We live in a culture where the concept of sin has become entangled in judicial arguments over right and wrong and their possible, legal justification. Many consider sin to be violations only of the Ten Commandments and even then there is a tendency to think of 'major sins' such as 'murder' and 'adultery' to really matter and be paramount over those such as lying,, envy, pride, cursing, or idolatry.

The truth is that sin, as defined in the original translations of the Bible, means "to miss the mark" and the mark, in this case, is the standard of perfection established by God and revealed for us in the life of Jesus. The Apostle Paul says in his letter to the Romans: "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" as does John in his first letter. It's really simple to understand. In the Kingdom of God there cannot be a falling short of the righteousness of God – it is impossible. There is no lying, no cheating, no anger, no malice, no pride, no vanity, no wrongdoing or wrong-thinking of any kind – none. There can only be love and goodness and so viewed in that light it is clear that we are all sinners and must constantly try and mend our ways and seek God's forgiveness if we are to eventually enter into His paradise and join with Him.

My most simplified respone...Anything and everything that does NOT Honor God.

Anyone who knows it is a sin and does it anyways, to him it is a sin.

Sin always makes me think of Luke 7:36-50. We all have so much to be grateful for. His forgiveness and the sanctification process are priceless, none more though than Himself!!!!

He is helping us all and we will always need Him and His Blessed Tender Mercies!!!

I look at it this way, We can be obeying the commands of the law and still be in sin. Scripture gives us two things to help us not sin. Seek after things of the spirit. and love God and neighbor (law of love)

Anything we do outside of these two things, whether it is a good deed or not. is done in sin.

[highlighting ^ mine, to emphasize and elaborate the following]

Paul, in his letter to the Romans, distinguishes between:

--sinS - Romans 1 thru 5:11 ("sinS" we commit, that is, the "sinS" of commission and omission)

--Sin - Romans 5:12 thru chpt 8 end (the "Sin" principle)

Grasping this distinction will aid you in "understanding" Paul's letter to the Romans (and by extension, his letter to us / "the Church which is His body" to/for/about whom Paul was tasked [by God] with disclosing and explaining the "doctrine" which pertains [particularly] to us / "the Church which is His body") = )

There can only be love and goodness and so viewed in that light it is clear that we are all sinners and must constantly try and mend our ways and seek God's forgiveness if we are to eventually enter into His paradise and join with Him.
...on another note ...

A Hymn by Edward G Taylor - Not Try, But Trust -

1 Not saved are we by trying,

From self can come no aid;

'Tis on the blood relying,

Once for our ransom paid;

'Tis looking unto Jesus,

The holy One and just;

'Tis His great work that saves us,

It is not Try, but Trust.

Chorus:

It is not Try, but Trust,

It is not Try, but Trust;

'Tis His great work that saves us;

It is not Try, but Trust.

What is sin? Anything that is not of faith (Romans 14:23).

From HELPS Word-studies:

266 hamartía (a feminine noun derived from 1 /A "not" and 3133/méros, "a part, share of") – properly, no-share ("no part of"); loss (forfeiture) because not hitting the target; sin (missing the mark).
266 /hamartía ("sin, forfeiture because missing the mark") is the brand of sin that emphasizes its self-originated (self-empowered) nature – i.e. it is not originated or empowered by God (i.e. not of faith, His inworked persuasion, cf. Ro 14:23).

I half agree with you. i will rephrase what you said. We should not be sinning in these ways. In the kingdom of God there should not be a falling short of the righteousness of God. We will always sin, but i believe that there is a requirement that we need to understand about in getting into the kingdom. Its like the parable about the man that sold all that he had to buy the pearl.

The simplest answer comes from God. I John. "Sin is the transgression of the Law."

True our culture is quite devoid of the concept of sin. I had never heard of that 3-letter word until I was in college listening to an open air debate between a (physically) blind Christian and an atheist. The word 'sin' kept coming up and I eventually walked away not having a clue of what it meant.
I basically agree with your definition of sin, but disagree of how we enter the Kingdom of God ("we must constantly try and mend our ways and seek God's forgiveness if we are to eventually enter into His paradise and join with Him") .
Scripture is rather clear that as believers we shall not come into judgment but have passed from death into life (Jn 5:24). It is not a matter of our constant effort but His grace and mercy that brings us believers, along.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
(Tit 3:5)

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
(Tit 2:11-12)
