioned trying to foster relations with the EU, but they'd already made their point clear with Brexit.
 
Ok in paper this morning - a photo of King Charles shaking hands with the Maori Queen at Buckingham Palace. She was at the garden party.
The Treaty of Waitangi is mentioned ---won't get into that history here...

But yea, world leaders meet other world leaders. However the Maori Queen is generally only known to Maori (because Maori speak Maori of course) and while our country is meant to be bilingual, its not truly, as a lot of Maori have lost their language and culture trying to fit into the Pakeha (British) world. Also here's a case of Maori copying royalty by having a Queen.

Before the Treaty, they would have been various chiefs of different tribes, not a single monarch over all tribes.
She's not wearing the traditional feather cloak or grass/flax skirt I notice, she's in high heels and a white skirt/top ensemble. I suppose dressing for the garden party. No hat. Charles is wearing a blue suit and silk scarf/kerchief.

Now the Queen has met the King, I don't suppose Charles is going to travel all the way to New Zealand/Aotearoa, unless we start throwing garden parties, or maybe hangi and inviting world leaders. I wonder who pays for the airfare. We are on the other side of the world from the UK. It's a 24 hour flight non-stop.

Did she bring a gift for the gracious hosts? Charles bought a bell for the Americans.

I'm hoping she did. Maybe a silver fern ponga tree for Charles fernery? A real fern or a silver one, doesn't matter. Could be wrapped in a flag featuring a silver fern (our unofficial sports flag). Maybe some kumara chips?

Family of buzzy bees for the Cambridges? Manuka honey?

I can only think of one with international visibility - tattoos.
I studied rongoa and while that's sort of taking off locally, I think it will be a while before kawakawa balm is available in the Body Shop or whatever L'oreal did to buy out indigenous skincare ingredients.

Oh but almost all of our forest has been destroyed. And we have kauri dieback disease, so there won't be anymore kauri furniture or gum. Or flax ropes since everythings made of nylon.
I can tell you what the Brits did give us though - gorse, and rabbits.

It will be a long while before we see any Maori small businesses. I mean walk along any main street in NZ. You can't see any Maori businesses at all. Almost all the malls have Australian owners. The takeaways aren't full of hangi. Our waters have been fished out. My mum made skirts for Maori dolls but Maori didn't own the company that made nz gifts and souvenirs (also made in China) it was Pakeha. The only place anyones making money from Maori culture is Rotorua, and its mostly in mud packs.
The All Blacks? They all suffer from concussions.

You know what I reckon? Not that anyone listens to me. Seaweed.
Makes a good fertiliser, and is renewable, provided you look after it and harvest sustainably. Plus unlike fresh seafood that loses its taste when frozen, or kiwifruit that gets PSA, it can be dried and exported. And it won't cause harm unlike dried milk powder and wine. Maybe.
 
NZ govt is looking to sign a trade deal with India.
I can't think what products/services India will provide us that they don't already.
What is NZ going to provide India with? Butter? But they'll need refrigerators too if that butter is going to keep there.

We use to be chummy with Japan and got all their second hand cars.
The Japanese take our seafood, esp the crayfish.

China gets our houses, education, and milk powder, possibly wine ( they have to convince wealthy Chinese to buy, even though many get the Asian flush, are lactose intolerant, and need to move to NZ to get access to education and houses). China gives us everything they make, plus Chinese food for the Chinese living here. (and non-chinese eat at Chinese restaurants and takeaways)

What would we trade with the Brits now they cut off the wool, lamb exports and dwindling dairy that they can get from the EU for less food miles? Children's literature? NZ tv shows like Shortland Street? Kapa Haka lessons?

King Edward took all our toheroa (shellfish) and the numbers still haven't recovered. They devastated our forest for all the Kauri tree wood and gum. And we don't need the Brits muskets/guns, cos guns have been banned.
 
Actually, India probably doesn't want our butter or dairy since most are Hindu and we don't treat our cows very good here. I mean they have plenty of grass and all, but obtaining milk means you have to kill all the male calves, eat the veal/beef and to Hindus a cow is sacred.

So, what would India need or want from us I wonder. Bollywood films made here?
 
All the talk of Trump in other threads is boring. Of course Trump doesn't want anything from other countries except Greenland's land and oil. We don't get anything from the US except their atrocious reality tv shows and music, though even Taylor Swift don't want to come here, it's not profitable for her to do a concert here.
 
News (or olds) about royals - some British radio station reported that King Charles had died.

HE HAS NOT! He's very much still alive, and they had to issue an apology.

Reports of his death are greatly exaggerated. But I know fake news does this...they do that all the time on you-tube. I think they get ready for tributes to everyone famous they think is going to die to save time.

If it's not from the BBC, it's not official.
 
Its coming up to Kings Birthday.. Kings Birthday is celebrated in New Zealand with a public holiday and a long weekend.

It used to be Queen's Birthday. Queen would have been 100?!

I don't think we really do anything, cos he probably gets a lot of Birthday cards and well wishes already.

He gets his own song anyway..which used to be sung all the time, not just at sports events, but before movies were shown and everyone had to stand up, at school assemblies, graduations, and other ceremonies.

God Save the King.

So Harry...I know it's unlikely you may ever be King, but when is your birthday?? Do you have a special Harry Day, I hope so. Meghan didn't specify what she did on your birthday on her Netflix show, Love Meghan but I know she made a fruit rainbow for the kids.
