At first I didnt really like where I lived of course had no choice in matter as thats where my family is and it never occured to me to be living anywhere else. But then as grew up and people were leaving to go live overseas Im like whats the attraction? My town has got everything I need and Im growing with it, what if everyone left who would be left, people actually leave other countries to come live here!

So Im kinda one of those people who just stay put and say I aint leavin. My roots are here. My friends are here. Im not upping sticks to find a job somewhere else cos I just find local jobs. Who wants to work for someone else in a town where you dont know anyone? And then have to find a new place to live!

I call it an adventure and the good news this time is I don't have to find a job because I am retired and with trying to down size the price of our housing we are in hopes that Tourist won't have to get another job either. I like new and exciting.... I left my roots the first time when I was 8 years old as I was born in Indiana and my Mom died so I went to live with a school teacher as my Dad wasn't sure how to take care of me on his own so I have started over many times in many places and like adventure....

Looking forward to getting back to the mountains I love and growing my own garden again.

all the best with that if its anything like how Dolly Parton describes it in her songs it sounds beautiful.
Having a garden is important, but I would say at any age start one dont wait till your old.
People take their children to Kindergarten. which is basically german for Children's garden, to raise them.

You can have a garden in the city but I guess you cant have mountains in Florida. I think the only mountain there would be Space mountain at Disney World? Otherwise its pretty much flat...

BLM stands for Bureau of Land Management which is a division of the Department of the Interior. The vast majority of the land the Bureau is responsible for is in the western states.

I tried to container garden in Florida I was in competition for my tomatoes with a squirrel and the heat kills so quickly I gave up trying.
 
I live in a small city. The traffic is still tolerable. I feel that I can't survive in a big city. I will get sick of stress from traffic, polution, high crime rates, and high standard of living. Country living is fine but I got bored fast with nothing to do when I went to the country for vacation. But sometimes when city living becomes toxic, moving to a cabin in the woods near a waterfall sounds attractive.
 
Ive read a few books by writers who get all inspired by Walden Pond by Thoreau and decide they want to rough it in the woods all alone but the reality is they can always go back to luxury living in town or elsewhere, not like the real country folk who live there all the time. Or simply cant afford a home.

Reality check is if they all alone all by themselves it actually does get boring. And then if they get sick or anything which actually happens nobody is there to look after them.

one time in the sixties there was this huge back to the land movement and the nz govt actually made land available for wannabe hippies to live in communes. Well they got the WORST land that nobody could make a living on. They called them 'ohus' and most of them collapsed due to infighting.

when country or rural people move to town, often they cant cope its fish out of water. Its more expensive and they have to find jobs as they cant just quickly set up or run a home business if they renting. They cant grow much if the soil is poor or toxic, or they on the back foot in many ways...anyone whos tried to garden on clay?
 
I'm southern big-city boy myself but grew up in Detroit. Big cities is really all that I know. Currently living in Clearwater, Florida which is part of the Tampa / St. Petersburg metropolitan area with a population over 4 million. Tired of the traffic congestion, police sirens and hot sticky weather. Sick of it. Time for a change in venue.

You are right in that Space Mountain at Disney World is the only mountain in Florida. I have been on that attraction many times as I used to live in a suburb of Orlando which is basically one big tourist attraction. Well, the ride is over and the thrill is gone.

Can I ask why do lots of older people move to Florida, is it because its warm and so flat?
But isnt it pretty much a swamp?

I havent heard many good reports of Florida lately many say its too crimeridden. Its got sunshine and beaches and I suppose close to caribbean good for a holiday spot but if you not from there I imagine it would take a bit of adjusting to. The heat and humidity really does affect people.

I lived in Singapore for a while and even people that lived there all their life complained about humidity and that aside from shopping and eating what else was there to do. Well the first few months I was like this is paradise, lots of different food, the clothes all fit me and its so clean and efficent, then I started to get antsy about living in an apartment block and the lack of fresh air.

people said oh you will like it when you meet someone you like then you will want to stay, but ironically all the guys I met wanted to LEAVE singapore. I thought well this isnt going to work. And then, funnily enough when Im back in my hometown the guys I meet hate my town cos they from somewhere else and complain about it. I dont think thats right at least, I dont want to be around someone who just hates their very existence.

I think if you going to stay somewhere you adjust but you just do not diss someones hometown when you go out with them. It might be natural to miss your own home but you made the choice to be there right?

I was much younger when I left for Florida in 1985 because of poor economic conditions in Michigan. The swamp is in the southern part of Florida in the Everglades. I have never been there. Warm in the winter is OK I miss the change of seasons. In Florida the leaves on the trees are either green or they're dead. The endless summer heat and humidity can be brutal. Yes, a lot of old people move to Florida to retire but I moved here for work opportunities. I don't believe that I will ever be able to fully retire. Probably work 'till I'm dead.

is there a lot of work to do in Florida, I mean what are the main industries, aside from Disney World and NASA?

I find that cities have better work opportunities if theres a certain size population and the industries are diverse, i.e theres not just one main gig in town. Although some towns they only have one thing, like for example the southern cities in China are just devoted to making jeans.

It also helps if theres universities well at least the student population keeps the town young. But often what makes a town a success could just be location location location.

Being a state with a lot of older people the medical industry does well here, I worked 25 years in the financial business as an administrative asst. With a lot of old people comes a lot of wealth that needs to be taken care of. Farming as we grow lots of citrus and tourist industry as millions of people come to vacation in Florida every year.

So there is lots of money to be made here..
 
How bout Michigan, much industry there or is it too cold? I think some areas are too cold for peoples comfort zones. But if so you would think the perfect place to live would be right snap bang in the middle of the country, in your case, Minneapolis perhaps?

of course everyone likes to think where they live is the centre of the universe. Lol
