I haven't done this, but I have a friend who attends Singles trips with a large church she is affiliated with. They go on weekend outings, etc. She has never been interested in dating, but she really did enjoy spending time with other singles as friends.
I have the most fun road tripping with friends who don't take themselves too seriously. We eat junk food, listen to classic rock or silly stuff (like the Star Wars sound track--it makes every journey an epic adventure), camp out or stay in discounted hotel rooms, and check out whatever sight seems interesting at that particular time.
I'm not really sure anymore! Lol-- I'm interested in seeing the world, experiencing culture, shopping, adventure seeking--- not really hanging out and reading a book-- I guess it's been a long time since I travelled or did anything for more than a weekend, and I'm pretty apprehensive about travelling on my own; I wondered if anyone's had any positive experiences doing this-----

A vacation is usually identified as a time of great stress and effort above and beyond what is normal, for further details on stress and effort while on vacation refer to your dictionary, the definition of the word 'children'.
If you do not have children, then a vacation can more easily be identified as a time of great stress due to the sudden and dramatic increase in the number of hands taking money out of your wallet!
I've always wanted to go on a trip specifically for singles, such as a cruise... but with a goal of doing something or going somewhere as opposed to it being a non-stop party, which I've never been into.
I've also always wanted to take a friend, because my biggest fear on such a trip would be winding up with a roommate who tries to bring guys back to our room every night. I'd have to sleep in the hall or something.

My suggestion is.. Hawaii. Besides the fact that it's beautiful, there's great shopping in downtown waikiki, snorkeling in hanauma bay, helicopter rides over the kiluea volcano (spurting lava), pristine beaches, horseback riding, beautiful resort hotels, etc..
Maui is even nicer (than waikiki). I've been to both places twice and to me it truly is like paradise. And did I mention the rainbows?! There always seems to be pretty rainbows in the sky there (sometimes more than one at a time!). And the sunsets are indescribable.
Grab a friend and book a tour (though if you're willing to pay extra you can usually get single accommodation), or if you want to do the more adventurous thing you might want to try doing do it yourself travel. Personally I've done quite a few missions / service trips as a single and those can be a great way to meet like minded people and really get into the culture of a new place and meet the people.
The backpacker / budget traveller scene is reasonably "safe" (keep an eye on your stuff, expect people to try to rip off the tourists, but you are highly unlikely to experience any violence) and people doing that are usually super friendly. If you'll be tempted by a party culture it could be a situation that will get you into trouble, but most people aren't out to force you to party or sin, they're just being nice and trying to include you in something that they would like to do. So that can be a way to travel and sightsee on your own but around people who will be like "hey we were thinking of doing this today, do you want to come?" or "We did that yesterday and it wasn't so great, save your money and do something else instead."
There are also plenty of online resources about women traveling alone and safety concerns and what not. There are some places you don't want to be a solitary female traveler, but for the most part I've found being a western woman I don't have many problems (except maybe local guys sometimes seeing me as a source of a green card or being with me as easy access to wealth or a ticket to a better life) and I've been all over the world with various groups during the past 8 years or so.

I want to also add that the people of Hawaii are sooooo nice! Complete strangers will greet you with a smile and an aloha for no reason at all (at least on Maui this is what I experienced) and they are polite and friendly. My heart really longs to go back there someday.
One downside though is that it can get quite hot there especially with the high humidity, but the weird thing is that it would get real hot and muggy for a few hours and then it would suddenly rain cats and dogs for a little while and then it gets sunny again as fast as it started raining and the humidity is pretty much gone. All that can happen more than once a day sometimes. This is why they have so many rainbows.

What's a vacation? I've had ten stressful years and no end in sight that I can see. If I knew what to do I'd take one myself.

"as a single" as in doing it alone?
I haven't gone very far for very long as a single─ yet (planning on something). I took a two hour drive to a little mountain town and spent the day there about a 1.5 years ago. Having someone tag along would have been nice, but there's always opportunity to mingle with people along the journey.

Sassylady, you can come with me!! We can both grow those spots in from pulling out hair out--- make sure you read each post through well; we don't want to miss anything!!
I have also heard how beautiful Hawaii is, and how much fun it is! I would love to experience it someday in the future-------- probably a save up and head there in two years or something like that--- BUT isn't it great to have something positive to look forward to? Thanks for all the tips, everyone! I got a hold of a friend I haven't seen in a while and it looks like we may head south side to NYC for a little down time this summer!
I am sure it is beautiful there-- I worked for three years in the Arctic and saw beautiful Northern Lights; but my community was past the 60th parallell so we didn't get the awesome colours-- I'd love to see all this area-- my sister was a missionary for over 20 years and says that Chec. Republic is one of the most beautiful places she has ever been--
