They do not talk to you all weekend then Monday give some lame excuse about not being able to chat.

The person doesn't post entire pictures of him/herself. This usually means they are ugly and don't want anyone to know that. The whole concealing your identity online thing is hogwash...just because someone knows your screen name and what your face looks like doesn't mean they can stalk you.

I don't put up a pic because I prefer to be anonymous. I have shared my pic online other places before, so I know I am not ugly because I've had lots of compliments.

I just choose not to have my picture up because I have posted some personal deep honest things here. Some of them are things that I would usually confess in a diary. I like the freedom of being verbally expressive on a forum without worrying all these strangers will see what I look like. Or worse, someone from real life like a relative or something could recognize me then see my posts. That would be AWKWARD! :o I like to keep my internet world and my personal world separate.

And also, I have a boyfriend, and am uncomfortable being flirted with by strangers.

If I befriend someone and it gets to the point I am comfortable enough, then I'm happy to let them see me. But they gotta earn my trust. :)

I dont post pics in public period. Honestly I hate picture taken of me. Only 1 pic of me exists. I dont own a camera dont want one ether.

I dont do webcam garbage ether. don't own one don't want one. (you do know they can be turned on remotely right?)

I am known to disappear and come back later. sometimes months later. thats usually cause I just dont want to deal with anyone. Now if you have made it to the semi close point. ill talk occasionally in my away time.

Don't make a set time to talk to me. I never know when exactly I will be around. again if I am not in the mood to deal with you. I wont deal with you.

I support internet anonymity completely. I have a webcam built on to my computer monitor and it remains covered at all times of the day. I don't post pictures of myself because I am not trusting by nature. This username could be my real name or it could be my alias. I could really look like a panda riding a giant winged-dog-thing made of jade or I couldn't. I personally believe people meeting on the internet is the purest form of getting to know a person, even if they're lying about who they are. Lying about themselves actually shows you parts of the person they are. But I'm not interested in putting any stock into the thought of if the person speaking with me is who they say they are or not. I'm not putting extreme emotional investment in the idea so I don't think too much about it. I give limited information on myself and expect the same or less in return. I enjoy the internet for parts of what it was designed for: to scratch my social craving itch when it's too late to do anything else.

In short: life is too short to worry about things like that so long as you keep common sense at the helm.

The most incredible experience I ever had was this past year. Me and a number of others were totally fooled by a woman that was making some really incredible claims. Yet every time anyone would look into it to check the facts, things seemed to check out.
I even talked to two doctors (one female and one male) only to find out later that both people I spoke to were this woman. How you might ask? Simple, she got a hold of a program online that not only allows you to do alter your voice, but also allows you to input the phone number that caller id would say the number was coming from. Thus the calls seemed to be coming from the hospital when I would call them back or do a reverse number check on them.
I am amazed at how deceptive some people can be. Come to find out, this was the third time this woman had used these techniques to fabricate a fake identity. Why? Not for money or any other gain except for attention.
I don't disclose personal or family issues online and so there are things that someone may not know about me or my family (not that there is anything horrible, it is just a matter of privacy). But, I am not going to give false information about myself either. What you see, is who I am.
It is a shame that there are people that are so discontent with who they truly are, that instead of changing it, they lie.

I have had problems with scammers who are trying to get money. On this very site for example. There are many signs but one of them is that they try to get waaaayyyy too personal too fast. They tell you some horrible situation they are in right up front to get your emotions involved and wont answer any direct questions about their walk with Christ. In fact they will almost never answer any questions not directly related to their agenda -- which is to gain sympathy and therefore money. Sometimes they even change people who are writing to you as the ficticious online person, so the writing style and tone changes. And they get mad and indignant when you wont play their game; they throw tantrums, call you names and verbally punish you when you give them solutions to their crisis that involve real life solutions that don't involve you giving them hundreds of dollars. Ohhhh and my favorite which actually happened a couple of weeks ago; They send you a pic of themselves and it is the one you saw for the previous scam artist two years ago on another Christian site! And when you out one, another tries to friend you out of the blue you never heard of ...always a new member without hardly any activity who knows nothing about scripture or their walk with Christ. And always diverts your get to know you questions by steering back to you. Good times.

classic 419 scam thats been going on for years

I have reported a few scammers in the past. A little trick I learned from some of my friends that are programmer. If you think you have run across a scammer, get them to send you an e-mail. You check the full header and get their IP address. Find out where they send the e-mail from. If they say they are from Pennsylvania and the IP shows up as Ghana, you can report it to the FBI.

What scammers do (you can find more about this at sites designed to help fight scamming)...
They prey on the vulnerabilities of others. Generally they will have a sob story (sometimes eventually after months and months of establishing trust) that sounds very legitimate. They will then ask for help. Many times they will use subtle guilt tactics to get someone to help. I.e. "Don't you trust me?"

I have met some really good people from online. Quite a few that I have met in person.

One thing to remember is that trust is two-way thing in a relationship:
You offer the opportunity to give another person the benefit of the doubt.
You also offer proof of your claims.

If the other person is unwilling to do those, I would be very wary. NEVER accept the "Well, you should just trust me" statement. That would be forsaking wisdom.

This dynamic has even been true even in my relationship with God. He has proved to me time and time again that He will never fail me. I have had to remain humble in seeing the error of my own ways and accept the failures that I have caused. I have grown to trusting that God will never fail me but it has taken me years. I now understand that if I have experienced failure, it has been because I failed to understand or to act on what He has said.

With us, God is merciful and understands that we will stumble from time to time. We need to exercise the same kind of mercy and forgiveness to one another. When it comes to those that seek to purposely deceive us though, we need to wise as serpents. While we need to exercise forgiveness, we also need to be vigilant in not letting ourselves be devoured by the enemy.

I cannot control the actions for another. All I can do is let my yes be yes, and my no be no. To be truthful in all that I say. This doesn't mean that I have to tell everyone everything there is to know about me either. I won't cast my pearls before swine (yes, this is applicable to other interpretations as well) but when I do find those that I have discerned that I can trust, I will be willing to prove who I am to them.

Sorry this is a bit lengthy. Trust in others is something I have been seeking the Lord on greatly. I have found that His ways are nothing like the ways that I have been taught by the world.

Hey Markum. you said: "I have reported a few scammers in the past. A little trick I learned from some of my friends that are programmer. When you are viewing an e-mail in yahoo, click actions and then View Full Header.
Scroll all the way to the bottom and copy the IP address (without the brackets) shown next to X-Originating-IP.
Go to: IP Location Finder
Paste the IP address there and click "Query".
Voila!

Here is another tip. VERY IMPORTANT!
If someone is trying to validate who they are and willing to talk to you on the phone, call them. Don't let them call you despite all of excuses. If they call you, you cannot trust the phone number that shows up in your caller ID nor the voice on the other end of the line. There are programs available online that are really cheap that someone can use to make ANY phone number show up in your caller ID and also alter their voice.
Last year, I had a man claiming to be an advocate/legal guardian call me from England supposedly wanting to shed some light on one of his patients that some people online wanted to investigate.
The call actually came from Florida and was by the woman (voice changer software to sound like a man). Turned out in this case that she was not scamming for money but was fabricating stories in a Christian chat to get attention.
She also had called and made the caller ID appear to be coming from a local hospital claiming to be one of the doctors. Once again, voice change software was used to change her voice to sound like a different woman this time.
Needless to say, a lot of people that had been spending time ministering to her and praying for her were very hurt when they found out the truth.
So, if they won't let you call them, I would be VERY suspicious.
Understand that there are a lot of people that are genuinely seeking support, but we need to exercise wisdom and discretion.

Wanted to let you know that I very much appreciate all the tips you've posted... While it almost makes me scared to death to meet anyone from the internet, I'm learning a lot just from reading your input!

I had no idea people will go to such huge lengths to disguise who they are... It's very frightening, and very sad.

I've had some really great experiences with meeting people I've chatted with or written over the years... but I'm grateful you're willing to take the time to teach us all how to be a little bit more in the know.

Oh... by all means I would not want to make anyone fearful or discourage them from meeting people online. I have met some GREAT people from the internet; in person and have become great friends. I was absolutely shocked to find out what degree someone would go through to deceive others. The fact that this facade went on for over a year and the great effort that was taken was shocking to me. What made it more shocking is that it was all for attention... not money like most scams.

In life outside of the internet, we all have processes that we learn (preferably from God) in how to use discretion and wisdom in whom we establish close relationships too.

One thing that I am reminded is that those people are the same people that are here. The people here all have lives, emotions, thoughts, etc... The only difference is the boundaries that exist online. So, it is important to have a process by which to establish trust. That process is going to be very different within the confines of the internet.

We should not become paranoid and mistrusting of everyone (a spirit of fear), but be vigilant, loving, and wise as serpents (a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind).

There are some (like you), that I discern (by their fruits) are governed by the Spirit of God. It is those that are hidden that I tend to be watchful and wary of.

Thank you for your appreciation. :-)

Markum, Thank you for this information but after you know the IP address is false how do you forward it to the FBI?
