I say divorce them all, because if all of them are OK with polygamy, NONE of them can be OK with Christianity. Therefore, it would result in not being equally yoked! ...And I assure you, eventually that would be the LEAST of this guys problems as it would then snowball into a strain of sinful actions and maybe even reversion.

The equally yoked thing is a weak argument once you're married...if God were okay with us getting divorced simply because we're "unequally yoked" then pretty much anyone could justify a divorce. And Paul wrote that if the unbelieving spouse is willing to stay, then the believer should stay with them as well. Since the stipulation of this thread is that the wives ARE happy with the guy, the answer that theres no way they are okay with him being a Christian doesn't apply.

On an unrelated note, not a lot of people responded to what one of the wives should do if she were the one that became a Christian and the man was still happy with her.

Whether or not she was a Christian beforehand, the woman is married. Unless they're breaking a law of the land they live in, they're legally married and bonded before God.

So I could be wrong, but the obvious answer would be, she would stay with the man she married, aka, her husband, 'til death do they part.

I came up with this random scenario. So say there is a guy (not a Christian) who has five wives. All of the wives know about each other, live together with him, and are happy with their marital situation. Say the guy then finds Jesus and becomes a Christian. What should he do about his wives? Should they divorce? Stay together?

What are your thoughts?

Also, what if, instead of him, one of his wives becomes a Christian...should she leave him, or stay?

A Spousal relationship is formed by "the two making one", and once created cannot be rendered asunder no matter what that family law judge says. Others are right; most are not necessarily restricted to one but having taken one you're both spousal for life, and both responsible therein. So having been spousal with many doesn't change with conversion so they should all stay together.

And yeah, more than one? Oy vey!

God does not recognize the five wives, only the state does.

Actually not even the state does that. Only the 1st wife is recognized. The rest become ''wives'' through a religious ceremony and are not legally recognized as wives. That being the case, I suppose the only right thing to do would be to quit the relationship with the other 4 who are going to have to simply accept the fact that they made a poor choice gettin' together with the guy in the first place and sometimes things don't turn out the way you like. He'll have a heck of a time paying child support on the bazillion kids I'm sure he'd have

Simply put, He should return to his first wife since all the other marriages should be void and invalid anyway. Therefore the first wife is the only true wife.

While it is not forbidden(as in a thou shalt not), just read what happened to some very Godly men who had more than one wife.
(See Solomon) Also the problems David's and Joseph's children from different wives caused them.
It is clear what Jesus said, and the reason God made male and female.
Paul even refers to it - (the union of marriage) as a type of God's relationship with the church.
How a man could devoet himself fully to his wife if he has more than one is beyond me.....(and Paul), (and Jesus), and (God the Father).

This.

Zero I'm not sure where the bible ever forbids polygamy... we just see a mess wherever it is.

I think he should stay married to them all.

Searching for Truth... I see a lot of arguments for sacrificing everything to God, which we should do, but I don't see the logical flow on that he should divorce these five wives. - Is this the loving, Godly thing to do? The old testament is filled with examples of polygamy, it is never condemned.

Meggars, can you back this up with scripture? The same for you ctc medic.

Simply put. Adam and Eve......The two shall become one flesh. Two not three, four, five , six..............

Ephesians 5: 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

2 Samuel 12

- Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. 8 And I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more. 9 Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.’” 13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.” 15 Then Nathan went to his house.

There are many other verses in the bible that talk about men with multiple wives without condemning it - though I don't think it is ever portrayed.

Thanks Jullianna :)

I agree that marriage is meant to be between one man and one woman. This was the way God designed it... but, I don't see it being outright condemned in the bible... and as a result of that, I think in this particular situation the better thing to do would be to remain married to them all.

At the very least the man has an obligation to support all of his wives.

How does this work spiritually? I'm not really sure...

But then let me throw another question.

A man gets married, divorced, gets together with someone else and lives with them for say... 5 years?

Does this change if they weren't legally divorced?

Who is he married to?

There are a bunch of different examples and weird situations that could arise... I think it all highlights the broken world we live in.

I think all you can do is salvage the best from a bad situation.

Might be an issue of conscience for the man?

The scriptures don't specifically tell me that I can't marry an animal either, but they do tell me that sex with them is forbidden. God then gives me the good sense to fill in the blank.

If the scriptures give us a formula of how things are supposed to be, but doesn't specifically say something else is wrong, does that make it okay?

I wonder what man is worth sharing his attention with 4 other women. The premise makes me laugh, what a mess. :D

Not only is this an excellent point... But someone considering marrying more than one person also needs to consider that after this life, God is going to ask them, "Were you a good spouse? Did you serve/care/provide for the needs of your significant other(s)? ALL OF THEM???"
